Vista?

Post » Tue Sep 29, 2009 11:00 am

I've played Morrowind on my Xbox for quite a while, and I'm considering getting the GOTY over Steam. One question: Does Morrowind play well with Vista? Googled this and didn't find conclusive results.

I'm running on win7 and it works well. You just have to make sure to install MW into an alternate directory, not Program Files.

Cool. How is that done, exactly? I'm not tech-savvy... :nope:

When you run the install, It should give the option of where to install. Choose a different folder, i.e. a folder on your desktop.

I have played on vista for 3 years now. Never experienced any problems. Especially not with the program file location. That has to be a win 7 problem.

There's something about the Steam version that makes the Program files/Steam path work OK. I could not get MW to work (CD version, Win7) in Program files(86) but no problem with the default Steam install.

no. UAC prevents modding unless you disable it or take complete ownership of the files. Its just easier to install into a separate location

You can install Morrowind in program files, you just have to set the permissions on the folder correctly. Once you've done that it will work fine, even with UAC.

It's easier for most people to just install elsewhere though, which sidesteps the problem.

You cannot change the Install path with the CD either.
Install as normal, then physically move your Morrowind folder to a new location.

why is installing MW into program files bad?

does installing it elsewhere avoid having to copy/paste the expansion data files?

Vista and Win7 doesn't let you have control over anything in Program Files, unless you turn off UAC or set-up all the correct permissions.
Changing the location is the quickest method to avoid these problems.

Yes.

Yes it does has something to do with Steam, because it depends where you install Steam client and if you install Steam client on the default path then you have trouble with Morrowind. :user:
I always install Steam client on the different partition and not on C:\ problem solved. :D

If you run the setup.exe as admin you won't have to copy anything either ;)
