"VATS is a built in cheat"

Post » Tue Jan 19, 2016 1:29 pm

If shooting relies on PLAYER skill, then the game is no longer a RPG (which relies on CHARACTER skill).

I see VATS as a way to have the character determine combat success rather than the player.

Not true. You're mixing up comments. I was the one who used my playthrough as an example for PA being a "cheat" to myself. I was trying to convince him/her that her opinion on VATS was just that, an opinion ;) But then they proceeded to imply that VATS was in fact, a cheat/crutch for those who can't aim.

Regardless, I'm not here to name shame. I just wanted the communities opinions on this matter, nothing more.

I'm not sure I'd call it a cheat. It has it's ups and downs. It slows time and let's you target body parts, which helps for crippling, extra damage on heads, etc, but can also miss due to range, cover, etc.

When you don't use VATS, you can actually hit targets behind cover or at greater ranges much more accurately.

So I'd say it balances out and I find myself switching between using it and not fairly regularly, depending on the situation.

Hey its fair when enemies get to use VATs against the player....

And the player cant just instantly repair broken limbs.

Sure then it will be fair :D

???

No, VATS is essential to role playing as it makes outcomes based on character abilities, the fundamental requirement of all role playing. If anyone is relying on their own twitch skills, they are not role playing at all and may as well not play an RPG.

Have you seen how accurate enemies are with explosive weapons? I'd say they use VATS quite regularly. XD

VATS is cool and it makes Fallout the game it is.

The FPS aiming in the game is so much better in Fallout 4 that when I use VATS I miss shots I would never miss.

Sometimes I am lazy and just want to use VATS .

The slow motion action is cool as well sometimes..:-)

Did he refer to the 90% damage reduction you get when using vats? Going into VATS mode before you take a nasty hit can allow you to face tank an attack you have no right to survive.

No I don't think V.A.T.S. is a cheat and the reason enemies don't use it is because they don't have PipBoys, which makes sense. I will echo what others have said, "How can it be cheating in a single player game?"

I have found that aiming and hitting my target is much easier in Fallout 4. I can and do play the game some times without V.A,T.S and it is very doable. That being said I hope they never do away with it because it is distinctly Fallout.

But I can use VATS without a pip-boy in the vault, so, is that not VATS?

I gotta make a mod that gives enemies "pipboy's", removes stimpack limb repair, and allows mobs to get 90% damage reduction on demand.

People will love it!

Lets not forget that people use it for,

Finding traps,

Possibly seeing exactly where the quest item is located in a room.

Not having to switch to a Close Combat weapon........I mean this really is what people are using VATS for to avoid carrying around a knife, bayonetted riffle, or perhaps any variant of a weapon meant for close quarters fighting and they justify this by claiming that the CC mechanics are pathetic.

Well the reason why they have a hard time with CC is that they are trying to use the wrong weapon.

Not on demand, though. They need the action points to use it. >.> Or they can't actually fire their weapons and just become bullet sponges.

As for the 90% damage reduction, is it true that it applies even if your just looking? If so, that's stupid. It should only apply when you're in the middle of attacking and can't move to dodge, not used as a shield.

VATS isn't a built it cheat. It is a deliberate troll by BGS to get a certain segment of the players to say idiotic things like that in public.

Pitiful. I love the Stunning Super Sledge and use it but really he took damage. WTF. I can do that bit, and I never scratch my armor that badly. Poor fool.

The whole game is a "cheat", so what?

You can carry hundreds of lbs of stuff, have invincible companions, super human abilities, stimpacs to instantly heal you, chems to slow time, fantasy creatures. The whole game is a gigantic heap of make-believe.

As for my opinion on VATS, VATS itself is fine, it's one of the staples of the fallout games, you simply can't not have it. As for the 90% damage reduction... well it isn't technically cheating because the games rules allow it, but deliberately going into VATS mode so you can tank dangerous attacks like deathclaw or mutant suicider, comes off as a bit cheap to me.

Some could see VATS that way...some could also say that VATS is there to separate the insightful and inspired RPG'ers from the hand-held, monkey see-monkey do, linear minded FPS players.

enemies used to use targeted shots (VATS) in FO1&2, one of the things that happened when ramping up difficulty was the amount of targeted shots enemies would use

god that was brutal on the oil rig in FO2 with a bunch of enclave soldiers making targeted shots with gauss rifles and yk42 pulse rifles! i used to breath a sigh of relief when i see them armed with a vindicator miniguns haha!

easier to have enemies use VATS in a turn based game though
