Vehicles in Fallout

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 7:48 am

But wasn't the guy who saw them on drugs?

But like Colonel said, how could he even hallucinate what a horse looked like if they are extinct and he has never seen one (and since he has likely not "read up" on them)?

I don't see what the big deal is about horses and wny they absolutely have to be extinct. I'd think it would be interesting if they weren't.

I really don't want vehicles. Takes away the exploration and gameplay, just flying through the wasteland wouldn't feel right..

They have plenty of vehicles lying around, I would like to use them for SOMETHING. Imagine driving around in a around Duece and a Half that you found at a old military base, or a tank. Tank can be made to shoot .308 or 5.56 and tank rounds, course it needs to be a Sherman to keep with the times. Or a Panzer that you find in a old museum.
Bracing for impact!!!

I'd rather the only vehicles we're permitted to drive be limited to Military cargo trucks or below. Tanks and etc could be in barred locations like say Adams Airforce Base or something.

There would be more limitations put on the tank(or a apc) than other vehicles just because of the weight and treads. Treads have to be changed often and tanks take up a LOT of fuel. They also wont be as fast or be able to go the same places as other vehicles. And as for the cargo truck we should be able to mount a machine gun or minigun on it and have the follower be able to use it, maybe even a missile launcher or grenade launcher. No infinite ammo though.

Hmmm, how about a refurbished tank that is jury rigged to fire missile launcher missles, mini-nukes, and .308 or 5.56m rounds. All of this ammo must be on your persons though to help balance it for a mission.

Yes vehicles, I added this in my Fallout 4 forum and the suggestion thread. Just make it where you have to fill up gas and what ever the vehicle takes.

I think you should have to load it into the actual vehicle, then when it runs out you have to load more in. The mininuke one would give you a reason to actually use them.

Oh no, I meant 'on your persons' as a means of saying that uh, you have to have the ammo to load the tank yourself, so it can't have infinite ammo.

I see, just as long as I get to see a animation of my character loading a tank.

the maps IMHO are to small for a vehicle unless it went SLIGHTLY faster then running speed, which would probably kill its use.

For there to be cars, the map needs to be much larger and the cars shouldn't drive too fast. I am pretty certain there will be a larger map for Fallout 4. The driving of a car should not feel anything like in Borderlands or how it looks like in Rage. You are not meant to race with them. The speed would be faster than running speed, but not so slow they're useless. They wouldn't be useless though, due to their big inventory space.
I am thinking if we were to see cars, Fallout 4 should take place in Detroit aka Motor City. A reason as to why there are operational vehicles.

Also, one thing:
Inconsistent with previous Fallout games, where vehicles were stated to run on electric engines drawing power from on-board batteries, the cars were supposedly nuclear powered, with a small reactor to the rear of the vehicle.

So, the cars originally ran on batteries, charged with nuclear power, and not a reactor at the back. Cool as the idea is though, it's not really that good when you get shot at or crash into things. Anyways.

Battery-powered vehicles:
http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090514220427/fallout/images/thumb/7/7b/Fo1_Corvega_Composite.png/830px-Fo1_Corvega_Composite.png

- Faster than the average car (can be upgraded)
- More fragile than the average car (can be upgraded)
- Runs of batteries, medium consumption (can be upgraded)
- Doesn't blow up when damaged.
- Bad when it comes to off-road, stick to the roads (what's left of them) and flat terrain (cannot be upgraded to off-road better)
- Not a good idea to go road killing with (will damage you and your car, aswell as slowing you down alot, depending on what kind of critter you hit)
- Cannot mount guns (or what do you think?)
- Below average trunk space.

http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20091025220204/fallout/images/thumb/5/56/HighwaymanRender.png/830px-HighwaymanRender.png

- Unique car.
- Faster than the average car (can be upgraded to be the fastest car)
- Average damage resistance (can be upgraded)
- Runs on batteries, medium consumption (can be upgraded)
- Doesn't blow up when damaged.
- Average when it comes to off-road, but can be upgraded. Still, roads and flat terrain works the best.
- "Medium-effective" to go road killing with, it's somewhat sturdier than the Corvega.
- Can be upgraded to mount a small to medium gun (or?)
- Huge trunk space.
- Can take 5 passengers instead of 1.

