Was playing earlier today and my game seemed to freeze. Now I can't load my vault anymore. I'm able to load a different vault file or create a new vault, but attempting to load my main vault just sits at the "please stand by" screen indefinitely. That vault was set up as a cloud save, so I uninstalled and reinstalled the app but I still can't load that vault.

I had a similar issue this morning. It got stuck on a grey overlay 'Loading...' Screen (comes before the 'Please stand by' screen). So a bit different than your issue. Unchecking & re checking the cloud check box, then loading that vault got past the loading screen but it resulted in a new vault with same #.


I used the backup save. Close the app & remove the background task. Open a file manager app, navigate to Android/data/com.Bethesda.falloutshelter/files/ and rename the .sav file to whatever, e.g. .sav.2 (just so you can move it back later if this doesn't work). Rename the .sav.bkp to .sav. Load the app & vault. Worked for me! No lost progress. Hope it works for ya.

Bunner, that probably would have worked if I didn't try the uninstall/reinstall and lose the backup. Thanks for the tip at least.

Sorry the backup was removed. I'd noticed many apps leave some folders/files around when uninstalled. Maybe this app would leave the save files? Bummer it's not there, as you say. If they were there and you started new game on same slot, it'd be gone for sure.

I tried contacting Bethesda support on this very issue and got a canned 'is your device compatible' email. Yes, it's been compatible long enough for me to level my 200 dwellers to 50, and max out SPECIAL on all but a dozen, and buy loads of lunchboxes and Mr. Handy's. Alas, I'm going to miss out on the elf costume and it really feels like Bethesda cares not a bit that their latest update broke Android save games :/

Exactly same happened to me; one vault file wont open. Mine was similarly progressed, 180 dwellers. Saved files linked to cloud so tried re-installing, even wiping the phone, but no luck, this vault still fails to load everytime

Sounds like there is an infrequent issue writing the save file. The devs are probably using protobuf. Hope they do things like writing to a temp file, then swapping the temp file over the .sav only after the temp file finished writing & validates.


Could also be a logical serialization/deserialization issue they'd have to debug w/ a corrupt save. I've run into that many times before due to issues w/ the protobuf library. If you're desperate you could find contact info for & beg one of the folks listed on the QA team in the credits.

I can get to the screen where you can see the power and food. But won't load.

It's doing this to me as well and even when I pull up my backup files it still doesn't work. I am getting really frustrated with it because a couple of months ago my main vault disappeared and now this crap.

I started having this issue today. I had 80 at the time and 3 more who were just born a while ago. All of my dwellers for the most part, have weapons. I just sent one of them out on a mission just to find more weapons and clothes for my vault. The moment she left to go out, the game suddenly froze. I have uninstalled twice, reloading my Cloud and even restarting my device twice. Still gets the same results. I am stuck on the loading screen with the 'power' symbol where one of the energy rooms are, in a half-tapped icon on the top. I don't know why this is happening, but I don't want to be waiting at least three days or so, just to find out my dweller Piper is dead. I sent her off with at least 15 each of stimpacks and radpacks, so hopefully she'll be okay with that 20-25 hit weapon she got on her at least for a while...

Same to me. Send a Dweller to Outlands and Raiders incoming, it seems the Game was frozen and i waited about 7-10 minutes. After reset the Game frezes in Vault Loading Screen. I ceate a new Vault and everything works fine.

I still have the stucked Save Game File and i would be able to send it one of the Devs for debugging? If someone cares and response to our Problem!

I don't know exactly what's going on, but knowing that someone has the same issue really makes me happy to know that I'm not alone in this. Something tells me that it's in game that needs to be fixed by developers. I talked and e-mailed and they referred me to the forums. Apparently that's common. Maybe it was something in the update if it's something not just one or two people are having 'coincidentally'.

Well, the only thing we can do for now is to manage a new Vault to the same issue. Until someone from the devs gets an idea, what goes wrong. Press the thumbs for us.

