i just hope it wont be repetitive. imagine youre a dedicated barbarian with 2 handed axes throughout the whole game. and its the same finishing move every time you kill someone/something.

I hope if you finish something off with a fire spell it gets burned to a crisp.

There's no way it could be more repetitive than previous TES combat systems.

Yeah, there's one "cool factor" I really couldn't care less about.

I just hope character skills are well implemented into the combat system.

I heard there is guys who worked on Dark Messiah working on combat in skyrim. Is this true?
The combat in DM was IMO really fun!

Finishing moves.

Just install the latest version of Deadly Reflex for Oblivion. And you'll have your finishing moves and much much more :)

The official info says a diferrent move for every type of target and weapon. Worst case scenario is that you'll get the same move every time you kill an Orc with a long blade (no racism intended) and a different one each time you kill him with a warhammer. Take those two weapons and use them against a yeti and you get two other moves.

I hope they took influence from Demon's Souls combat. By far the best combat in any game ever (with some competition from Mount & Blade). It's so accurate, responsive, raw and extremely physical and it just feels perfect. You have to test it to believe it (watching it on YouTube doesn't give you the whole truth in this case, believe me).

Oblivion combat already was amazing for me, so raw and physical, so I don't demand much change in Skyrim apart from tweaks that restrict cheating such as back-pedaling (and that's already a confirmed fix in Skyrim).

What I don't like is animations within combat, animations that are constantly triggered and play before you for a second or half a second and during that time you have no control over your guy. I hate that. Notable examples of games using that are hack'n slash games in general (such as God of War and Devil May Cry) and in the RPG world The Witcher. That sort of combat is gimmicky and feels dead to me. I want to be in total control of my character. That's why Im a little sceptical of finishing moves.

But Demon's Souls implemented finishing moves in a beautiful way. Subtle and elegant. You were in total control of everything during combat except for a neatly inserted finishing move animation that took a second. I hope Skyrim's will work like that.

I just hope bows are not tools for activating things from a distance but actual weapons used for killing in combat.

Can we dual wield shields?

I shall pioneer this combat technique and bring it to Tamriel.

They shall call me... The Battering Ram.

I did try to make my own finishing moves in Oblivion but it was always such an anticlimix when they retained a tiny bit of HP after that awesome forward thrust or side-swing/disarm attack.

I'm not too sure about the combat system until I see it in action.

I like the idea of finishing moves having an effect on enemies, maybe stealth will be very effective and brutal looking after all! And I did love what Demons souls did with its combat system, maybe it'll be similar. But I wonder if having to take whats out your hand to activate that hands spell will seem a bit clunky, like playing oblivion for a while then jumping back to Morrowind seemed really inefficient with magic to weapons, strategic but clunky.

So I'll just have to wait and see about that as well, mind you I think it'll work out if you plan your spells around each hand. and if I can block with one hand while I'm casting with the other, that covers the issue I guess.

I'm hoping we get to parry if we dual wield weapons too, I mean if you've ever fought with a weapon in each hand and got over the tangle mess stage you spend a lot of time parrying to off balance an opponent and get in close for a strike.

Since we'll have two sides with weapons in either hand can I block a strike to my right side with my left hand? I wonder if thats how it'll work as well.

There a four triggers remember? Two probably correspond to each hand since before the left bottom trigger was for blocking, the right bottom trigger was for attacking and the right bumper was for magic.

No its just a rumor because bethesda softworks now own arkane studio and people dont realise bethesda softworks and bethesda game studios are separate entities

Thats what I'd like, (For console play anyway) to tap the button for spells and the trigger for what weapon or shield I'm holding, but I recall reading that a character put his sheild away to cast a spell, so it makes me wonder if thats just shield specific or if thats how the whole system works.

Supposedly each weapon type will have a different finishing animation, but in addition that, your 2 handed axe will have a different finishing move for each of the various enemy type as well.

Are you sure about this? Because that amounts to a lot of animationwork xD. ANyway, I'm not a fan of the whole finishing moves thing either. I mean wouldn't this mean we're locked in place for a bit while our character does whatever animation he has to? This seems really annoying. I'm hoping finishing moves are extremely quick and wont be triggered with every kill
