You can request a refund for nearly any purchase on Steama€”for any reason. Maybe your PC doesn't meet the hardware requirements; maybe you bought a game by mistake; maybe you played the title for an hour and just didn't like it.

It doesn't matter. Valve will, upon request via https://help.steampowered.com/, issue a refund for any reason, if the request is made within fourteen days of purchase, and the title has been played for less than two hours. There are more details below, but even if you fall outside of the refund rules wea€?ve described, you can ask for a refund anyway and wea€?ll take a look.

You will be issued a full refund of your purchase within a week of approval. You will receive the refund in Steam Wallet funds or through the same payment method you used to make the purchase. If, for any reason, Steam is unable to issue a refund via your initial payment method, your Steam Wallet will be credited the full amount. (Some payment methods available through Steam in your country may not support refunding a purchase back to the original payment method.

Abuse

Refunds are designed to remove the risk from purchasing titles on Steama€”not as a way to get free games. If it appears to us that you are abusing refunds, we may stop offering them to you. We do not consider it abuse to request a refund on a title that was purchased just before a sale and then immediately rebuying that title for the sale price.

Yeah, but you have to through Steam's Customer Support.

Its automated, apparently. I haven't tried it but it checks your account for the game and if it fits the timeline, its automatic.

It's only for 14 days though not 30 days like gog.com. Also like SFGR PHOENIX said. Steam's customer support is horrible and slow.

I wonder if I can get anything for the few games I have purchased (well over 14 days) that do not work...

Try it. Explain why those video games do not work and what bugs they have that never got fixed and report back here.

Can't do it on a physical version if it has been opened, even with in an hour of being purchased for PC games. 14 days is above and beyond that industry standard by a long shot.

Edit - only directed at folks who prefer physical copies to gog. Gog does win on the refund policy. However, this may be Steam recognizing gog as a competitor now, and that can be healthy for consumers.

Real Competition can only help at this point.

I think Electronic Arts (EA's) Origin with their Game Time or whatever refund for video games is also helping in competition for video games being sold digitally on the internet on digital distribution retailer services.

With all of the law suits in a lot of countries that VALVe got, like in Australia and in the European Union (EU) supreme court. I think this finally forced VALVe to change their refund policy on Steam.

This is exactly why Steam cannot be a monopoly and we need more than 1 digital distribution retailer service on the internet selling PC versions of video games. Because competition will happen because of this. If there was no competition for Steam everything would just be halted and not improve.
