View lights at a greater distance

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 12:26 am

Greetings.

How can I increase the view distance of lights. Currently the effect is unrealistic you have to be very close the the light before it "activates". Any thoughts or ideas on how the make the lights (not mesh) visible at a greater distance would be very helpful! Thanks!

Increase these two values in your ..MyGames\Oblivion\Oblivion.ini:

fLightLOD2=1000000.0000
fLightLOD1=999000.0000

I don't remember what the default values are, those are just the ones I use. I like them. It will have a negative performance impact, so you might want to try lower or higher values until you find ones that work for you.

As far as I'm aware, extending those values will only have an affect for as far as the game can load cell data. That's typically two cells around you in any direction, or roughly 12,000 units. Beyond that, you're dealing with LOD, which has no active light data to process.

With the default settings, I could see light sources before I can see their lights in some cases, and that's irksome. For example, a single light at the end of a straight, fogless cave tunnel couldn't be seen until I was a few tileset pieces away from it, and I should have been able to see that light from much further away. Or a guard with a torch at the other end of the Market District - I could see the guard, but not the torch, until the guard was much closer. With these settings, I can see the lights when it makes sense to see them.

I think what Arthmoor is trying to say is that more than 12000 doesn't make sense since the loaded area in front of you isn't that large. It's a bit more than 20000 actually in the worst case scenario, but usually you can't see more than 12000 units ahead. Personally I have my light settings set to 2750/3000 (instead of default 1000/1500). That's enough for me.

Also, wasn't there a bug that could happen if you set your light settings above ~4000? I think I read that somewhere. Not sure though.

:shrug: I'm still pretty newb about that spectrum of stuff. I just trustingly followed some instructions in some readme or another and *presto* I could see lights at reasonable distances. :rofl:

I haven't seen any ill effects from it, other than the trivial performance impact one would expect from having more lights.
