I also have Project Nevada and the JE Sawyer mod. I am LOVING this playthrough and it completely makes me think about every decision I make. That being said, I need some advice.

Currently I am playing a fairly typical sniper. Light armor, best long ranged scoped rifle I can find, etc. What I need advice on is a close quarters weapon. Since I am in light armor and playing on Very Hard, I die pretty darn fast. Not only that, but enemies can also take quite a few bullets.

Should I.....

Start focusing on melee weapons?

Maybe shotguns with shotgun surgeon?

Pistols with, say, cowboy perk for as much damage as possible?

Maybe even explosives?

Any thoughts or general advice would be appreciated!

For very hard, hardcoe, I can only say avoid doing anything if you want to live.
