Vault Opening Sound

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 4:16 am

When first escaping the vault, with the V101PD on your tracks and your heart pumping, that ear shatteringly monumental door opening is just indescribably memorable. It was that sort of immersion (among other things) when I first got this game that made me simply love it. :fallout:

Right. It is a huge metal disc that probably hasn't been moved in decades being pushed aside.

Ehh, that what I ment in my comment.

Well said! *claps*

I found that to be the most exciting moment in the game. You know the game was done right when it can get your adrenaline going. <3

It's just for 5 or so seconds. Not really worth it to turn down the volume.

If you aren't ready to do something about it, don't complain about it. :P

I loved entering other Vaults. Door sound doesn't bother me. S'cool walking into Vaults, they all look like 101 so it's kinda like being somewhere familiar, home, whilst still being twisted, dirty, dark, and strange. S'cool. :coolvaultboy:

Love/hate for me I dislike the sounds as it somethimes hrts my ears, but it adds to the atmosphere, it gives you an idea of what it was designed to withstand and it sounds like it has been unopened in years adding to the feeling of isolation.

I love it. There's nothing like the feeling of cracking open a new Vault to explore.

Yeah, I cringe too. But, 200 hundred year old metal against 200 year old metal with more friction than a brick against a piece of concrete won't sound like Mozart.

Who else hates that loud screaching noise of a vault opening it's huge door?!? It's like the high pitched crying of a dying baby!!

I think the sound it makes is appropriate for what it tries to depict. Loud, yes... But I'd recon a dying baby sounds a bit less.... boomy. :P

Yes. The teeth-grindy feeling, just not cool. Got so annoying after the third death on my very-hard runthrough.

I actually quite like it...
I mean, it totally adds to the tension of going into a Vault you haven't been into before....and when you
Spoiler
return to Vault 101
the way it opens really slowly with the screeching of the door until it suddenly occurs.....the s*** hit the fan!

I love that sound! :D Always turn my volume up when I'm opening the vault door (ofc not with headphones on) I think it really adds to the atmosphere and I even say it's one of the most realistic sounds in a computer game I've heard! It really makes me feel like I'm there.

Agreed. I have to admit though that, especially the first couple of times I heard it, it hurt my ears. :)

Well, these doors weren't meant to open and close on a regular basis. To me the sound is pretty realistic for a multiton steel 'plug' being scraqed out of the surrounding multiton steel wall. In my opinion I found this to be very realistic as far as sound effects go.

Guess the Vault Dweller just wasn't smart enough to use a few cans of WD40 before pulling the lever ;)

Every time I have to replay the game (yes I replay the game), I mute the TV when the vault opens.
