PC version looks worse than Xbox version

Post » Wed Dec 22, 2010 3:25 pm

Or does the PC version look really fugly? I recently went from HD Xbox 360 to a maxed out 1920x180 PC oblivion, and I'm not impressed. Sure, you have longer view distance but that is it. For me the PC version looks really bland and blurry. Anyone had similar experiences?

I hardly agree, I think the PC version looks way better, if you have the correct mods and hardware to run it. http://i438.photobucket.com/albums/qq102/Starforce9/Overlook.jpg

It's more than likely that you're just now noticing what was already there with your 360. With a TV, you're sitting fairly far away from it, regardless of how large it is. With a monitor, you're probably a foot or two away from it. Since you're a lot closer to the display, you'll notice low-quality textures and what-not a lot more.

What kind of card do you have? Are you running HDR or antialiasing, or are you forcing both?

Either way, it's pretty irrelevant due to the fact that PC has access to QTP3, OBGE, OBSE, RAEVWD, ScreenEffects, Water Replacers, etc, etc, etc.

Oooh. I like.

It should be noted that a lot of stuff was removed to allow this game to run with performance on consoles, add back all the pretty stuff and the console would almost grind to a halt.

I have the PC version and use a 22 inch lcd monitor, along with texture upgrades I know the console could not handle, the pc version wins hands down.

Do folk still do this?

I know there are controllers and pads for the pc which are very much like console controllers, personally I still prefer the keyboard as my reaction times are faster.

Eh? Do people still sit close to their monitors in relation to how close they sit to their TV's? I imagine they do, if their computer is at a desk which they are sitting and playing at. They might sit further away from their monitor if they are using a pad or a wireless keyboard/mouse, but I never have.

I normally play games on my Vizio tv, using a Logitech Wireless Keyboard and mouse. It works out pretty well, I have my gaming chair set up about 5 feet away and it seems fine for games.

Out of curiosity, does your TV limit what resolution you can use?

It goes up to 1920x1080.

I actually recently stopped playing my Xbox 360 due to Oblivions amazing graphics on the PC.

Starforce, that's an amazing picture. Are there any mods used for it?

I have every setting maxed on the PC, playing it at full resolution on my 42" 1080p Vizio. I also have the 360 version. Vanilla Oblivion looks better on the PC hands down, and then you add mods.

There are a lot more considerations beside resolution to games like these. you have to go into your video card 3D setup to max-out the settings. if you don't have a relatively high end card you can't do that.

Since the game won't do HDR and Anti-Aliasing, you can set the game for HDR and your video card for AA. Also pump up your card's Anisotropic Filtering. That's what helps the textures look good close-up. AA takes away the jaggies on diagonal and round objects. there are other behind the scenes graphic magic that you have no control over?most having to do with lighting. If your card doesn't support them, you're out of luck.

Check this thread and list of video cards http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=797401&hl=\video+card\

ah trust me, my video cards supports all that. Vanilla still looked like crap on PC compared to the Xbox360 version though (yeah, I know sitting close to the monitor matters, but this is irrelevant).

After doing some modding though, the PC version looks amazing.

I'm on PC. I run some mods, but absolutely none that affect scenery. From a vanilla on PC scenery perspective, here is a shot that looks a little similar to the amazing shot by Starforce:

I've never played on anything by PC, so I can't compare to other platforms. I'm happy though. :)

One problem then you install Oblvion on a pc with a modern graphic card setup will not recognise it and sett graphic to low. Simply try to set it to high and see if you get any slowdown.

Oh, that's a good point. I have my monitor set to optimum resolution, and the game settings at max. Runs fine, looks good. My computer's about 4 years old and had a 'midlife' upgrade a year or so ago to a nicer graphics card and some more RAM - I don't really understand that stuff, but it works pretty well. :)

I'd say it's probably just you, not that I've ever played Oblivion on anything other than PC, so I haven't seen the Xbox 360 graphics first hand, but looking at screenshots and videos of the console versions, at least, I'd say that the PC version, assuming you're running it on the highest possible settings on a high end computer, not using any ini tweaks that would change the graphics for better or worse, and have a good monitor and are using the highest resolution it supports, the PC version looks either the same as the console version or somewhat better. But of course, if you have the PC version, want your game to look better, and can do so without murdering your computer, you'll probably use graphics mods anyway, which naturally can make the game look much better than it ever possibly could on consoles simply because they don't have access to such mods. But even without mods, I'd argue that with some modifications to your ini, you can make the game look better than on a console because some ini settings can be used to set certain aspects of graphics to something higher than what is possible in the in-game graphics options. Using the ini to enable full water reflectrons comes to mind, now, I never play Oblivion without activating reflections for statics, trees, actors, and such.

It pretty much entirely depends on two things: what kind of hardware you have and what kinds of settings your running the game on. As far as the blurriness goes, your probably using too much anti-aliasing. Too much just muddies up the graphics and kills your FPS. I little bit is a great improvement but too much svcks.

Starforce, that picture it freakin' awsome.

It depends entirely on the PC, on mine it doesn't even play. My hardware tops out at the Half-Life 2/Battlefield 2 generation of graphics. Which it can handle to maximum effectiveness but anything after that doesn't run very well.

For anyone with older/slower hardware, be aware that you can view the highest level graphics as long as there is nothing going on (such as combat). Simply set the graphics to the highest setting and reload the game. Enjoy the sunset, then lower the graphics and continue on. My current graphics card is an nVidia 8800GS which is more than sufficient to deal with Oblivion but until I got it (about two years ago) I simply diddled with the settings when I wanted to watch a sunset.

Brash made a series of comparison screenshots a few years ago of Oblivion running on our various computers. The difference between our slowest computer running on low settings and our current computers (now four years old) running on highest settings is dramatic:

If you have the right set up pretty much [i]any[i] game will look better on PC. Always.
And that's not me being a "PC elitist" I personally prefer gaming on my X-box but that's besides the point.

Also, if you have a nice 1080p hdtv and have your console set to 1080p there shouldn't be that big of a difference.
( obviously I'm not counting any mods used to update textures and view distance )

I keep seeing that golden armor she's wearing, is it from a mod? I don't remember seeing it in game.
