Virtual PC and similar

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2009 5:22 am

I'm wondering if anyone has attempted running Arena, Daggerfall, Battlespire or Redguard on a virtual PC application, like MS Virtual PC '07or Vmware? And what kind of results that can be expected.

I've barely tried Redguard in VPC running Windows 98, and because of the graphic card emulation or something I couldn't get it to without stuttering and lag, Daggerfall unfortunately had the processor speed bug or whatever I should call it, and I could unfortunately not find any way to turn the speed down a bit, however I could get Terminator Future Shock to run quite well in it, and as far as I know they use the same engine.
So if anybody here knows of a way to emulate the processor or a graphic card any better in VPC, or any other similar application, I would be very grateful.

If you haven't seen it yet, http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Running_under_Windows might have some information that can help you. Haven't tried anything besides DOSBox yet, so I'd like to hear more from you if you can manage to get good results. I wonder if Wine can run any of them, or if they will run in FreeDOS or MSDOS on a virtual pc?

Heh, Redguard works, but the lag is unbearable, Daggerfall has the processor bug, and Arena and Battlespire doesn't even start. So the results does not look good so far. Daggerfall runs a lot better in Dosbox, and since it works fine there I'm probably not going to screw around with that anymore, and the same goes with Arena. However the guide for Redguard doesn't work in Vista, at least from what I've seen, while Battlespire crashes and runs slowly despite patching and stuff.
I'll see if I can manage to get MSDOS running in VPC.
Don't know about Wine though, haven't really tried it that much, and the only thing I've get running there is Morrowind, so I don't know. I read somewhere that either it or Cedega is going to try to do something to better the support for DOS applications, but I dunno...

I didn't get Redguard to work in Vista either, however, if you haven't heard of it already I can really recommend http://www.glidos.net/. You have to pay a small sum and you don't get any ingame music, which they're hopefully working on,, but other than that it works flawlessly.

Hm, well, I would gladly pay $10 to be able to play Redguard, so I might look into that :)

I found out that VPC does not support emulation of any other graphics card, and probably won't in the near future, so that is a kick in the balls. But you can still play older games that don't require as much as Redguard. I also still haven't found out why Arena or Battlespire won't work, but I'm going to try the CD version of Arena and see if I can get it running that way. If that doesn't work I'm going to dig up a Win95 CD, and see if that works any better.

UPDATE:
Well, I found out that 95 is not officially supported in VPC, tried it anyway, but couldn't get it running. Probably something with the drivers, but I can't figure it out.
I'm also having problems setting up the CD-rom driver in 98 DOS mode, sometimes it works, other times it don't, so I'm a bit annoyed at that, even more so, because that means I won't be able to try the CD version of Arena, as I couldn't get it running inside Windows. But I'm going to keep trying, I guess it's something that doesn't work as supposed to in autoexec.bat.

Dude, don't use Glidos. You can use dgVoodoo for free.

I've tried that a multitude of times, with no success :/
I have no idea of why it won't work, might have something do with Vista, or some interfering applications.

I've played around a bit more with VPC, and concluded that I can't get anything Elder Scrolls related properly. Hopefully there exist some other application, with similar functions, but intended for games. I've heard of a few, but never found them, but if I ever do find them, and manage to get it running properly I'll remember sure to post it in this section of the forum,

EDIT:
I got a bit pissy today, because of this, and I really want to play Redguard and Battlespire. I tried Battlespire again, at first I had the same result, but then I started fiddling around with the settings a bit more than I've ever done before, and actually managed to get it running  but the problem is that it's just on the center of the screen in a small area, while everything around is just black. It's playable, but damn small.
I also managed to get Redguard running in the Glidos trial, though I had to use something called VDos32, but at least it worked.

EDIT2/3:
@CrossL:
When I think about it, I haven't tried installing Redguard since before I upgraded my computer, so I might get it running with that now

Didn't work :meh:

EDIT4:
Found a Dosbox CVS build, that could run Battlespire properly. I'z happy! :trophy:
