Vegans

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 2:52 pm

I'm not describing vegans on a whole, but I heard this vegan on the radio saying that we shouldn't eat bread, because yeast loses it's life to create it, ummmmmmmmmmmmmm, yeah, but I'm pretty sure celery is a higher life form than yeast, so do they eat rocks or something? because if they don't want to kill anything to eat, what can they possibly eat?

A vegan is someone who doesn't eat anything that comes from an animal. If these people claim to be vegan, but also disagree with eating yeast, that is a different belief that is seperate to veganism. A lot of people use terms like vegan, or vegetarian, to describe their diet, when it is completely inaccurate. Like if someone says they are a vegetarian, yet eat chicken. They are NOT vegetarian and they annoy the [censored] out of me because they're the reason people ALWAYS ask if I eat chicken or fish which has become the most irritating question to be asked. I simply ask them if they honestly think a chicken is a plant /rant.

Haha! Love that film. I think the "vegan" OP was talking about was a bit of a numpty, tbh. Reminds me of a girl I knew back at school who believed that we should try to get all animals to become vegetarian (putting lions in a zoo on a veggie diet, for example...).

I could never be a vegan or vegetarian. I love eating meat too much. I understand why people object on moral grounds, but someone who won't eat yeast for those reasons is clearly insane...

I didn't think that veganism would be so wide spread if they had those kinds of crazy beliefs, you can'tr get much nutrients from rock

If that is their belief, then who are we to dictate if it is sane or insane? If this particular person believes that we should not eat bread, as farfetched as this opinion goes, that is his/her opinion.

Not sure what discussion you hope to gain from this thread though, apart from attempting to ridicule them.

There's nothing wrong with being a vegan and I suspect this one is serious.

In the five years I spent being a vegetarian, I never gave anyone crap about their diets unless they happened to be a "vegetarian" who ate fish, just because it's a misnomer and I like to bust balls over things like semantics and syntax. It always seemed to me that certain people were always concerned that I was judging them and so could sometimes be ultra-defensive and would often come out of the gate with derisive comments.

Over the time I was vegetarian, I did feel that I was probably half-assing it if my real reason was morality, and considered switching to veganism... but yeast? Wow.

Anyway, I never thought I would stop being a vegetarian, but then I got into weight lifting; funny how things can change.

I agree with Milt - well, of course I do.

People in any group can have their own views on something whether it fits in or not, an individual stating their beliefs does not apply to the beliefs of the group as a whole. Discussion of veganism in general is fine for this topic, attempting to demean or make fun of it because of one remark on a radio program is not. Perhaps, OP, you have not looked at the reasons for someone becoming a vegan, perhaps you should do so before making a topic to enable you to make a more informed opening post to allow open discussion on the subject.

Everyone should eat what they want, if it makes them feel better. I like my meat medium-rare

I think some people get defensive because unfortunately there is a vocal minority that want to make sure everyone knows that their way of doing things is just better (lol, a quote from Scott Pilgrim just popped into my head again :P ). It's the same with most things - people can do what they want and not bother anyone else while doing it, but the few who look down from their imagined pedestal end up becoming the stereotype and ruining it for everyone else  If someone's a vegan/veggie, doesn't bother me - although I probably would raise an eyebrow if they mentioned the yeast bit.

My wife works a a Veterinary Clinic and 2-3 time a year she has someone bring in a sick cat, when she tells them that it looks like malnutrition the response is "But we have the cat on a very healthy all natural vegan diet!!" Yep, Malnutrition, the can't isn't getting all the amino acids it needs to live.

I do have one question for any Vegan or Vegetarians to whom it might apply. I get the fact that someone has made the choice to not eat meat, the reasons may vary but the end result is the same. I am confused by products like Tofu-Burgers, Tofurckey, meatless Bacon and many others. I know that not every one eats this stuff but for those that do I've always wondered why? If you decided not to eat meat, why eat fake meat? To some extent I can see the point of "wanting to fit in" but if you are with other veggies then they understand and if you are with meaties then you are still eating something different.

I was just inquiring as to if this was common belief amongst vegans, not eating met and eggs etc. isn't really worth dissing someone

I don't. I never hear anyone complain when a lion kills a zebra and eats it, but when i dare to eat a cow suddenly I'm a terrible person, come on. What's the difference really?

Self-awareness and factory farming, probably.

I'm glad they exist. How else am I going to get dairy-free macaroni and (soy) cheese, and (tofu) chicken-pot-pie frozen meals? :) (I'm lactose intolerant)

Of course, I wouldn't mind real chicken in the pot pie. But, I'll take tofu over having stomach pain.

EDIT: clarification. The pot pie is "vegan" so if I want to eat this pot pie made without dairy, I have to put up with the tofu.

Pretty much the simple way to deal with it is that vegetarians are okay, and vegans are nuts.

A vegetarian girl told me this, and I'm inclined to agree with her.

Haven't seen any aliens from Vega. Don't think that it's inhabited.

They don't exist.

He must be confused, because all food comes from life. Vegans are just people that won't eat or use any products that come from animals, including honey.

Members of a species which evolved to eat both meat and plants?

farfetched