Reactor-powered vehicles:

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Highway_patrol_car

- The fastest car unmodded (can be upgraded to even faster, at the cost of vehicle control)
- Average damage resistance (can be upgraded)
- Uses a nuclear reactor, doesn't have to be refueled (or you refuel it much less often)
- Risk of exploding after recieving a lot of damage (stupid idea) but can be upgraded to be more stable so it won't explode, but instead an unrepaired car will leak a lot of radiation.
- Average when it comes to off-road but can be upgraded (but combining this with the high speed upgrade can have dire consequences)
- About as sturdy as the Highwayman when it comes to road killing, but it becomes a huge danger at top speed if the critter isn't squishy enough.
- Can be upgraded to mount a small to medium gun (or?)
- Average trunk space.

http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110302094515/fallout/images/thumb/0/0b/ChryslusAd2.png/830px-ChryslusAd2.png

- A bit slower than its Corvega predecessor originally (because I think the first one looks more streamlined), but can be upgraded to be faster than a fully upgraded Corvega original)
- Below average damage resistance, but still more than the original Corvega (can be upgraded)
- Below average when it comes to off-road, stick to roads and flat terrain. It is a sports car after all. (cannot be upgraded to off-road better)
- Road killing... still a bad idea when your car has an active nuclear reactor... But well, it's sturdy design makes it a bit better for it than the original Corvega, but still not ideal for it.
- Cannot mount guns (or what do you think?)
- Above average trunk space.

http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110302094421/fallout/images/thumb/b/ba/ChryslusAd1.png/830px-ChryslusAd1.png

- Being streamlined and reactor-powered, it's faster than the other Corvegas (can also be upgraded)
- A bit fragile though, below the V8 (can be upgraded)
- Uses a nuclear reactor, doesn't have to be refueled (or you refuel it much less often)
- Risk of exploding after recieving a lot of damage (stupid idea) but can be upgraded to be more stable so it won't explode, but instead an unrepaired car will leak a lot of radiation.
- Not good to go off-roading with (cannot be upgraded to off-road better)
- Road killing is also a bad idea, not as sturdy as the V8 here.
- Cannot mount guns (or what do you think?)
- Average trunk space.

http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090806152915/fallout/images/f/f3/CorvegaMZ.png

- Errr, pretty much the same as the V8 Corvega.
- A bit slower due to weight
- Ability to take 5 passengers instead of 1.
- Bigger trunk space.

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Pickup_truck

- The slowest car in the game, I'd say, though of course faster than running.
- It's much sturdier than the sports cars.
- Is pretty good at off-roading (and can be upgraded to be even better)
- Road killing is not a good idea due to its reactor being in front, but it can be upgraded with a snow plow for this purpose (and clearing debris on the roads)
- Can be upgraded to mount small to big guns in the pickup's bed, at the cost of storage space. Can also be upgraded to take more passengers, also at cost of storage space.
- Huge storage space in the back, but can be smaller to make room for upgrades.

Others:

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Motorcycle

- Pretty fast, though not the fastest (can be upgraded)
- Very weak, a bullet to the front tire and it'll send you flying (can be upgraded)
- Do not know what it's powered of. It looks like it runs on gas, it has an exhaust pipe and a gas tank. But on the Wiki, there's a note that suggests it runs of batteries. So, it's probably battery driven.
- Therefore it doesn't blow up, but needs refueling/recharging.
- This vehicle is the best choice at going off-road.
- Road killing is not that good of an idea, you will probably wreck the bike and yourself by crashing into people with it.
- Cannot mount guns (that'd be ridiculous on a bike)
- No additional storage space.
- It's greatest pro is how fast and agile it is compared to its size. It will be able to drive on roads that cars wouldn't be able to drive on due to debris, wrecked cars and such.

