Van Graffs..

Post » Wed Oct 20, 2010 10:09 pm

Hello.

I took the peaceful approach to 'Heartache by the Number' for Cass. As you may or may not be aware, the most recent patch made it impossible to retain any form of a good relationship with the Van Graffs; and automatically turn hostile.

Just took out everyone, so I'm assuming I'll be ok to save and won't mess up any main/side quests up? It's their own fault. I'm just more happy about the prospect of looting this entire place. Any help will be appreciated.

I believe you can continue the game after this.

Thankyou. Besides, even if I did need to talk to them further down the storyline I would have found it impossible. I only ask because I'm exploring and doing side-quests, not focusing on the main questline as of yet.

ah - that's why the two guys on the street (caller? and the Guard) started shooting at me.
I thought i messed something up - i used to go Cass' quest and then go work for them to get the bomber do the dirty work - hmmm well i guess i'll just take Cass with me to wipe the place clean. Wonder if she'll still be complaining.

Anything changed with the Crimson Caravan?

There are two quests tied to the Van Graffs that are eliminated by doing the quest for Cassidy. And, you lose the only Energy Weapons dealer in the game, unless you are working the BOS quest line at some point. While you can get some energy weapons from other places, the Van Graffs are a one stop shop.

However, other than that, the Van Graffs are not an intergral part of the game and the shop's inventory is all yours for the looting. (assuming you don't mind the Karma Loss from grabbing most of the items. There is a plasma pistol on her counter that is not owned.

What I would like to see is someone else come along to run the shop if you do Cassidy's Quest. Strangely enough, the Crimson Boss seems unperterbed by this whole chain of events.

That is the reason they attack. The idea is they know you turned in evidence against them. Crimson Caravan are fine with me. Totally oblivious to the fact I've wiped out the family, lol.

I only used Energy weapons for the 10k DMG achievement. Still I'd like a nice collection of them, and will not mind the Karma hit for taking them. 100 Guns, so I tend to stick to that.

Nice idea with someone else owning the store. I'm glad this will not interrupt my main questline. Thankyou CC. :)

EDIT - Turns out you don't even receive any loss of Karma when looting the store. It says 'Steal x' but I'm not notified of any Karma loss.

I need to test the Karma hit myself. Last night I got to play with the Gaurds from the store as they came pouring out into the street and it took a couple of reloads and waiting until I could get a clear intersection to take care of things. Did not want to hurt any innocents with my Rockets. I went into the store and took care of the Van Graffs, but when I saw everything in red I just reloaded. I will go back when I get home and see what happens.

It will remain 'red', however there is never any Karma loss for pinching it. I used to loot the place blind all the time, until I realized that almost nobody sells high-tier Energy Weapons and robbing the store can pooch up Gloria's inventory.

If you want to loot it while they are still in it, just drag the stuff to the bathroom where they won't see you. Do keep an eye out for Jean-Baptiste, though, he's known to wander back there every so often.

Speaking of Jean-Baptiste, he had a terrible accident and I'd like to help. You see, he took a Gauss Rifle shot between the eyes, and he's lying on the floor, and I wanted to help...myself to his plasma caster. The Pip-Boy shows "E - Search Jean-Baptiste" but pressing "E" yields a click and nothing else.

I got here by first getting the evidence from Lafferty's safe, then starting Birds of a Feather until I could waltz into Silver Rush with my weapons, then bringing Cass to meet J-B. I objected to his desire to kill her, and a lovely fire-laser-plasma-gauss fight ensued. Note that I never told Cass about the evidence from Lafferty (and she objected to this for obvious reasons). Meanwhile I have "Heartache By the Number" at the point "Find Alice Lafferty at the CCC and 'settle accounts.'" Well, dear Alice isn't the slightest bit perturbed at our presence, and there are no new dialog options with her or with Cass, so I have two questions:

1. Must I simply blow Ms. Lafferty away at this point? This seems to be my only Heartache option.
2. Is there a way that I can search J-B?

1. If you have taken out the Van Graffs you'll also need to kill Alice, as you have committed yourself to the violent solution for Heartache by the Number.
2. It is supposed to be possible to search Jean-Baptiste's corpse, but due to a bug he cannot be looted if killed. Even if you could loot him, his weapon is unplayable so you wouldn't get it anyway.
