a very controversial, but popular, topic

I don't care, but nudity hurts the game's image (even though we can argue about how appropriate it is until the cows come home). I would rather TES went for underwear so that BGS doesn't have to worry about the stupid Australian controversy.

How would it hurt the imago? Skyrim has clearly rougher artistic style than it's predecessors had, so nudity, head chopping etc. would fit in the theme quite well. Australians should be provoked instead of approving their way of the dark side. Anyway, this ain't a deal breaker but in principle, this should be in.

Why the [censored] is this even being talked about? It's not going to be in, and if it is, I'll be very surprised. Get mods if you cannot play the game without seeing someone naked.

Who says it would hurt sales? If that was the case, surely games like God of War and The Witcher wouldn't sell so well. There would probably be a public reaction yes but that is not necessarily a bad thing for sales, it certainly dosn't seems to have hurt Rockstar.

The nudity would be pushing a fine line. Certainly there would be a heavy amount of controversy involved (looking back at the uproar caused over Mass Effect's view of a naked backside) and it could even tread a fine line between M and AO in America. Microsoft and Sony both have policies that forbid AO rated games on their consoles. If it ever did end up with an AO rating, you would lose every single console sale. All of them.

The bad controversy involved would be enough to get it on a heavy number of "Do not buy" lists for uptight moral families. Almost no child would be allowed to play the game (Some parents are willing to allow M rated games for violence or language, but nudity would push the limit for many people) which would also make it lose sales. And it would also upset many prudes out there, who would also not buy the game. Yes, I would say that the nudity would hurt the sales. Maybe not in Europe. But I would say that the US, Australia, and several asian countries, all of which would have issue with this matter, count for a very large chunk of the game's sales.

I really hate to bring it back to consoles vs PC's, but this really falls under the same issue that Bethesda can't give every feature to the vanilla game just because console gamers want an experience as dynamic and customizable as PCs. No, I can understand that you may not be able to afford a PC to get mods such as the myriad of nudity mods available for Oblivion. But that's how life works. Is it my fault that I couldn't afford one of the new cars with GPS integration and an iPod dock? No, I get to drive my 10 year old car. It gets me from point A to point B just the same. I would love to have a new car with fancy features, but that's not how life works.

If you care that much about getting nudity in your games, you should be able to afford a new PC working part time over the summer. I bought a new Alienware that way. And I could have even cut the price by 75% if I just built it myself.

No, i would like to think that the world of TES is at least bound by similar rules than our world. Meaning that not every woman looks like a freaking porm star with huge [censored]. And not every man looks like a male model and has a giant [censored].
Unless that by better bodies you don′t mean the nexus mods, but realistic bodies...in that case i′m fine with it

This is the problem. I dont give a damn about the nudity (though I suspect that its almost entirely the point of better bodies). The problem, is oddly the better bodies. I want to feel like I'm inhabiting a convincing pseudo-medieval world. I'm fine with one or two people looking good, but when you half expect a nubile half-elf to knock on the door and suggest that her friend could fix the plumbing its probably going a bit far.

Glad to see someone reads prior post before posting. However I assume you don't have a family to support, I may be wrong. For some/many even working 3 jobs it can be tough to support 3 or 4 kids,

This is one of those cases- something that is left for modders to add, and that's the way it should be.

Full nudity potential adds almost nothing to the gameplay, but opens a huge can of worms with every group who wants to raise a stink about games. Lots of liability and negative (even if absurd and overhyped) press for minimal if any real gain? Don't see where the upside even balances, much less outweighs, the downside.

No, I don't have a family to support. I'm still trying to pay my way through college, so I suppose that's out of the question for me. No one said you had to work just one job. But that's really not the point. The point is that you really only have one option. And if you can't do that option, then life isn't going to bend over backwards to give you a suitable alternative. You'll get a non-nvde PS3 game because that's how Bethesda will make it. And they'll make it that way because they, too, would like to earn money, and do not want profits hindered by controversy.

I think it would probably hurt Bethesda's image or at least the image of TES. TES has a broad range of fans, and adding gratuitous nudity would in no way enhance the game. As others have said mods will likely be made that will add nudity. It makes not sense to throw it in just for the sake of nudity.

