VATS-Style Assassinations

Post » Thu Oct 13, 2011 8:23 pm

Hey everyone. After watching the Skyrim gameplay footage over and over again, I keep getting hung up on the wolf assassination 3 minutes into the demo. The camera does a side shot of the player slow-mo slaying the beast. It comes off as very obviously Fallout-ish to me. I'm just curious of a thing or two:
1. Do you guys like this implementation?
2. Does anyone know if we have any control over whether or not we can turn this type of feature off/choose not to "assassinate" our enemies?
3. Any additional comments or info you have regarding this topic.
I definitely lean toward not liking it, it's nowhere near a deal breaker for me, not even close, but I feel like popping myself out of first-person at any given time takes away from my immersion. Anyone else have thoughts? Thanks a ton!

I'm okay with cinematic gameplay scenarios ... Mass Effect series and Elder Scrolls series are really the only two game series I've ever liked.

You can't turn it off.

They're finishers

1 Yes, I like it. Adds a certain 'dynamic' to my character
2 You will not be able to turn it off
3 Different weapons have their own finishing move
3 Different types of beasts have different types of finishing moves
3 Finishers happen in both 1st and forced 3rd person POV
3 Finishers don't happen EVERYTIME you kill something
3 There is a perk that gives you the ability to decapitate your enemy... I'm assuming it's a finisher.

No, we cannot turn the forced 3rd person kill animations off.

However, they are so far and few between, that based from people who played Skyrim at the EG expo said that they never had the same finisher twice in the amount of time they played.

And others who doubted this and then actually played hands on stated that they're actually quite cool. So honestly, it's all subjective, I think they look great.

One of the best new features of the series.

1, 50/50
2, No, there isn't an option to turn off the finishers :sadvaultboy:
3. I just hope it's not overdone, it would be annoying but it can be a nice addition if done right.

It's better than just hitting them until they fall over.

Yea I'll definitely be on the boat agreeing that there is no way for me to make any call until I've done them for myself, in which case I'll more than likely end up approving in the moment of the kill and thinking "Dang, that was awesome". The Decapitate perk...sounds quite violent, which I've never really wanted my Elder Scrolls experience to lean too heavily towards. I know I can choose to not accept it, but all the same, we'll have to see how that one is as well. It's kind of cool that it's a perk, so if you want that out of your game you can have it, or not take it and keep it clean.

After I posted this I watched a few more times, and I came to the same conclusion. I think it would feel a lot more natural and intense if they just kept it sped up. I don't really want bullet-time.

Better than the "slash" *dead* thing that happened in oblivion. Especially in regards to stealth kills.

To be honest I dont mind third person cinematic, I think they are fitting in RPGs. Reminds you that your character is a living entity instead of a floating camera, sort of adds a third person narrative element to the game.

Are you a floating camera? I'm not a fan of the forced 3rd person or the slow motion. Especially the slow-mo. To me it looks like it's an attempt to draw in younger people, and make it look hollywood and hip. The finishers I love, though.

When you say V.A.T.S, I am thinking the entire process, but I would have to agree with the majority, and also, hope they don't get over used. If you do notice in the video there are other deaths, but not done in slo-mo. I would think they are random.

Exactly, like I said, it feels like bullet-time. I don't want 300, I don't want cinematic appeal. ES has never been a cinematic game, that actually one of the main reasons I LOVE it. Final Fantasy and the like force me to experience something. Elder Scrolls never jumps you out of character, never makes the experience anything outside of what you can control with the gamepad or keyboard.

Oh, I don't think so. It could be like Bloody Mess in Fallout where it adds damage, or give a random chance of instantly killing an enemy like with Deadly Reflex.

What a wonderful perk.

Read my sig.

Sig is wise, but does not apply.

Would decapitation have any impact on the actual game? Only if it affects damage as well.

Would the game play any differently if you made the perk a finishing move from the beginning of the game? Or if you used the console to remove the perk once you had it? Probably not. It wouldn't make me feel as if my character was improving at the skill.

As it is, the full perk gives you a chance to decapitate, 25% extra damage with standing power attacks. So it is indeed wonderful, and not as useless as it appeared from that description..

Yea it's pretty much giving people the option without forcing it on them. I'm all for that. Many people want decap and many people don't. This is really the best way.

It seems only the ones that zoom out are slow motion. There were a few first person finishers in one of the demos that were realtime.
