Virtual pc/95

Post » Mon Jan 18, 2010 3:44 am

I am trying to run daggerfall on my xp machine, through a virtual pc install of win95.
It installed fine, and everything seemed ok, apart from an occasional out of place bit of sound, but about 5 minutes in, it started freezing quite often.
I have a feeling that this is either something to do with my setup of the sound, or with my processor speed (because I also find it hard to walk backwards, which is apparently a symptom of new processors).

I was thinking of using a cpu slowdown utility, and I dl'ed one, but my question is, will I run it in the vpc win95, or in my real install of xp?
Or am I approaching this from the completely wrong angle?

Why not use DosBox? TBH you're fighting a losing battle trying to get Daggerfall running perfectly on Virtual pc when you could easily run it on DosBox, or an older pc if you can find one. Dosbox was designed from the ground up to run every DOS game available whatever the cpu speed, and support all the sound cards that were available at the time, you'll never get perfect sound out of Virtual pc in DOS games that are looking for an ISA card.
I haven't used a slowdown app in Virtual pc so I'm not sure of the best way to run it, I would have thought running it through VPC would be the best way.

BTW

DosBox will be a lot less trouble ;)

I tried it under Virtual PC, but could unfortunately not get it to run properly, as the CPU speed problem is still present in it, so I agree with Hoot, Dosbox is the way to go.

I tried dosbox, but the colour keeps [censored] up, and it crashes every two seconds.
