Viewable account names are just wrong

Post » Fri Mar 14, 2014 9:46 am

I do not want my account information viewable to anyone. Doesn't anyone see the glaring problems. That is half of your login just given away. My bank would burn in flames overnight if they did that crap. If you want to cut down on throwaway accounts do it some other way, not by shredding my privacy. This is not acceptable. It's for ease of identifying guildies? what? If you cant remember who jimbo's alts are write them down or put them on your guild page. This is just another example of the public slowly being cooked like "the frog" Don't stand for it people! It will just get worse and worse.

There either needs to be an option for it to be disabled or just throw that idea away.

Hey, your Forum login name is Skyshade...

Its not uncommon for login names to be one in the same with display names. If you have a good password and they employ IP login validation like Guild Wars does, then its fine. The new trend is to restrict access from a new location without your approval first.

I was a little weirded out by it at first. Mainly because I used my full name as my account name, as I usually do in order to not forget it; thinking it was nothing more than a way to access my account. When I found out it was displayed in-game I quickly contacted ZeniMax in order to have it changed. To their credit they changed it for me within the hour, so no harm done.

I'm not sure about account security though; just have a super complex password I guess?

Actually, what you see is the display name in here. What you telling me tho is your login name is Echonite.

I think what Echonite said is true;

I believe if you try to access your account from another location you're sent an e-mail with an authentication code, which you need to enter in order to play.

Could you then direct me where I can change my display name on these forums? Cus I never got that memo.

Login names are only part of the equation, and while yes it is better to not display your login name as your display name, the login name doesn't give much away. If your password is strong enough, then theres not much to worry about.

Also, i saw Starsfan mention using email as the login name, but since retracted that, I just wanted to say that that is also a bad idea as that email is probably the one you use for your password recovery, no? XD

I do hope they use IP validation like what Guild Wars does.

Your account has about as much a chance of getting hacked as I do of becoming Emperor.

Slim to none.

Well of course you stand no chance with an attitude like that. I will support your claim!

Security is not only related to hacking. It is also related to data mining. Lots of people use the same login for lots of other things and in times, build up a profile for this 'username' and can be traced then. Some people also use their real name as login name and increased the chance on identifying the real person.

That sort of thing is borderline conspiracy. Obviously data mining is going on. Nothing we do will effectively hinder that. You might think you are making it harder for whoever is doing the mining, but honestly, you aren't.

Plus, the scope of this thread is about hacking security.

If you get a keylogger, it doesn't matter what your account name is.

If you don't get a keylogger, it doesn't matter what your account name is.

A hacker knowing your account name can do nothing just with it.

ESO uses IP validation. Try to log into the game. If it hasn't verified your IP already, it will ask you to do so.

There is no reason to show unnecessary information which makes data mining easier than it needed to be.

If people have used their real name then people could stalk them online. That's a pretty serious security flaw.

Anyone who's that overly paranoid about online "stalkers" would already be in full-incognito mode, so you're only preaching to the choir.

But the information trying to be hidden is easily obtainable and linked to these "profiles". Seriously, data mining is out of our hands and nothing we do will hinder it enough to matter. Least of all trying to hide our login names on a videogame.
