PC version unplayable due to constant CTD

Post » Fri Dec 02, 2011 11:40 am

Game keeps crashing on me evry 10 min or so. I am tired of saving it every step of the way.. It run half decent when I was in Riverwood and Whiterun, but once I started eploring further out it just cant run 5-10min before crashing to desktop all of a sudden. I cant be the only one expirienceing this either. I need a patch to fix this game cause tbh I am almost ready to put it on the shelf somewhere. :((
I am running Win 7 64bit, i7-960, nvidia 460 GTX SLI.. nothing wierd about this setup and this should have been tested before this game went live..

I never played any other Elder Scrolls games before and I can say that the content is great but I am very disappointed with technical part due to constant ctd. Fix your game Bethesda so we can actually enjoy it. kk thx

Go to the PC subforum and you will find lots of suggestions from other people with this problem. I followed the advice there and I played 10 hours today without a crash.

I experience a crash to desktop maybe once a day, but that's about it. I have pretty much the same set up as you except I have 470 GTX SLI.

this might be obvious but make sure you have the latest drivers, and check the PC support section for some performance .ini mods.

I never once had a CTD on PC, so I think the problem is in your end.

Qiox has the right answer.

You are not the only that is experiencing crashes and other technical problems.
But the truth is, for the majority of PC users, the game is running fine.
I've got ~50 hours played, and haven't experienced a *single* crash, lockup or even serious hickup.
(OK, l was lying, I've seen a few slowdowns. Only 2-3 times. Restarting the game fixed it immediately. If that happens once every 10-30 hours I am playing, I am fine with that).

It might be your videocard drivers. It might be your videocard SLI-profile. It might be your mobo drivers. Your cpu driver (kind of mobo driver). It might be your soundcard, or sound settings. Did you see the notes about sound settings ? Lots of stuff you can try to fix your crashes. It might take a while, but there's no reason why you can't have a stable game too. Good luck.

So far Skyrim has been more stable at launch on my computer than either Morrowind or Oblivion. One CTD so far, in twenty-seven hours of playing. I agree with Bukee: the problem is most likely on your end.

I've been getting a CTD or so a day, with no warning and no error messages at all. That's why I've taken to fully saving every few feet. In 33 hours I've saved 180 times. :)

There's a 10 page thread about it somewhere. It's definitely a problem but with absolutely no error messages appearing anywhere I have no idea how to track it down. All drivers are fully updated, no other game does this kind of thing.

Sorry dude but the CTD is on your end because my game works perfectly running for hours with no CTD. Try these simple steps:

1. Download the latest drivers for your graphics card.
2. Go to the windows sound settings, advanced, then choose a lower sound setting.
3. Are you using mods? Try removing any mods that you may be using because some will trigger CTD events.
4. Go to both of the Skyrim exe files and make sure they are set to "run as administrator".
5. In the game settings for Skyrim set every setting to low and uncheck all other settings to see if theirs any difference.
6. If you have SLI enabled make sure to set your Nvidia settings so that 3D applicatons control all settings.

Sorry to say, but it may be the GTX 460/470. I had the same problem with my GTX on Crysis and Oblivion. Ended up throwing it out and going with a Radeon 6950. Now I have no issues at all.

As long as you have the latest drivers installed the game should run fine, but it doesn't.

It's not just on his end, there are quite a few people that are experiencing CTDs, he is not the only one. He shouldn't have to lower any settings, his computer more than meets the minimum requirements.

Bought a new Alienware PC... i7... 16Gb RAM... 2GB x2 6990 Radeon cards....

I spent the dough and would be extremely disappointed if the game didn't run perfectly. I have ZERO problems to report. I run on the highest settings possible. The game is amazing.

Okay, enough bragging... update all drivers... defrag.. whatever you do... but the game itself is fine. Good luck man.

I know. But it's a well known issue that I don't know has ever been solved...just Google GTX 460/470 freeze crash and it'll come up. It was unsolvable for me (I spent weeks on it). I ended up selling it and moving on to my Radeon.
