Vault 43?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 3:19 pm

I know since it was mentioned in the Penny Arcade comic, it's canon, but why would you lock 20 men, 10 women, and a panther into this Vault?
A few questions:
1. Why would you put men and women in the Vault with a 2:1 ratio?
2. Why bother with the Panther if someone could just strangle it or shoot it?

Well, the 20/10 is something of an underpopulation experiment - vaults are for thousand(s), and there's only 30 in this one.
But the panther... What's up with that?!

Perhaps something to do with our survival instinct.
Clearly it's a male-dominant vault, maybe they would test the protective sences of the men.

The panther is a hazard-facter in any case, which should put the population under strain.
Indeed, 30 humans can easly overun a panther(unless it was drugged with VATS or so).

I personally think it's a rather interesting experiment.

Hmmm, good point. But why just one panther? Unless we're looking at a horrormovie-like scenario - you know, large empty basemant /vault/, a handful of people, and a big fast hungry monster stalking them one at a time...

Seems to me that there's some possibility that the scenario might backfire though - what if they decide to pet the panther...

Yeah, thought about that as well.
Would they be truly that brute and hutn the creature down?
If they could tame it to their own use it would be a gain-gain outcome.

First off, 43, not 34.
Second off, yes, it does, but it comes from the official Fallout website as well, so meh.

I hereby move that Vault 43 become "non-Canon" and just be considered a penny arcade joke.

perhaps it is to test whether genders would side with each other against the panther or not

I think 77 should be considered just a joke as well...

69 I'm comfortable with as I can find reasons for that to be a reasonable experiment.

It being a joke doesn't mean it's not canon - after all, the Vault 77 suit does appear in FO3.

Seconded.

Goofy, goofy stuff. And it's not even a funny joke!

Might as well be "10 women, 20 men, and a jug of mustard."

The cast of "Revenge of the Nerds" could kill a panther. It's just a cat, for christ's sake. :shakehead:

Just because some goober at Penny Arcade took 5 seconds to come with "Vault Blah: X, Y, and SOMETHING ZANY!" doesn't mean we should be having serious conversations about it.

Truly now, thinking about it that way discard pretty much the whole of the Fallout lore forum, doesn't it?

Well, We've discarded Skynet's name, and the GNN news holodisk from the SMD as "jokes", so discarding things that are a bit outregous isnt unprecedented, and considering that other than a single jumpsuit (which just confirms one thing - there is a vault 77, which we already could assume as the good folks at Vault Tec can count) and a note which could be describing the pupeteer, but isnt explicit (and discarding Joke items isnt unprecedented either) - I dont think theres a big issue in dismissing it.

Its not like we're suddenly reconing such that the fallout Animated Series doesnt count as canon anymore....

Good luck, the Penny Arcade strip was comissioned by Bethesda, and is as such, actually canon.

So get over it.

The holodisk was discarded because it contradicted the established timeline.

Uh, was it really necessary to bump a six week old thread to state that?

Anyway, to paraphrase Ausir, just because this is a joke doesn't mean it isn't canon, particularly since many of the other vault experiments seem to be jokes.

Vault 77 does have a logical flaw since the character seems to be contemporary to the Fallout games and yet he entered the vault 200 years ago. However before trying to wrap out heads around this fact it may be worth asking whether it will ever matter what the explanation is. I mean, unless Bethesda runs out of vault numbers why does it matter that one vault had thirty people and a panther while another had one guy and some puppets?

Fallout:BOS was commisioned by Interplay.

And even THEY didnt consider it canon when they owned it.

Star Trek: The Animated Series had Gene Roddenbry as EP. Doesnt mean he thought it was canon either.

I really dont get why this is such a big deal anyway.

It doesnt contradict any of the established canon, so who cares?