Probably many other cars, like some kind of http://www.richardsjohnson.net/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/jeep.jpg. Maybe someone wants a http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110326201413/fallout/images/thumb/7/76/FNV_Flatbed_truck.png/830px-FNV_Flatbed_truck.png.

Also, the vehicles can be targeted in VATS. If enemies drives them, like a motorized raider gang, then you can target either of the four wheels (to tactically make the vehicle veer into his friends), the driver, any other passanger (someone who is most likely shooting at you), the reactor at the back, or if it's a battery car, the front (I assume it's located at the front), aswell as the doors if you wan to. Or the mounted weapon, if there is one.

hmm, a national guard truck armored up with 2 or 3 guys on the back with machine guns/sniper rifles. Kinda scary thought really, picturing that in a fallout game as an enemy.

Pretty sure that vehicles in the wastes would use solid rubber tires instead of inflatable ones... you lose shock absorption (so reduced speed) but gain durability (no loss of speed from being shot or running over rocks).

No thanks for vehicles unless it's/they're used only as means for fast traveling as in Fallout 2. Rage is almost out of the door already and there's plenty of cruising around from what I hear, and the gameplay is already roughly similiar to Fallout 3 and New Vegas (FPS), so couldn't we just leave the racing and cruising and roadkilling out of Fallout and play Rage for those features?

From what I've seen, I don't like the looks of the driving in Rage at all. It's all too fast, vehicles feel too light, and weak while they probably aren't. I also don't like the driving in Borderlands at all.
If vehicles were to be in Fallout, they wouldn't be that fast. The the slowest car would be a bit faster than top running speed. Upgrading your car to be really fast will have its drawbacks. Lack of vehicle control is one. And then keep in mind that these cars are 200 years old, and if the engine is repaired or made from scratch by some genious, I still don't think they'll be super fast sports cars as pre-war. Then there's the lack of good roads, there will much likely be holes and debris in the way, which will be very unpleasant at high speed, and you won't reach top speed driving off road.
Another thing is that I want the cars to be kind of clunky. They are 50's cars and they were clunky. Then then have enlarged them even more. They are fat, broad and long. Imagine the control of them, the turning radius will probably be pretty huge. I know the Corvega commercial says "0 to 60 in .5 sec", but again, they are 200 years old and the engine is most likely in the same condition. But driving a car in Fallout, I want them to feel real heavy.
They would be a means of transportation faster than running, but slow enough for you to not miss enjoying the beautiful landscape. You would be able use them as storage. You would be able to customize them.
Fallout 4 would also need a much much better physics engine, so it could be done. Oh, and crashes gotta have realistic consequences. Nothing where your car rolls over and you just crack the window, and drive off again like nothing happened. More like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maV9Pr-mtZQ&feature=related if anything.

I dunno. If it only marginally faster than running, clunky, heavy and in [censored] condition, I'd say it'd be more of a nuisance than of any real benefit - and alternatively, if it was fast, slick and in top condition it'd make the map (which is, no doubt, going to be about as big as in F3, NV or Skyrim) feel pretty small, and it'd introduce the GTA problem (mowing down everything on its way - which I see as a problem as there is no police force to chase you down, and including such would feel just ridiculous).

The way I see it, including a car (or cars), is a tricky task to get right in this setting with the current gameplay so that it won't feel overpowered or alternatively more disadvantagious than beneficial, or just plain stupid. I'd still leave it out, as I don't see the benefits of having it.

Folks didn't mind the use of horses in Oblivion, so as long as vehicles are treated the same way I don't see a problem. However, they should be the rarest of things; perhaps the goal of a quest or three.

Vehicles should be able to go a lot faster than running speed, else whats the point of them. But they need to have drawbacks to them, such as if you flip it your screwed and cant flip it over without someone really strong or a special tool.

To answer this I just quote you again:

I don't see the benefits of having it.

That is right. You can't see anything good with vehicles in Fallout, you just see the bad.
I try to take away the racing label from cars in games, I take away their 100mph, I take away their high health, I take away their ability to mow people down without consequences. But it all just became "more of a nuisance" instead.
