Vertical and perimeter exit lines

Post » Sun Apr 05, 2009 2:00 am

Descent3 was fun bc it gave the ability to fly outside (and for other reasons as well). However, every level was surrounded by mountains and when you tried to fly over the mountains it was like an invisible barrier keeping you always out of reach.

My idea is to go with the ace combat 4 model from PS2. Basically when the space ship crosses the red perimeter line and keeps flying in that direction first the game gives you a warning and then thinks you want to exit mission and does that for you. Since we are dealing with a space craft and not a military jet we must also add a “vertical perimeter line” to prevent it from going into low earth orbit. Still I hope to get nice areal views out of this thing. Absolute Velocity svcks. It’s too slow.

oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooOO GOD I love the Ace Combat Series! 4, 5, 0, and 6!

Anyway! Sounds good, but another idea would be to have no exit lines (possibly no celing) and have the map in sort of a loop. If you are flying straight east past a building and you are looking at your map and you reach the end of the map, your little arrow or whatever is used to represent yourself will appear on the west side and you will eventually pass the same building. I got that idea from Hellbender, a game similar to Descent back in 1995. Maps were huge so you didn't notice that you were going around in circles.

Hmmm. If you have ever seen the Descent 3 Trailer on YouTube, some scenes looked like the would was more open and not like the boring unusual mountains and canyons seen in D3.

BTW, the Descent forums here are veeeeeery slow. If you are going to fight a war, do it efficiently, unremittingly, or don't do it at all--I'm not into ethics, I'm into efficiency.--Benjamin St. John "Descent" by Peter Telep

Yes, Hellbender was fun bc you actually have the whole planet as a level. However most Descent levels are more or less smaller, and that kind of makes them more realistic. I am not saying that descent should not go on this scale but that makes the story line has to be written from planet to planet and not from mine/ space station / mine type thing. Absolute Velocity svcks. It’s too slow.
