Video card crashes within 5 minutes of starting game

Post » Fri Dec 31, 2010 5:35 am

Before this crash happened, the only other time the game had done this was during a cut-scene when the second spire you enter explodes. (right after the time square mission) Now when I am able to actually play the game for more than 5 minutes, the game runs smooth no problems at all, no graphical errors, no freezes. Except now, anywhere between 5-10 minutes even just sitting at the "Press enter to begin" screen or during gameplay. My graphics card will crash turning the monitor off. I am still able to hear sound, but i have no control over my computer and i will have to manually power off/on the system. This happens almost 100% right now.

At one point I thought I had found a fix by running in XP SP3 compatibility mode and run as admin. After I did this I restarted the same time square mission and managed to play all the way through the mission with no crashes.

However, During the cut-scene in the next mission where you are running across the bridge and the bridge collapses (you have to press x to grab) right after the car hits you and you fall into the water, the graphics card again crashes and my monitor shuts off.

Now at this point, i figured something might be wrong in the game files (for whatever reason) i uninstalled and re-installed the game. Nope, same thing happens. Wait 5-10 min in menu or in-game and i get the black screen.

I also thought it was an overheating issue, but for 2 reasons that makes no sense. 1) crashes in the menu with no input from the user at all 2) my max gpu and cpu temps were 85/40. I was Using MSIAfterburner for gpu and PC probe II for cpu. ( I have read that most of the 5800 series runs kinda hot anyway. also, no other games have caused my system to overheat except the 1st crysis after playing for 8 hours.)

Here are my system specs:

if there is something im missing let me know i will find out about it and add it to the list. Also to be noted; No other games I play on this system have any problems.

When i can acutally play the game with no issues its freaking awesome. It is exactly what i want out of my video gaming experience. Utterly awesome to look at, to run around feeling like a bad ass and just to enjoy the over the top and epic story that this game has to offer.

For those of you at Crytek I have had the chance to speak with some of you at GDC and you guys really know your stuff. Its a shame that having your flagship title for your engine get off to such a rocky start. Also svcks when there are so many people out there that are giving you guys so much crap to sort through. Granted, it is kinda Crytek's fault. But soooooo many people do not realize how much damn work it is to actually make 5 minutes worth of awesome gameplay. I know these guys love their fan base and will work as hard as possible to fix/improve crysis 2 as much as humanly possible. Now if only i can finish the game.

Send these details to the guys over at Crytek. They can help identify your problem and help you solve it. Does the game support your GPU??
Nice rig by the way.
Cheers!!

its a 1GB ATI 5870. I dont see why it shouldnt. Its not that new of a card anymore.

well now its gotta be a driver issue, because it happens in Dirt 2 and that game never crashes.

Are you supposed to install display drivers by un-installing the old ones, reboot, install the new drivers and then reboot again?

Now I'm having the same problem as well. Earlier the game worked fine but its only now that I've begun to notice this problem - its just not possible to play the game for a straight 10 minutes without the screen turning black and the monitor giving way with the only solution being to power off and then power on the computer. I'm trying to figure out what was it that I did in the past few days that might have caused this issue and the only thing I can remember doing is upgrading the drivers !!!

Alright well thats kinda good that someone else has the same problem.

Now what kinda card do you have? since i believe this is strictly a card issue.(well it at least seems that way)

The only thing i have done as well is upgrade the drivers. Maybe i did not install the drivers the correct way and there is an issue there? And I stuck a huge ass fan right next to my computer svcking all the hot air out. That is all i have really done since i bought this game.

Try to get more room in your pc case, work our wires a little.
Get some cooling accessories like new PC case ,fans, etc.
put on a little amount of thermal paste on you gpu by opening graphic cards case.

it is all professionally wired, so there are def no wires in the way. the entire side of my case is off with the side case fan sitting on the back of the graphics card. I also have a fan sitting right next to it.

i do recall at one point the graphics card did reach over 100c. but only for an hour or so. Could I possibly have damaged it?

Your graphics card should never go over 85C. If it got over 100C, then you sir have failed. It's very likely that you damaged it somehow. I you ran it at over 100C for an hour then it's time to get a new graphics card because, heads up, you just melted your GPU. You should have stopped whatever game you were playing as soon as you saw it hit 90C. Then you should have figured out a way to get better airflow in your case before attempting to play another game.

Like I have already stated, you sir, have failed!

Set the following command in the autoexec.cfg file (you may need to create it, just stick it where the "system.cfg" file is located in the installation directory)

sys_MaxFPS = x

Where x is the maximum FPS you want.

When you're just sitting at the menu, your video card is probably rendering as fast as possible, burning it to death, VSync in Crysis 2 is buggy, so it's best to set a custom maximum framerate.

I have the same black screen crash problem with my laptop (it's a Toshiba Qosmio x300), only it crashes during pretty much every game and sometimes even when just searching the internet. It turns out that this laptop model and the x305 have GPU overheating problems (GPU and CPU share the same fan) after a while and really the only way to fix it is to downclock the GPU.

I am pretty sure your crashing is due to the GPU overheating especially because you said it reached over 100C. I would suggest returning the GPU for a new one if possible or buying a new card. You could open up your card and try applying new thermal paste to see if that works, assuming it's worth the hassle.

It's got to be the drivers for the video cards?......I've got a similar system and it has never crashed. But I'm using Nvidia.

Works fine in SLi mode also.

I have the same processor you do, the only other major difference is the Dual Msi 460GTX cards and 24GB of system memory.

If your card is totally fried then you have to replace/repair it. I had the same problem, with my ATI HD 4870 X2 with Crysis 1 where the card would overheat and crash the system. The only difference is that my card came defective with my computer when I bought it... So the manufacturer (Alienware, big mistake :P) replaced it under warranty.

Also, you might want to backup your computer and maybe install Windows 7 SP1... It came out about a week before C2, and in the minimum requirements, under OS, it said "latest service pack" so it might be worth try...

My card is a Geforce 9600GT. Earlier, I was having this problem only with Crysis 2 but it soon started to occur with other games as well. And my suspicion about my video card going bust was finally confirmed when I called in a technician who checked my system concluding with the same result. So now, my video card has gone for a replacement which means gaming is simply out for me at least for the next one week.

Still, more than this, what's got me bugged is to whether was it simply a coincidence that my video card went awry at about the time I was around a week or two into playing Crysis 2 ??? Or did the game actually fry my video card ??? The only way to find out would be when I get back my replaced card. But if Crysis 2 was the culprit behind my card's demise, then that is troubling since it might as well happen again. Strangely enough, my card could tackle Crysis at high settings despite me playing it for about 4-6 hours a day (not continuously and not all days).

So, in my case, the video card was the culprit - it turned out it was bad. Hope this helps !!!

Return to Crysis
