Video games for a 5yo

Post » Mon Dec 14, 2015 11:48 am

Im looking to get my 5yo daughter a game or 2 for Christmas for the Xbox 360. Im looking at the Lego games. Probably Batman and star wars. Any other recommendations? She's into girly things but also likes things like I posted above.

The Lego games are likely a good choice. And I think the SpongeBob SquarePants game follows the same style.

I know there's a "Just Dance for Kids" game that my friend's daughter likes. It also lets kids burn off lots of energy.

The Lego Dimensions game might be a good choice, you'll be doing a lot of building characters, vehicles and getting up and down to move the figures on the base so there's some physical activity there as well :) .

Thanks for the recommendations guys. While I've got a thread like this going, which would you guys recommend getting as a gift for her: a Innotab or a Nintendo DS?

If you go DS, know that Nintendo has posted a warning about the 3D function on the 3DS and how it can cause vision damage for children 6 and under.

Fear not, however, as there is the more child-friendly 2DS ready to go for kids her age. But parental settings can likewise disable the 3DS function on your average, vanilla 3DS if you're so inclined.

Edit: And just as an additional note, the 2DS does not flip close. It's simply dual screens on a pad. I know how kids can be with their "toys" and things can get scratched easily and tossed around. I recommend investing in screen covers for any electronics and perhaps even those nerf cover cases if you can get your hands on one. It could be a lifesaver later!

My 4 year old son and I play a lot of the Lego games. Batman was a better game than Star Wars I thought - the games really hit their stride around Lego Batman 2 - the ones before that were still kind of figuring out their gameplay a bit. Lego Marvel was really good too.

Beyond that there's not a lot we play on those systems. He has a Leap TV that doesn't really get a lot of use - none of their games hold his interest like the Lego games (we have Lego Batman 3 on XBox One and we still go back to "old Lego Batman" on our PS3 even though we've long since got 100% on it.)

Plus they're designed for two players so we can game together. This Christmas we picked up Lego Dimensions, since that's probably our best bang for the buck - we'll likely be playing that for a good long time.

Baldur's Gate? You mean the old infinite engine game? That game is too advanced for a 5 year old.

Lol, I would probably let her watch me play it, but being she's just learning how to read it might be a bit beyond her.

I think me and the wife have decided to get her a 3DS. Probably get her Mario kart bundled with it and Super Smash Bros too. Any other ideas?

Why waste a modern console on a young child? They would have much more fun with Sonic games on Sega Genesis or Mario games on NES. They're easy to pick up on since they have simple controls.

I actually still have my childhood Sega Genesis and a box of games. I also have a 360 game that has a bunch of the old Sega games on it. We've played that a good bit. She actually picks up well on controls as I actually have her playing Soul Caliber IV and I actually have to try now :P

The XBLA game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKL6-0Jg3MI which is a very charming little puzzle game. Oh, and there's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVvpkNMnWcs and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vA7JgwWJrBA too. And https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRFX3lMb4Kg too, I suppose.

My five year old (who is on the autism spectrum) loves Minecraft on creative/peaceful or whatever it's called, Lego Batman and the Lego Movie game ("I've got some new pants!") and Cars 2. He particularly loves getting me to spend hours building large detailed buildings for him in Minecraft and then pouring buckets of lava over them. I tried him on Fable 2 but it was a bit much getting the controls through to him, though he did love just wandering around in it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIBApCwG2Xs. It has a very bright fairy tale-esque world that she would definitely find appealing, and you can play it alongside her. Though concerning its difficulty level, I have a feeling a young child would either have some trouble with it...or would have an easier time than most advlts. :P

Scribblenauts? That's the first game that came to mind other than the lego games.

Edit: Don't know if it's on console though.

Really really old game but... Super Mario World it was the first game I ever played around that age. It can provide ages of entertainment, and it's very much E rated, also having nothing that would be too scary for a 5 year old.

If we get her a ds I was looking at New Super Mario Bros 2. Its a side scoller like the old ones but has some neat stuff in it too.

Right now im having a really tuff time deciding between a Innotab or a 3DS.

I just wanted to update.

We baught her a 2ds that comes with a free download voucher for Mario Kart 7. We also got her Super Smash Bros because she loves the demo at the store we go to. Considered getting Scribblenaughts but there looked to be a bit of reading involved and I didnt want that to hinder her from having fun. Next year she should have a better grasp of reading so its on my list... along with pokemon. Speaking of I need to introduce her to that anime so she will understand the game.

Grand theft auto 5, or the last of us. Both solid choices.

This might be weird, but maybe ease her into gaming with something not as sophisticated as an xbox. Maybe an SNES?

Just read your most recent post. The 2DS is a good choice. I don't know what i was thinking by saying SNES... lol

Retron 5 would have been a better choice over the snes.

Probably more durable though
