Think Flash animations. They're Vectors while pictures are Bitmap files.

Oh. I like it but I also don't see it happening. But isn't really needed either.

Vectors have serious performance issues with complex models and worlds, for little real benefit.

edit: Vector graphics are basically where you store positions, directions, curvatures, and so on to create a mathematical model of the shape, which can then be processed in a lot more ways than a static bitmap based approach. As you can no doubt imagine, what this saves in disk space and gains in scalability it pays for (heavily) in processing time.

Oh! I see! You were talking about Vector not Vector!

While I would like such a thing it would be incredibly hard to render in an open world 3D game with thousands of textures.

I certainly hope we won't get Vector graphics. In games it means it will look like a wireframe as seen in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elite_(video_game) :brokencomputer:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vector_graphics.

I was just looking at that very page

I can't say that would be a realistic expectation any time soon. It sounds like it might be something really good, but at this time it doesn't realistic...given the limitations of some of the hardware out there for gaming...some of which is over 5 years old now and in dire need of a new generation.

Bitmap textures take larger amounts of memory, but they are faster to load. Vectors are simply points on a graph, and a game engine, a console and my computer doesn't have time to calculate those things smoothly.

Most peoples computers and screens will never have enough power to show off the real resolution of a detailed vector.

Speaking of detailed vector art, http://www.blahblahblahg.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2006/08/ab_girl_drawing.jpg

Do you know how long these kind of things take? I've done a vector portrait for a client, and it took me roughly 20 hours...and I do this for a living...imagine how it would inflict the development of a game.

'xactly. It's not really realistic. I bet in maybe 10-20 years it will be standard in all games, but not right now, and not for Skyrim.

Please forgive my ignorance (seriously), but what sets detailed vector art apart from textured meshes? That image you linked to looks to me like a highly detailed mesh with a very high resolution image applied. Exceedingly well done, with great flair and artistry, but the same in principle as the much lower poly-count meshes and lower resolution textures used in games like Fallout or Oblivion.

I'm afraid that image doesn't make it clear what the difference is.

Without getting into the details, its called http://www.readactor.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Gradient_mesh_katy_perry_by.jpg...and if you can believe this, its a mesh for a 2d item like a texture. That wireframe is actually for the texture!

The image was presented to show the amount of detail capable in Vector art, compared to what most of you are assuming in arcade games. But the difference between a regular mesh (pixels) and vector mesh, is that a vector has unlimited resolution.

Like I said previously, its points on a graph, no matter the increments, these points can be scaled.

Bottom line though, the processing and man power to generate vector textures is a little far out.

Yes...vector graphics would be a nice thing to have...but maybe in ES VI, about 6 years from now.

Same here.

I know what it is, but I don't see why its needed in games (except for menus?).
Vector is terrible for photo realism.

have you even checked the whole post some guy posted hyper realistic models made of vectors. they are way better than the current modeling systems because when you get closer to a model it stays somooth

Post to a link (please).

Are they talking Vector models or Vector textures?

See this? http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj125/Gizmojunk/em.jpg

A vector texture of that would be about 3? megabytes.
