Video game moments that made you cry

Post » Sat May 17, 2014 6:55 pm

There been lots of times when JRPGs giving me crying moments, although the last one was possibly Suikoden V back in 2006 (my favorite PS2 game). They don't make JRPGs as they used to  JRPGs are often accompanied by sad music too, which helps a lot to make an emotional death scene or whatever more powerful.

I can't really think of any western game that giving me tears at the moment though. The scene in the first Mass Effect when Sheppard step up from the ruins of the last boss battle was close, thanks to the strong and heroic music that was playing.

Oh yeah, sometimes video game nostalgia can give me tears too, like hearing some video game song from something I used to play 30 years ago. Nostalgia can be powerful stuff

Closest I ever came was in Knights of the Old Republic II, when you meet the Jedi in the rebuilt Enclave. The Jedi deride you as a life-svcking abomination and try to cut you off from the Force, a Sith Lord saves you, and a Sith Apprentice (at least for male players) comforts you and reassures you that the Jedi were wrong in their assessment of you. I really did not see that coming.

This gave me a little feels, though not close enough as to provoke tears.

Remembered how much feels inFAMOUS 2's evil ending gave me.
Spoiler
Both the good and evil endings just prove that you either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.
Put that in a spoiler tag because, well, it kind of does spoil the endings a little.

A real sad ending would of been if ...

Spoiler
...the Big Boss encounter hadn't happened. With everybody celebrating life's moments and Snake on his knees about to off himself. Put yourself in that situation where there is no thanks or appreciation for you risking your hide time and time again, and now you have no choice but to end it all early.

The graveyard scene actually made it a happy ending in my opinion. But I guess we can cry for happy endings too. :)

I agree Freddo, JRPGs have given me much more of an emotional Impact then MOST (MOST, not All) Western games...

IMO it may be because developers of JRPGs put more effort towards emotional, engaging plot-lines, while many western Devs put more toward Gameplay Mechanics and such....

COME ON. The song they play is from bloody SESAME street!!!

Oh, and all the MGS 5 trailers have turned me into a sobbing mess. OH and a forgot, Cortana's death in Halo 4 and Haytham Kenway's death in Assassin's creed 3 felt like a punch in the stomach.

I know that feeling. When I owned a Deamcast I used to spend hours listening to the http://youtu.be/Db8ziLL8H8Y music, heck I just looped the song forever on in that game---I eventually wore out the Soul Caliber disk. Fast forward to 10 years...after I got a Xbox 360 and learned that Soul Caliber was on Xbox live, it became my first 360 digital game. The warm fuzzies came back to me when I listened to that song again----BUUUUUUUT----We have a problem with the 360 version, the songs don't loop indefinitely like they did on the Dreamcast and some of the stuff that made SC great was left out (EDGE MASTER MODE) so the replay took a huge hit. It's still the same game but it's like Diet Coke---it's missing a few flavors that made the original great.

So much feels. No tears, but my jaw dropped and I felt very not happy about that.

Seeing

Spoiler
each Spartan die, mainly Emile and then Six, was rough. Really, really rough.

Mass Effect 3 for the Destroy ending or whatever it is,

Spoiler
the option to destroy machines and all. Seeing Joker frantically try to escape the shockwave was tough too, I yelled and yelled at my screen the entire time.

I'm a man, but I admit I did the same.

That is the first and only time I've cried when playing a video game. I felt awful seeing that.

I don't think I've ever cried to a video game. I've felt moved or saddened before, but never close to weeping over one.

I found the ending to be a bit too overdramatical for my tastes, but even if you weren't able to keep it dry, there's still the very final scene where

Spoiler
Tidus flies through space, past Braska and Auron, and low-fives Jecht. Kinda makes it feel like he's coming home.

They never should have retconned that in FFX-2.

Oh yeah, The Last of Us gives you a sledgehammer to the face right there, especially since you're completely not expecting it.

Suikoden V still makes me all melancholic when I hear its music. Beautiful game that was. Well, not beautiful in a graphics-sense

I don't cry over video games, but some powerful scenes:

The Walking Dead:

Spoiler
Kenny's death. All the other characters who died were memorable too, but none were like Kenny. He'd been there with you from the very beginning, gone through even worse hardships than anyone in the group, and still he went on. Sacrificing himself to protect that useless idiot Ben was a suitable exit for him, but still... Kenny's death was even more powerful than Lee's (even though you saw both of them coming).

The Last Remnant:

Spoiler
Emma's death. Even though her opponent was completely unbeatable (he even snatches her sword between two fingers at one point) and able to effortlessly hold her off, she still kept attacking, in a wonderfully choreographed scene until she was finally out of strength, and the Conqueror kills her without moving a single muscle in his face.

Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale. http://i.imgur.com/UeOQr.jpg.

Persona 3:

Spoiler
The ending, of course. As the protagonist falls asleep in Aigis' lap, the meaning of the subtle dialogue option, "Close your eyes", only hits home after a few seconds. The fact that nobody even remembers all the trials they've gone through together is also crushingly sad, since they all just go back to being ignorant high school students interested in being popular and getting good grades.

And

Spoiler
The http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3femcV7WotI. Everyone chooses to forget the doom of the world approaching and live out their last month in blissful ignorance until the world is destroyed.

