Video Card Freezes

Post » Mon Jan 24, 2011 10:33 pm

Was wondering if anyone could help me, my video card keeps freezing when i play Fallout 3 & Starcraft 2.

I get up to certain points in the game and the game freezes, kickes me out to windows 7, it also does the same thing in Starcraft 2. I am was also running them in High Detail/ Ultra High. Sometimes it wouldnt freeze for like 2hrs and sometimes i get to a place and it freezes. There is no error code that comes with this crash. The specs on the computer are quit capable of running both.

Specs

Ati 5770 HD 1gig ram
Ddr 5 Ram
PCI Express
750 ATX Watts (Power Supply)
Intel Core I5 750 2.66ghz Quad Core

So you can see i can run it really smooth even on the highest settings. Can anyone help me figure out this problem. It`s really anoying.

What is DDR 5 Ram?? is your VGA specs with DDR 5?? or you are using 5 pieces of Memory ??
might be you could check your VGA or CPU temperatures.. maybe overheating.
and be sure your power supply cable are connected correctly to VGA, as this is usually caused by dropping voltages..

It's GDDR5, actually, and only used on video cards. In this game, there are at least three software elements that must work together to render graohical objects on the display. Problems with any of the three can destroy gaming pleasure easily. Video drivers are where problems creep in most easily, of course. Direct3D is the next-most problematic in terms of how many potential problems can arise there, and is easier to reinstall than the game is. The game has to be uninstalled before it can be reinstalled, of course, adding to the work involved. Factually, it's a more likely vector than Dx9 is (yes, Dx9, not Dx10 or Dx11).

Since the HD 5700 cards are MEDIUM cards, not High End cards, the fact that this game has low requirements may encourage someone to be overdoing things with such a card, which could very well overheat it and cause it to perform incorrectly. Game players should always have some thermal monitoring utility keeping track of temperatures for them.

I was having a similar problem as the OP but only with FALLOUT 3 after a reinstall of WinXP. I went through all the installations of the latest video drivers,Direct X ,codecs etc but kept getting random crashes which never happened before and i've been playing FALLOUT 3 since it first came out. Finally by accident i realised i had not updated my Windows Media Player to the latest version 11. Once i did this i was finally not getting anymore crashes and i've been able to enjoy FALLOUT 3 as i have in the past. I hope this will be the solution to your problem.

Forget it. The above didnt last. Its back to crashing. I really hope TES V is playable from the get go like every other game i have now that iD Software is in Zenimax's game arsenal.

Time to go play STALKER or DRAGON AGE at least they're still working and one of em is from way back 2006. Looks like its time to start looking for another hobby way things are going.

I use ATI Tray Tools for the purpose and I am very happy with it (Rivatuner for Geforce cards, or ATI Tools, without the "Tray" in the name). .

I'm currently in the support process for Fallout 3 on this issue and I'm basically being told by their software tech support that because FO3 was released before Windows 7 they don't support the game under that environment (though to their credit they're trying), whereas Fallout: New Vegas does have Win 7 support and is enhanced for multi-core computers and runs pretty much fine for me.

So I can't play a game from 2008 because of an operating system from 2009 I guess...is the logic here. Rather than say....taking the adjustments they made for the engine for FONV and applying them to FO3 in a patch thus making it both multi-core enhanced and Win 7 supported.

BTW the MS Compatibility site itself says that Fallout 3 is compatible with Win 7 64 Bit, Bethesda tech support says they weren't aware of that and to ignore it as erroneous data.
