Vidoe Crashes observations

Post » Sun Oct 17, 2010 1:45 am

I'm seeing a pattern to the video crashes I experience that I wanted to discuss. I can play for many hours without this problem occuring while exploring or fighting, unlike others V.A.T.S. usually doesn't cause a problem for me either. If I do a lot of opening and closing of the item trading screens (opening containers, trading with party members, merchents etc, in a short period of time I will almost always get a video crash, wether I'm playing for 5 minutes or 5 hours.

I almost always never get a complete crash, rather a video crash of the game to a black screen in a full sized window. I can usualy save the game in this state pressing f5 and alt-tab to desktop closing the game with task manager and see a message in the task bar on my desktop saying my vidoe card crashed and recovered.

I am posting to sort out the details of this problem and to see if there are any suggestions short of a game patch or new vidoe drivers ( I have the most recent vidoe drivers already)?

Since I am at work I dont have a direct X diag file to post; however I built my system and I can post some of the important stats from memory.

OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 64
MB: Gigabyte GA-X48-DQ6 (intel X48 chipset Intel ICH10 bridge)
CPU: Intel Quad core 2 Duo Q9650 @ 3.6Ghz (3.0 Ghz is the default chip speed)
Mem: 8GB DDR2 @ 1066Mhz
Video: EVGA Nvida 285 GTX (1GB Mem), Drivers ver. 260.99
Onboard: Realtek HD Audio Updated the drivers about a month ago from the Gigabyte site

When I am home I can provide more system info if needed.

P.S. While playing out in the world I do get some stuttering and jerky motion at times but generaly no crashes.

I played another day after this post for about 8 hours and for me the problem I still mostly the crash saying my "vidoe driver stopped responding and recoverd". More importantly for me frequently accessing the various game interface screens ina short time seem to cause the this problem almost all the time. Perhaps others can try to notice if accesing game interfaces frequently in a short time leads to crashes for them too?
