Vampires & Alcohol

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 2:32 am

I've tried to answer this question myself by going through various sources but I haven't yet found one which makes specific reference to the eating and drinking habits of vampires save for the obvious blood svcking. If a vampire were to drink a spirit of some sort, would they feel the effects in the same way as a mortal would?

I wouldnt think so, but then again not many people know how a Vampire's body functions. I guess it would fall into a living or Dead debate about their bodies

Muthsera,

One assumes that the alchemical effect listed for each alcoholic beverage (i.e., flin, cyrodiilic brandy, sujamma, etc.) are to be a gameplay approximation of intoxication through imbibing the alcohol. Since a player can still feel these negative effects while infected with vampirism, I would conclude that a vampire can, in fact, experience intoxication.

Additionally, and although Ash Vampirism is separate and apart from traditional Molag Bal-ish poryphic hemophilia, there is http://www.imperial-library.info/tsomw/mw_19.shtml of Dagoth Endus toasting the Nerevarine with fine Dagoth brandy before their battle. There is the question of why one would want to experience those negative effects prior to entering battle with a prophesized hero? It could be that (1) the negative effects do not effect ASH vampires, thereby making the toast a ruse for Dagoth Endus to obtain an unfair advantage or (2) that the Nerevarine defeated Dagoth Endus BECAUSE he was drunk.

However, we are now delving into the realm of pure speculation, which is a practice that is not held in favor by the Council of JHUNAL Primates in their Research & Exploration Guidelines promulgated in 3E 84.

I hope this helps, and may the Light of JHUNAL be upon ye, for I remain...

You forgot option 3 in your post, Word Merchant, and that is:

3) Dagoth Endus has him some class. Now all he needs is a monicle.

On topic, though, I'd imagine that vampires would be affected by alcohol. They're affected by poison and potions, right? And all three affect the body, be it healing/fortifying or hindering it (depending on the liquor, either one). So why not?

Besides, the idea of Janus Hassildor stumbling around, slurring his words with a lampshade on his head is priceless.

I would agree that House Dagoth and its attendant Ash Vampires exhibited a degree of chivalry and respect for one's enemy much higher than one would normally expect, therefore Dagoth Endus' toast being a good faith show of respect is quite possible.

Nontheless, we also cannot take their chivalric nature for granted; they did sent a multitude of minion ash zombies to assassinate the Nerevarine in his sleep, which, I must say, is not a very up 'n up tactic.

Could be any of those, I'd wager.

Yes but they are not effected by paralysis which would imply that something has changed in their body when they became a Vampire, Poison would effect their blood and vampires need their blood dearly it could be assumed if something threatening happened to their blood they would also react negatively to it.

Mechanics-wise, vampires do get drunk when they consume an alcoholic beverage.

Here's a better question: can they get down on the mary jane...if it exists in some form on Tamriel?

When it comes to vampires and Tamriel, I can't help but think that there was a slight opportunity missed for greater variance between the vampire clans. Granted, the main difference in vampire clans in Elder Scrolls lore is what skill they are more adept in. I think that Andrzej Sapkowski developed something slightly more interesting for the world that The Witcher is based in. Different kinds of vampires; some being higher forms than others. The higher forms of vampires, say a Bruxae or Alp, not needing blood for sustenance, instead it acts more like alcohol to them. However, when one thinks about it; instead of there being more "refined" and barbaric forms of the vampire; in TES, vampirism is a disease that renders the afflicted into an undead, blood-hungry killing machine effectively destroying all romantic notions of vampirism.

Still, I like to think that TES vampires can still get intoxicated like all us bloodsacks.

EDIT: An Alp. Not plural and certainly not the mountains stretching across Europe.

According to http://elderscrolls.blogspot.com/2007/03/elder-scrolls-traveler-issue-4.html#theloremaster article, the vampires lower digestive track is rendered useless when he or she changed, instead the absorb food (liquids) dirctly into the blood stream from thir stomach.

In which case, im gunna guess theyed get drunk, and then some.

That's however got no actual lore backing up that part of the article, it's as you'd say "made up".
