Vague/Semi-specific Locations...

Post » Mon Aug 23, 2010 7:22 pm

I'm sure along with like EVERYTHING ELSE, this has been mentioned before, but in Morrowind I enjoyed exploring.

In Oblivion, they say "Here it is, go there". Also, the 'compass' shows you where things are when within range. I HATE that! I LOVED in Morrowind where you had to spend DAYS (real time) sometimes looking for that long lost cave entrance door! It made it more realistic and SO much more worth while and just plain FUN to actually find some the cave that you were looking for.

Agree? No? :)

Ummm, yes and no. On one hand, yeah, I don't like the quest marker on the compass. I shouldn't be able to enter a cave and immediately be pointed in the direction of my objective (a person, a missing artifact, etc) when I have no previous knowledge of that cave. It removes any reason to explore and look around for yourself.

However, I haaaated spending long periods of time looking for a cave in Morrowind. It was frustrating and it was usually due to poor directions from NPCs. The challenge shouldn't be finding the [censored] place I need to go to (unless that IS the point of the quest, such as that one fighters guild quest that wanted the player to just find a cave and was like "good luck" after that.)

ah yes...fond memories of trying to find the Dwemer Cube.

I do prefer the challenge of finding people, places and things by myself.

To OP: Frustrating, but yes, I agree. I remember a Morrowind quest where FINALLY (after hours of real time searching, AND more hours of side tracking from randomly found stuff and damn Cliff Racers) entering a cave to find a “The Ring” like vampire chick that scared me out of my chair. There was nothing in Oblivion (or even Shivering Isles – which was a better than the main quest IMO) that gave me as much satisfaction as that seemingly minor side quest.

... and Cliff Racers)...

Ah yes, nothing like a weak nuisance like a Cliff Racer trying to stab you as you casually jog down the path! XD Not even worth the effort, lol...

Oh man, screw the Dwemer Cube. EVERY TIME I start playing Morrowind again, that quest frustrates me to no end. I always remember that finding it is relatively simple and that you don't have to go to deep into the ruins...and yet...an hour later I've searched everywhere and I still cannot find the damn thing.

The path up to the second level is so easy to miss, it just looks like part of the rock formation, not an actual path at all. Ugh.

-But you know, It is a REAL quest when the object they want you to find really IS hard to find. I prefer that to simple FETCH quests which seem silly that the NPC would pay me a years salary to do something that takes ten minutes the FIRST try.

Yes, I prefer having to think while playing a game. I quote myself:

It's good there are other people who think quests should actually require the player to use his brain to play and solve the quests. A coconut could solve some of OB's quests for goodness' sake. I think every quest should have a part that requires one to put at least two brain cells to work. Not: click on topic, *poof* pop-up, follow magical imaginary arrow, arrive at the spot, new pop-up reminding you what to do, go back by following the arrow. EPIC FACEPLALM Otherwise I can as well prefer to go and watch paint dry. Or dig a hole in the yard and fill it up again. Requires the same effort.

Yes.

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Antabolis_Informant

Bad times.

Yet still, I would prefer no quest markers leading me to it, but instead have the challenge of finding the item be more about exploring the ruins and less about an easy-to-miss narrow rock formation that also serves as a path to the second level of the dungeon.

I don't mind the idea of having quest markers on the actual location of the dungeon though, provided the person giving me the quest knows where the dungeon is.

Well, most of the locations are shown because you talk to people and they say "Oh yeah, there's a dungeon here---I know where it is, let me mark it on the map" That makes sense to me.

I suppose if you want the challenge of locating all dungeons without this help, dont ask any NPCs about dungeons.

Agree. But if you play Morrowind with the graphics extender mod that allows for extreme distance LOD and that also removes the fog, it's much much easier to find dungeon entrances. In some cases they stick out like sore thumbs from miles away. But that's still better than having a magic compass tell you exactly where a cave entrance is yards before you ever come upon it.

I hope they redefine the dungeon experience from what it was in Morrowind and Oblivion. In both games the definition of what was a dungeon and what wasn't was too rigid.

The only problem I had with Morrowind in concern with finding stuff was the Urshilaku Burial Cavrens.. it took me two days in real time to find them lol.

Otherwise I had no problems with the directions given.

But that was leagues better than the Quest arrow in Oblivion.

Agreed, though I kinda liked it taking so long sometimes. Made it worth while.

Am I the only one who had no problem finding any stuff in Morrowind.

I do not remember any such instance that I could not find a place or item in that game, maybe my memory for the direction descriptions were good, or the fact that I liked to look at any directions for a clue helped, or I might have been plain lucky.

I did not miss the path to that Dwemer box in my first time or ever after that.

The Burial Cavrens, I found it after about half an hour trek from the ash-lander camp, including the fact that I had some adventures in the middle as well.

As for Azura's place, I do not remember being frustrated by the directions, but the timing of the event needed a bit of calculation.
