Very strange AI behaviour

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 1:36 pm

So I was going inside a fort where a few Orc bandits resided. I had cleared them all except for the Bandit Chief. He turned up eventually and to my surprise he was pretty powerful compared to the rest. I panicked as I realised I was close to the verge of death and managed to jump onto some rocks in the main room. I took my bow and tried to snipe him to death as I stood in the unreachable position. And then weird things started to happen..

The Chief suddenly started to run around in the room like a maniac and he eventually entered the room nearby (same map). There he was hiding like a coward for a minute or so until he suddenly started saying stuff like "is he.. still there??" and "I think he have left.." as if he was scared of me or something. He sometimes moved slightly by the door opening but he then went back into the room..

Obviously the AI got messed up as I went to my position, leaving the orc unable to reach me.. and when he went into the room the "sneak eye" went from detected to hidden. But the whole thing appeared so life-like, as if it could have happened. It kinda reminded me of the game Amnesia: Dark Descent where we hide from monsters and wait for them to leave. It was as if the presumably strong orc on the inside was just a scared child, hiding in a small room until the scary monster had dissapeared.

In the end I manned up and went down and finished him myself without any significant difficulty. :vaultboy:

Anyone else seen AI behaving strange in contexts like this? I have never seen the AI make a completely another scene out of something that was supposed to be yet another swordfight.

I was stopped on the road by a bandit, demanding my things, I told her I don't have time for this, She ended the conversation, un-sheathed her weapon Told me to use carriages as I travel to avoid bandits, then proceeded to attack me, I don't know if she was giving me advice or just drew a line from normal NPC jargen.

I was clearing bandits from a fort thingy and got to this guy in a bedroom. I swung at him, and he died. Usually, it requires more than one hit and did on his buddies...so how was this one shot? Plus, there was no sound or appearance of the axe making contact. I swung, and he flew back, dead, I figure he was so startled he had a heart attack.

Once I fought a dragon by Morthal in the mountains, and he decided to ditch me and fight a goat instead in the distance. I've never been so offended by a dragon before, and the worst thing is.. He never came back.

Earlier this evening Lydia and I stumbled on a Dragon.........or the Dragon stumbled on us, I'm not sure. We were questing outside of Whiterun and it flies over us and circles us for legit like 6 or 7 minutes straight. The background music never changed, and the dragon never attacked us.....he just flew around and then disappeared over a mountain ridge. I was honestly disappointed.

Most NPC / wild animals seem to run away when your in an unreachable place, I've actually been the scared running and cowering like that, I figure they are gone jump off run the corner and guess whos been waiting for me? XD

There was one time I ran into a Forworn camp and shouted breathe fire to which the closest of them began to run saying "I give up" and other such dialouge, i'm not sure if they were so scared they just decided to give up and die but their leader briar heart jumped off the high wall I was next to and landed behind me dying on impact... suicide? scared of the Dragonborn I take it :P

Haha it's stuff like that that puts a smile on my face when they happen, so random

I've seen that before I think. What is even going on in the AI's head when it decides to do things like that?

NPCs and animals run away or use cover when they can't reach you and you start shooting them. I once managed to get on top of a large rock being chased by an ice troll and after one or two arrows the darn thing ran over to the only pillar far and wide and hid behind it.
