Daikanos, The Road From Valton to Riften, midday to late afternoon
By midday he had left the city with six guards on his tail. They followed the winding road at a not-so-fast pace while looking out for any clues of bandits or a fight. It didn’t take them long to pas an old farm. It looked like it wasn’t abandoned for a long time but it sure needed a good bit of tidying up, both the house and the fields. They left that place quickly behind and continued on the road. Apart from the noise the horses and their armors made everything seemed devoited of life and the only sounds of animals were birds singing in trees. Noone would ever expect a possible bandit raid could have happened not that long ago.
After half an hour they finally saw something standing at the middle of the road. They hurried their horses and galloped further. When they reached it a bunch of scavengers ran of off the road. It was an abandoned cart. Daikanos jumped from his horse and walked around it. at the front of the cart lay the body of what appeared to be man. The face was completely bashed in, mutilated and destroyed. Probably a mace. The fact that scavengers had already been feasting on the man hadn’t helped with his looks.
“I have found the owner of the cart.” He shouted to the guards. “Scout the invironment. Make sure no bandits, marauders, or anything else is in the area to ambush us. And while you’re at it, search for tracks that can tell us in which direction the attackers took of.”
The guards nodded and each went a different direction. When he saw they were busy with his job Daikanos continued his investigation. The cart was empty. They didn’t only took what was of value but even blankets, plates, and other junk was gone. But they let the horse run, while it is probably worth so much more. This is strange.
He then continued to inspect the ground. There wasn’t much to tell since the footprints all ran over one another, but he was sure there couldn’t have been more than fifteen. When he found the direction in which they always left the scene he followed them, bended forwards with his eyes close to the ground not to lose them.
He hadn’t noticed one of the guards coming back so the Nord coughed to get his attention. Daikanos got up and looked at the man. “Yes?”
“I found tracks, sir. They go in that direction.” He pointed the same way Daikanos was already going. “Are we following them?
Daikanos nodded and ran back to his horse. there he pulled out a map and after orientating himself he drew a small circle at the place where the cart was attacked. If I don’t find them immediately I can maybe pin point their general location by connecting the places people get ambushed. He then gave a loud whistle and it didn’t take long until the other guards were back.
None of them had something to report so Daikanos decided to follow the tracks he and the other guard had found. “What’s your name?” he addressed the guard that had found the tracks.
“Halfeth, sir.” The answer came.
“alright, we follow the tracks he found over there.” He said , while pointing in the general direction the tracks were leading. “Take your horses by the reigns and follow us.”
His and Halfed’s horse were taken by the two other guards and then they started following the tracks. Both Halfed and Daikanos were concentrated on following the tracks, which wasn’t always easy. While sometimes they were easy to follow at other moments they would get lost between the vegetation. But everytime they would find them again one way or the other. They continued going North-West until the tracks completely disappeared.
Daikanos cursed loudly in old daedric words making the guards grimace at the sound of these words. “Stay here.” he said to the guards holding the horses. “Halfeth, you and I will try to find them again.”
The Nord nodded and they started their search in concentric circles. But they never found them again. Halfeth had already given up and stood with the other guards, while Daikanos kept on searching, while he became angrier and angrier.
With a last sigh he cursed and gave up. When he walked back to the guards he felt the urge to kill something, it didn’t matter what, aslong as it lived so he could end its life. Immediately his best friends joined his thoughts.
Do it. You know these men stand no chance to you. You could kill them and get away without anyone knowing. They whispered.
He shook his head and grimaced. Go away! He yelled in his mind but they didn’t.
You know how good it feels, deciding over who lives and who dies. Do you remember the blood on your face? Your sword sliding through a man’s body? Do you remember how good it made you feel? The voices were slowly breaking down his resistance to their words. He felt his hand moving to his sword and after several centimeters clasping the handle.
It took every bit of willpower he had to restrain himself from lashing out at the guards. Instead he stepped on his horse and turned back to where they came from. “We go back to the cart, lay the body in it and take him back to Valton to give him a proper Nordic burial.” He ordered his man and then directed his horse back on the road and then towards the cart.
There they loaded the man on the cart and one of the nords harnessed his horse to the cart. When everyone was ready they started their way back to Valton. He thoughts were still brooding and mooding and the voices were a nuisance he tried to keep as background murmur.
Before they actually made their way back to Valton, Daikanos saw a group of four horses coming towards them. When they got closer Daikanos recognized the Imperial as the diplomat of the Empire trying to get Imperial Legion troops into Valton. “By the balls of Malacath! Not that guy.” He cursed.
When they were in speaking distance Daikanos raised his voice. “Why are you rushing out of Valton so fast? I hope you’re not rushing of the hide any tracks of a legion scout party that killed the man, but let the horse escape?” Daikanos asked with a snide and some suspicion. I hate diplomats and if he starts to annoy me for even a second then I know who’ll be the one I can get rid of my anger on.
