i can see what jaffe was talking about and appreciate what some of the more level headed posters have said in this thread. however he did show no class. that much is quite clear. u can dispute the value of class, but certainly he didnt have it. to be fair it was enjoyable to see a REAL debate on these kinds of things and so i appreciate jaffe for that. personally i can see what he is saying as self critique, because yes half of god of war felt like a cutscene or a quicktime event (doesnt everyone remember that GOW brought QTE to the fore in gaming?).
I agree tho, less tell more show, which is basically what hes saying (but in gaming terms). games have been going in the direction of flashy telling but its still telling. Oddly, i felt too that he seemed to be attacking TES, howver i dont see why. TES has the least amount of that crap of any game i know. Unless you are including dialogue. Todd has a tendency to play the devils advocate (hence why he refers to sports games alot, to show his diverse taste, when im sure most rpg fans hate sports games) but that can backfire when you face an aggressive force such as jaffe, as you can see.
However what i dont like about his show dont tell argument is that its this post modern crap that argues against context and against meaning. granted most games have [censored] for story, but hell most movies do now too. ill agree if you dont have a story to tell dont bother, but at the same time if we stop trying well...all we have is a bunch of mouse mazes to run around in.