It's funny how some people are so arrogant with such an ego that they think their uninformed opinion is valuable. It really is funny :lmao:

Hey, it was your idea to make this thread for everyone to give their opinions on naked characters. I gave mine, and you obviously disapprove. Well good for you. So why don't you make it a point to show why my opinion isn't worth it, instead of trying to be insulting.

The following quotes are in response to the first quote

While a body replacement, and a nvde one at that is close to the first mod that I will be installing, I don't think that it would be a default option - even Better Bodies had a permanent underwear version for thous who wanted it :) Having removable underwear can be realistic, and hilarious in some cases (how about putting some enchantment on your knickers? :D), but with the amount of complaining and whining it will arise in the community it may be not the best move to make it a default setting...
But I see a problem for console players... So maybe an optional feature?

Yes, no jiggling jugs of hypnotic, nauseating power for me.

However....that would make for a wickedly evil sorceress. I'd have to kill her to get her to wear some less revealing attire. (Once again, in Morrowind you could unload your items onto the enemies and dress them)

I'm continuously amazed how in this society there's no problem on killing someone with dual wield axes or with a shotgun (in a game, of course), but there's controversy if a character appears nvde (not even with a boner*, simply without clothes). It's just incredibly hypocrital.

So yes, a nudity option for me, thanks.

*This can be said in these forums? Didn't meant to jump the forum filters or anything...

I agree nudity for nudity's sake is dumb, but it's not just that we want the world to be more free and it has a great variety of RP aspects to it. It may seem limited at first, but when you think about it there are many many possibilities. There should not be a push for six because someone can undress. The crude mods for oblivion was abominable and would fall into the category of pormography. The above quotes are those that support the proposed application for reasons aside from that.

You know what? I retract my earlier statement. Daggerfall had nudity, it would be consistent with past titles. However, I don't want to see nudity simply for the sake of nudity though. If it fits cool, if not, leave it out.

Gladly, You stated " Is it honestly more "mature" to have NPCs run around naked" that has not been advocated at all in this entire thread, I even explicitly said that I do not want that to happen. As have others. So if you just chose to ignore that and continued with your statement that we're advocating it or just skipped over the majority of the thread either way that was an absurd accusation.

Don't want it, don't like it, can not see why this is even an issue. Is it honestly more "mature" to have NPCs run around naked, or is it really just some sixual fantasy? Really, is the lack of male and female genitalia that detrimental to the game?

Keep the underwear.

Also, what Alaisiagae and Lattice said.

And next my previous post quoted many in this thread that want this NOT as a "sixual fantasy" many of us could care less for six in the game (or "sixual fantasies") and those few here who wanted it for RP sake only wanted a blacked out screen. That is why I made my comment to your "opinion"

It's not a question of what's good for RP. It's a question of sales and company image. Years ago, when I first picked up Morrowind, I was only 12 or 13. That game got me hooked to the series. If it had nudity, I wouldn't have even wanted to play it, much less been allowed to. If Bethesda tried to make every player happy, and fulfill every minor request such as this, they wouldn't earn any profit. It's not about people buying the game on principle, really. You'd be surprised how many gamers and non-gamers are sheep of the media. Especially considering non-gamers control the ability of their children to play games. If any parent hears about it in the news, sees the Nudity tag under the rating, or finds it out in any other way, that is a lost sale. Consider how many times that will happen, and that is thousands of lost sales. And the media will go crazy about it. Just read all of the other things they complain so much about.

Sorry. Deal with your underwear, play a game that roleplays better than Elder Scrolls with nudity involved, or make one yourself if you can't find one. This issue can be talked about until the earth crashes into the sun and life as we know it is vaporized to dust, but Bethesda will never change their stance on this, I can promise you.

I think a "barbarian"style, Viking inspired world should have at least partial nudity in it. I mean, if you look at early celtic stuff, things got real back in time.
In Occident, nudity became infamous because of late Christianism, early celtics actually didn't care that much to see a boob go free from a coat. I do believe most of the ceremonies to the gods were pretty messy, with naked girls and lamb blood everywhere dancing mad.
I'm kinda sick to see the "all beautiful and gloomy" medieval vision everywhere, à la "Lancelot" movie with sean connery.
Back in time it was hardcoe, brutal, dirty. No brushed teeth for you lady.
So the least you can do when you inspire yourself that much of a culture is to actually do it right.

