Vault Education System

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:47 am

The education system in the wasteland is, essentially, nonexistent-for pretty obvious reasons. Since most will be brooding more on how they'll be surviving into the next day in what's basically a radioactive hell hole(at least in Fallout 3) than what happened in 1776, or why, or who was involved, etc. etc. More so, many books and documents are no longer usable-and the little that is is documented by only a few groups that I'm aware of.

However, in Fallout 3 they make a brief reference to the education system of the vault-at least once or twice. If only once, it can occur in dialog with Nathan. Well, that and the fact they DO show a classroom while you are in Vault 101.

Still, they don't really suggest what vault residents would or would not learn, or how commonly a vault would even bother with an education system. Especially in some cases where you'd think most would expect the residents to die anyways.

Does anyone know any other facts/details, or have any theories?

Depends on the Vault. Only 17 vaults were made as advertised, no experiments and should have opened within a few years of the Great War when Radiation dies down. We don't know all the experiments but we do know some like Vault 22 was for scientific study and chances are did not have any kids. Vault 69, 1 man 999 women, no kids there. Other Vaults people could have been educated in very different subjects then pre-war American as part of the experiments.

My guess is the "Default" education system in the vault would be based on the US's cirriculum at the time covering the same subjects as you'd expect in a regular school, but probably adapted for the small class sizes.

However, as Styles said, there would be variances by each vault. Given Vault 15's diverse population, I imagine there could be more cultural studies. A Mathematics class in Vault 21 would likely be probability-heavy (and given its role in the society, may also overflow into other subjects as well.

The question then comes to tertiary education... University/College courses as we know them wouldn't be feasable given the small population size, so traditional "Collegue/Universitty" careers would have to be taught "Vocationally" (with an Apprenticeship/on the job) with textbooks and films as backup.

One word, Holotapes.

Anything else people needed, they could simply consult the How-To Books/Library of Congress/Encyclopedias in the GECK holodisk library for more knowledge. The pen flashlight was just a bonus.

Great. Why don't you just grab a book and head down the hospital, I'm sure they could use a new surgeon...

It takes more than just a "how to" book to undertake the roles in society a College/University education is required for - otherwise everyone would do them and the pay would be about the same as just any other job. Heck, Fallout has "Auto-Docs" but still have skilled medical staff operating them.

Well what jobs do you need actual field experience that are not available in a Vault?

You mentioned Doctors, you also dont have medical students being released in the wild so they learn from experience, they have a internship that can be easy be done the same way on the Vault as Vault Dwellers will require medical assistance.

I said all the information they needed was available, field experience is not a absolute necessity and field experience is available as the Vault can provide it as its a underground town.

Unless you are talking about economists and lawyers but who the hell would want those to survive in the first place?
