There are two radiant questlines in Skyrim that I have problems with:
- The Dark Brotherhood Forever, which has you kill conveniently generic random NPCs
- Deceiving The Herd (from Dawnguard), which has you kill a named NPC.
I have a problem with the first because it feels like it breaks the immersion, and also because it is far too easy to assassinate a generic character that just wanders around without a real schedule like "real" NPCs. I have a problem with the second because eventually it'll lead to the logical conclusion that all places in Skyrim will be virtual ghost towns, save children and inexplicable essential NPCs.
These problems could be solved by a mod that, when a named NPC dies, replaces them with a randomly-generated one with a random name and backstory. Random NPC generation exists already by way of bandit generation, and there is so much voice actor reuse that you could theoretically cobble together dialogue to give them a passable illusion of being a "real" NPC. You could have them take up the schedule and profession of the person who died (or, more realistically, give them a random profession and [reasonably] random schedule) to prevent the permanent and frankly unrealistic loss of services in a town or city.
How viable would this be? Would this only be possible with hard code or could you somehow do it with Papyrus and/or the Creation Kit?