Persona 4:

Spoiler
The http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCodLLVVVNQ. Almost impossible NOT to get except with a walkthrough, the bad ending is less dramatic than P3's, but still has terrible implications. The protagonist's niece dies and her uncle is left all alone. The entire group knows they've indicated the wrong man as guilty, leading to the innocent suspect's death, the mist still hangs over Inaba and will never lift, and the shadows will continue to murder. The credits music being the same as the True Ending's final dungeon makes it even more leaden.

What I liked very much about The Last of Us, by the way, apart from the entire game being awesome, was that temporary allies don't always follow you until they die horribly. With quite a few of the temporary group members, you just part ways when you reach your destination. It was very refreshing to see, since most games these days try to go for cheap drama by killing off allies, and The Last of Us, steered away from it often, making it far less predictable.

Never really cried over a game, but I've got some feels over them. The last chapter of MGS4 was very emotional to me the first time I played it.

Crisis Core's ending was also really sad. Even though I knew what would happen.

Spec Ops The Line made me speechless when I beat it. It was really sad game when you realize what's been really going on.

Knights of the Old Republic 2 was really the sadest game because of the lacking end. I didn't cry when I beat it. I got mad.

I feel like i am emotionally stunted or something. I can't remember actually crying at any point because of a video game. I think I may have teared up a couple times somewhere down the line. Lost Odyssey at many points through the Thousand Dreams mechanic, and FFX when Tidus turns and smiles and then disappears for another. DMC 1 when Nelo Angelo turns out to be Vergil. I played DMC 3 first. Noble 6 in Halo: Reach came close and so did Cortana losing her mind. Ezio Auditore, when he realizes his entire life has been wasted on a cause he will never be able to understand. AC 2-Revelations.

There is another one that is circling my memory but I cannot place it. It essentially boils down to a character, who after going through a metaphoric hell, turns right around and heads back in to save the day at the cost of their life. Pretty vague but I cannot remember who it is. It was selfless and no one would ever know about it. This is going to drive me [censored] bonkers.

I actually have cried over games quite a bit these days. I'm getting pretty emotional now for some reason. I'll just say that the Reverse Hills part of Shin Megami Tensei IV was the saddest recent thing I found in a game. Kids being dropped off at that place, advlts getting their brain svcked out. Thinking about it makes me sad. Oh, and when the advlts spoke, I felt sad.

I also felt extremely sad over the ending to Red Dead Redemption. Actually taught my mom just how much those stories in video games can grip at you and not let you go. That was when she found out what I was into was pretty similar to her love of movies, my stories just came from things that took over 40 hours to tell full stories in many cases.

I found the part with Ghetsis disowning N in Pokemon Black and White to be very sad. Pokemon games shouldn't be sad in the main series, but this was a sad moment that I would never expect in such a series.

This tear causing moment was actually just a moment of pure terror. I was playing Dead Space and got to a part where a loud, sharp grinding sound could be heard. If you've been to this part, you might already be aware that it is annoying. Well, for me it was the most painful gaming experience ever. I was nearly crying out of pain.

Just hearing Nate's theme from the Uncharted series gets me all melancholiac. Watching those emotional scenes, though. :(

Halo Reach in general.

Halo 4.

Spoiler
Cortana's death.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare ending (Before the whole 'plane ordeal') -{ And tbh, I dislike CoD in general}

Dynasty Warriors 7 had a lot of quite saddened moments in the cutscenes.

Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon had a moment in the game near the end. Also, the ending credits song brought good tears.

Killing spoiler in the Time Crash in Chrono Cross. You don't even hear a word of this guy until you get to him, and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fd7ggm04GFo as you start to understand just all the consequences that Chrono and company created by their time travelling in Trigger. Right in the middle of the square is one of the big symbols of Trigger broken and in disrepair. And then spoiler comes out, talks to you, and explains what happened here, what happened to you and your father, and why. This humble looking guy then gets into a battle with you(With that sad music from before still going) and ends up being one of the http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ThatOneBoss in the game.

The ending of Lufia 2 is absolutely heartrending but presents itself in a cheery optimistic slant. It makes the events even sadder.

Spoiler
You defeat the sinistrals. Doom island is stopped and will soon fall out of the sky. Maxim's wife selan dies from the last attack that has to be performed. As he's dying, Daos(The villain of the game) seperates Maxim and his dead wife from Artea, the only one left in the group that knows teleport. Artea and Guy teleport out promising to tell the world of Daos's defeat. Daos isn't done yet though. With his dying breath he directs the islands movements so that when it crashes it'll take out the city where Maxim and Selan's child is at. Erim(Another sinistral that had been fighting you) decides to give Maxim a chance to stop the island with her dying breath, warning him that it will likely kill him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqh04KrBWHk and you take control of Maxim one last time and start shattering control crystals with your own lifeforce. At the end of which, Maxim sees selans spirit floating in front of him, utters "Lets go home, lets go see our son", then collapses and dies too.

The rest of the ending is people continuing on as if Maxim and Selan are still alive and will be stopping by any moment as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COFDxNQyk24 plays. Even the party members who watched Selan die and escaped...

All of them except one. The first party member who joins Maxim(She isn't at the final battle), who also had a childhood crush on Maxim(He turns her down about halfway through the game and she leaves the party permanently). She starts crying and doesn't know why.

Lufia 1 is also sad, but not nearly on that level.

Seconding Cid's death/Celes attempted suicide in FF6.

Not gonna write another wall of text here, but Terranigma does FFX's story far better. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eC9iW3xLuRY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcPS2BQ9EHA still bring up tears to this day.