I, for one, have read the entirety of this thread. And you know what I don't get? I don't get why you expect the developers to do this. Yes, there is a LOT of things we should expect them to be doing - this is not one of them. This is one of the cases where mods are the better option. Why do you not seem to understand that?

One of my favorite mods for morrowind and oblivion is the "better bodies" mod (THIS IS NOT A THREAD ABOUT THE BETTER BODIES MOD). Most of you who use mods probably know of it. What it does is get rid of the glued on underwear and when you take everything, you take EVERYTHING. Revealing otherwise revealed "mature" parts. I would like this added to the game with a default setting being the cloths stay on. It shouldn't be a problem if "underwear" is an option to take or leave when looting. Personally I enjoyed streaking in morrowind. Made the comments all the more funny. What say y'all?

The option should be for equipable/unequipable underwear on the option menu. Even if turned on you would still have the option of actually taking the knickers.
That way you can make it "appropriate" when necessary.

Highlighted points

The problem is that the ESRB would have Bethesda's head. Also, I don't see the point of running around naked really. If it added some value to the game other than getting some lonely person off I would understand.

The monsters I could see having nudity just because god of war, dragonage, and Dante's inferno all had naked mobs. I would put it in just for the BS that happened with oblivion and the mod that got them the M last time. I could handle and a lot of people could handle nudie scrolls but its not worth the risk. If you want boobies mod it in its as simple as that.

Seem is the key word in that statement. I do understand it. I'm sure most people here who I for this option being in vanilla get it. However that does not mean that this isn't a topic worth discussing. What do people want in TES (in this particular case it's not wanting underwear to be permaglued to our character) not "what makes the most business sense" I'm fairly certain they won't add it to skyrim, will they ever add it. We don't know they world could end in 2012 and it may be never. Thing is what we do here is state our opinions on what TES is and what we want from it and what more we want in it. Some want dragon mounts that's more ridiculous than taking off your underwear, but some people consider that opinion more valid. But in the end it's just us discussing pros and cons of things.

This is a silly topic - of course the vanilla game will have underwear on the character models, no question about that.

A fun fact, however: I modded Oblivion, Fallout 3 and New Vegas to contain full male and female nudity, and I'm so used to it that I'd play the game with anyone around, always forgetting there's virtual genitalia depictions displayed on the corpses I loot. To me, the nudity of those mods isn't very sixual so I tend to forget. Probably I'm an exception, but for me the nvde mods are the equivalent of the nudity in classical scultures and panting: it's not embarassing to look at that in public.

But what it really does so well, is making for some awesome plot immersion: I remember when in the Shivering Islands I saw the prisoners of the Shivering Isles being used for experiments by that woman whose name I forgot, and because of the mod they were completely naked which made the situation all the more menacing.
And just yesterday, I wandered by the Legion's camp and I saw a crucifixed guy begging for mercy - he was fully naked, and that again helped to underline the scene.

Even if in Skyrim they wear full shirts and underwears when they're undressed, I won't care. I'll download the inevitable nudity mods the community will make, but even if those mods will never be crafted, it won't be a great difference. Just one of the many extra polishings that mods provide.

Nudity would not be a wise financial move for the company. Having it in would mean lost sells. Whether we agree with the reasons for folks not buying it or the controversy surrounding it or not, it's just a fact. The lack of nudity would probably not cause lost sells. Now, do I want them to make enough money to ensure the continuation of this series? The answer for me is yes. Do I want them nudity in this or any game? My answer is I don't really care one iota about it. I am far from being offended by nudity and I am also far from thinking it must be present to seen realistic or add to my role playing. I just don't care about nudity at all.

In fact, I have always found people more appealing when they keep their cloths on.

My summation of it all is that they should do what is best for the company and the series and leave it out and I am thankful they will include the Creation Kit for modders remove cloths should they like. If someone wants nudity in their game so badly, they will know they should buy it for PC and learn to mod or depend on others to release mods.

Having worked as a nurse for 28 years, I've seen all the nvde folks I care to see in one lifetime and let me tell you, if you want reality in your game, the nudity would be a sight for sore eyes. Most folks don't have good looking bodies when naked I assure you.
