Do video game characters think?

Post » Fri Oct 07, 2011 8:46 am

Like they all have objectives and they all want to do those objectives...So when you are about to kill them, do you think they get scared because they wont be able to complete those objectives? Sometimes ai seems to take on a life of its own and get smarter. Do you think skyrim's characters will be smart enough to actually think about their lives? If you are one of those people who don't believe that animals can think don't bother replying. If you think about it, it is impossible for us to exist. What if the video game characters are like us? :bonk:

You mean NPC's? They definitely won't evolve within the game. Their behavior is determined by the code written for them. They won't go skynet on us.

The AI can only think what we tell them to think, which isn't really thinking, just code.

Also, "If you are one of those people who don't believe that animals cant think don't bother replying.", those are two very different things. A computer coded AI and a real living animal? Nothing alike.

What if that's how we started. But our instincts are our code. Then we started operating outside of that code.

We aren't computers, as far as I know.

I have a feeling this is going to turn in to a religion vs. evolution thread.

You might want to make sure you took your medicine this morning.

There may be slight differences between infinitely complex genetic sequences and a few thousand lines of code created by humans.

That right there was going there and is against the rules. I edited it out because quoting it would just make a mess for the mods if they have to clean it up.

Long story short: Grumply, I would forget everything you know about biology and computers and then go relearn it all from a credible source.

The internet is not a credible source.

you're just closed minded. We don't understand anything about the universe. It takes wisdom to know that...but then there's people like you who think they know everything.

I really hope my NPC's don't become self aware.

Its all fun and games till I have to put down an NPC rebellion or dodge sparks they shoot at me....

"If you are one of those people who don't believe that animals cant think don't bother replying"

You meant "if you are one of those people who believe that animals cant think don't bother replying" ?

I had a dog once who was getting bullied by the older dogs at my grandmas house. They wouldn't let her drink out of the water bowl. Every time they caught her drinking from it they chased her away.

So when the other dogs were away she picked up an old margarine container and scooped it into the water dish then ran a short distance away with it and drank from that. I saw this happen myself and was shocked that a dog would use a piece of trash as a tool like that.
