Van Buren Finished and packaged with New Vegas

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 6:48 pm

I thought about this and there is probably a one and a million chance it would ever happen but if it was possible, how cool would it be if Beth Soft contracted Obsidian to finish Van Buren and include it as a little bonus with New Vegas. By finish, I mean the original code with the isometric game play not reinventing the wheel and porting it to a 3d engine. It would be so awesome if this could happen. The game was nearly completed already when the layoffs occured at BIS and the Lead Designer of New Vegas was the Lead on Van Buren. It seems like a perfect fit! Please please please let this happen. It'd pay extra money for it and it could be labeled as NON-CANON so as not to interfere with the new direction. This game is a little lost piece of the IP and a full product to boot. Please Beth Soft, at least think about it.

The original source code is probably lost, so they'd have to start from scratch. As for it being non-canon, Fallout 3 is actually entirely consistent with the Van Buren storyline, and even includes a number of references to Van Buren, so if it were ever released in any shape or form, I don't see why it should be non-canon.

This is not likely to happen, Van Buren isn't finished and there would be little point in finishing it as a free bonus with New Vegas.

This is like suggesting that Square Enix picks up Fallout Tactics 2 and finishes it.

Except that some Obsidian devs are former Black Isle devs, that developed the originals and Van Buren.

I can't see how Van Buren would pass as 'bonus' content, it's a full title in its own right.

No its not, It's like asking the same guy that was the lead designer of Van Buren to pick up Van Buren and finish it. :)

Yeah. Van Buren is a full-on title. It would be an insult to release it as a free add-on to Vegas.

Well whatever you wanna call it i'd rather see it and play it and enjoy it and have it labeled as "bonus content" then never get to play it at all. It's better than nothing.

I personally think they should just focus on new ideas rather than ones detailed in Van Buren.

Well, I'd like to have some references to Van Buren ideas in F:NV. E.g. Hoover Dam is pretty damn close to Vegas, so it would make sense for New Vegas to have some characters from the NCR-run Hoover Dam.

You know... The only reason I bought Brain Fargo's new Bard's Tale, was to get retail copies of Bard's Tale 1, 2 & 3. Bonuses can add sales.
I read that VB was over 70% done, so what was left to complete... content, or code? (likely both, I know).
Though it would be amazing for them to complete it... I would be more than happy if they just put its remains in the "goodies" folder as an unsupported zip file (if there were more to it than the 3 area demo).

Van Buren's Engine is 90% finished, but that is just the engine, there is no combat or any dialogue, you can walk around.

Van Buren should be left where it is. There is nothing sadder than someone trying to finnish someone elses art.

Obsidian is comprised of former Black Isle employees. They'll be finishing their own art :P

Or even better, if New Vegas had the storyline of Van Buren! Very unlikely, but it could be possible.

Not possible. New Vegas is a much smaller project than that storyline would require.

Do we have any info as to size Ausir? I haven't been able to gleen what size it will be but going by time until release I can't imagine it being that big.

As I understand it, Van Buren was designed over a much wider area, spanning Utah and Colorado. New Vegas, assumed to take place in Vegas, means that we'd only really be able to visit the Hoover Dam, one of the many locations of interest planned for VB.

Nearly the whole of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona, in the style of Fallout 1 and 2, with travel through world map between locations. As the name suggests, Fallout: New Vegas will focus on one city and its surroundings, like Fallout 3.

Not to mention the fact that if it were a Van Buren remake, it wouldn't be called "New Vegas", because Van Buren didn't even include Vegas (although Hoover Dam is pretty close to it).

I expect New Vegas to include some homage like references to Van Buren, heck it may even pull from some of the VB material.

But I doubt severely that Obsidian wants to either 1) Complete VB in addition to developing Fallout: NV or 2) Make Fallout: New Vegas "Van Buren Redux"

If I were J.E. Sawyer I wouldn't want to do that. If I were Bethesda listening to Obsidian's pitch, I wouldn't approve it. If I were Obsidian knowing I was making a pitch to Bethesda, I wouldn't pitch it.

But that's just me.

There are a lot of things that can be done, Nellis is in Vegas and as pointed out Hoover is pretty much next door.

Also there is Area 51 that is also nearby and lets not forget were the nuclear testings were done, heck since there is no NASA but a USSA its quite feasible that the US Space Program was run by the Air Force in the Nevada Desert and lets also not forget nothing really stops then from doing what gamesas did, separate maps.
