Vendors not refreshing inventory/caps. Bug or my fault?

Post » Sun Nov 23, 2008 9:57 am

The vendors in the game are not refreshing their inventory or caps like they used to no matter how long I wait to come back to them. Was this intentional on the programmers part? Earlier in the game I kept quitting and re-loading so that the weapon mods that I wanted would show up in certain vendors' inventories.

I am also wondering this. I still have not come across the extended mag for the hunting rifle and I have done everything there is to do in the game.

Have you waited 73 game hours in one session? I don't think you get the inventory refresh unless you elapse 73 game hours in one session. If you play 40 game hours, exit out, then come back and play another 40 game hours it does not work.

Also, have you checked back after a level up?

Have you bought anything from the vendor before you waited? It seems to make the inventory change more if you do that. But that could be coincidence on my part.

And, finally, it can take several inventory refreshes to get the gun mod you want. This game seems to know which mod you really want and takes steps to hide it from you like it's playing "Where's Waldo" I have played the waiting game 8 times once to get a mod.

Vendors do seem to refresh their inventory a little too often. I've tried waiting for three days, but I think as well if you're waiting in the same area it doesn't work. Then again, the casinos are even worse about refreshing it seems, as I could swear I'd be away for 3+ days, come back and they still wouldn't be re-stocked. The easiest way though, is stand in front of the vendor and save, then exit out of the game entirely, hold down the A button (on xbox or playstation of course) while it's loading the game until the obsidian logo pops up, and you reset the cache and the vendor will be restocked.

I say stand in front because for some reason clearing the cache doesn't seem to reload some vendors if you're not in front of them.

It's a bug. Save, quit (completely) and reload while in the same cell as the merchant to force refresh their inventory.

On the technical side, in the modding section it was just discussed that the merchant inventory containers are supposed to be in a separate, inaccesible cell, some merchant's aren't, which causes this bug (or that's how i understood it :D).

I didn't realize that was a bug, but it actually makes sense. The casinos especially, NEVER seem to refresh.

The system will cache cells so that they may not completely re-render when you come back after exiting out of the game. By clearing your cache, you force the game to recreate the cell, which will also reload the inventory. Of course this is no gurantee that you are going to get something different in the new inventory. However, the issue I alluded to in my post is still in place as far as game time.

On the PC, sometimes I reboot the machine between sessions to clear any cell caches.

I know, I just meant that I'd clear the cache and then go to another vedor near by and he would still be completely out. I wasn't sure sure how they organized the inventories and everything though, although tojka just described it above, so now I guess I know. But for whatever reason it seemed like it would only effect local cells and not ones throughout the game in different load areas, when I was under the impression that shouldn't be. Though that could simply be because it is a glitch causing the problem. IDK. My knowledge is about 50%, so I certainly don't claim to know everything or be an expert.

Merchants are really prone to breaking in NV, at least on PS3. My buddy has picked up the game since I started that thread, gloria van graff already broke for him only 15 levels in.

it's irritating, but not the most. To me that's got to be the crappy stacking issues with stuff. It will show 2 pistols, but I remove 2 and 7 more show up... it makes it impossible to keep up with what I have. And trying to repair everything sometimes items wont stack, instead the value will slightly differ so they will appear different on the list. Now THATS a real pain in the butt.