Exactly. I don't mind if my dweller dies in the Wasteland, Piper can be restored with my 20,000 caps. But like I said, if this is something a lot of players are ending up with, in correlated endings, then it's not the player, but rather the game. It's on their end as a bug, if I am assuming correct. Hopefully sometime in few days they will update the game and revert back to 'classic' mode compared to Winter. During this time I'm just going to break from the game. Luckily a lot of Mr. Handy's will watch over the vault automatically lol!

The exact same response to mine I have a fault it has 101 soon to be 102 cuz there's somebody waiting at the entrance of the vault to get in but I can't seem to even get them in I have two explorers out and one returning and the other one out going I can't even get to him to recall the other one let alone collect the first. Also I've noticed that much the same as the previous reply it gets loaded up and just before I can click on anything it dumps it. I do have two other faults that appeared to be just fine they work no problems... So far. I'm also running version 1.3 on Android is this just a glitch in the system for 1.3 and hopefully they'll fix it by the next version or is this just something that happens once you get past a certain point?

To be honest, I really don't know. I've seen people who had a lot of people in their vaults before the update and if seemed to work fine for them. I'm hoping that it's just something with the update. It seems like a lot of people are having this issue right after it happened.

out of curiousity... your vaults that this is happening to. is it one vault consistantly? I have managed to restore or get my vault to work again using the back-up save. but I have noticed it is "so far" only vault2.sav that does this. has anyone else noticed it it be a specific save slot? just for reference I have had to pull the back up for vault 2, five times now but both vault 1 and 3 are fine....

My vault gets right before the point of loading. I can see the loading screen and throug it the icon of "vater" picked up by Mr. Handy... But than it freezes.

It has been this way for two of three weeks. I don't want to reinstall the game because I don't know if it was cloud saved.

btw: The device is not an issue. 3GB ram, lots of memory to spare and good procesor

I was playing like normaly this sunday...then my screen froze...i waited a bunch and i was still frozen, so i restarted the app, but the vault no longer loads, i can play on a diferent vault, go in vault list and all, but when i try to load that vault it just freezes the game. Any solutions?

I bet most, if not all, of the people who posted on this topic have an area of there vault that is only connected to the rest of the vault by an elevator. If you are like me, that area became infested with mole rats. Since the mole rats can't spawn into non-contiguous areas of the vault, and will not disperse without killing them, they bunch up and then the game crashes. I am waiting on the next update to see if this is corrected. I hope it is, and that I can then recover my vault. Like most of you I have spent a lot of time maxing out the stats of my dwellers, and also have spent some $$$$ on Mr. Handies and lunch boxes. I could start a new vault but then all that time and money invested would just go to waste. If you look at the reviews on the play store there are literally hundreds of us with this problem. I sincerely hope it it resolved sooner than later.

So many people with the same problem...hopefully they release a patch to fix it...but it doesn't seem likely, considering the silence thus far.

Seeing as there's no solution or attempt at one coming from Beth, I shall offer my own;


It is possible to repair the saved file. If you Google "Fallout Shelter .sav decryptor" you'll find a decryption protocol to turn the .sav into a JSON file. In this format you can edit every element of the vault. As suggested above, the fault is caused by the vault being in a bugged state of alert, so you have to wade through the file and change every room status to not in alert.


You can also give yourself as many lunchboxes etc as you desire, which imo is fair compensation for having to do this yourself, and this complete lack of support from Beth,who are happy to take your money for a mobile appp,but can't be [censored] to provide any support to those who have lost their investment of time and money due to their poor coding.


It took me many attempts to fix my vault successfully, I'd recommend simply starting a new one, and editting the .sav to have enough lunchboxes to bring you up to where you were before it crashed and your .sav got bugged. Don't go crazy though or it just won't be fun if you got 1000 lunchboxes and all characters with max stats etc.
