Video capturing software for Skyrim?

Post » Sun Dec 04, 2011 8:40 pm

Just curious if anyone has experimented with capturing video / audio from Skyrim with any success. I've been looking for an easy to use, affordable screen capture software, but most of them bog down really bad inside Skyrim.

FRAPs is the only one which seems to be able to handle the heavy FPS load and still looks good (but it doesn't double as an all inclusive screen capturing software like others)

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Thanks

You can do screen caps with FRAPS.

You can do both video capturing (i.e., gameplay footage) or still images (i.e., screen caps) using FRAPS. Most PC gamers use FRAPS and have for years.

Did some testing with Fraps today on PC. Working very well with the exception of after entering the main menu is starts to lag. Doesn't do this when fraps is off so. But other wise capture is very smooth and only drops my frames by about 15 which is nothing and not noticeable in video.

If you just want to take screenshots and not video, just press F12; the screenshot will be saved to your Steam Cloud.

I think my question is being missed.

I know FRAPs shoots good video IN GAME. The problem is it doesn't shoot video OUT of game. In otherwords, I'm looking for an all around, all inclusive video capturing software that I can also use when programming or just surfing the web, etc...

Well the title of your thread and your post are misleading since you ask for software to use in the game

Yes it does. Just tick the "monitor Windows Aero" in the FRAPS general tab. Obviously it works only under Aero.

Try Bandicam, it does everything real good. I use it and have no problems. It takes video, screenshots, and also takes video outside the game, like of your desktop and the like. Cheers.

I've seen that option but had no idea what Windows Aero is?

Just tried it, Bandicam is amazing.

Seems to do everything I need, and it's just as affordable as FRAPs.

Thank you very much!

I tried the free version of Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 a while back. It seemed promising, but I was trying it on Windows XP and discovered that the version I was using didn't play with XP. I gave up on that. But a couple days ago I upgraded to Windows 7, and started installing Expression Encoder just before seeing your post. I'll post my opinion of it later after I play with it a bit.

Okay, I didn't have any problems with running Expression on Windows 7 like I did with XP. But that's just with using the software, not recording my Skyrim gameplay.

I found the manner in which you select the recording section on the screen to be tedious. In addition, if you try recording while in full screen mode, your video will just show a black screen and you'll hear the audio. But the real negative with it is that the FPS in the recording appears to be pretty poor when compared to the actual gameplay. So in my opinion, in it's current form, Expression is probably not the best option for this type of video recording.

A while back I used Xfire to record stuff while playing Oblivion. I'm installing that right now and will see how well it works.

Alright, Xfire works pretty well. The FPS is smooth, and starting/stopping recording is easy. I did have to install a small update in order for it to recognize Skyrim, but after that I was able to launch the game and start recording. Xfire is free and is like an IM client for gamers. But the video recording portion is pretty handy.

Hopefully that helps!

Um no, I'm buying it for $40 or whatever the sticker is. Pennies for a good program that will work forever...

Thanks for the accusation tho.
