Vivec inspired by dr. Manhattan?

!!!POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR THE WATCHMEN MOVIE!!!

Last night mister Harke the Apostle and I went to see the new excellent superhero movie, The Watchmen.
One of the characters from the movie, Dr. Manhattan, is a mortal who became semi-divine, has blue skin and can see the future and the past and the present at the same time*, like Vivec.

In the movie he teleports to Mars and puts a and awesome clockwork machine together (he can change every substance with his mind) which looks suspiciously like Sotha Sil's Clockwork city.

To top it all off Dr. Manhattan also has six with his girlfriend while he is working elsewhere at the same time.** (More or less like Vivec and Molag Bal).

So people, what do you think; might Morrowind be influenced by The Watchmen?

*). Well whatever, you get the idea.
**). Quantum mechanics bladiblah. He can be at several places at the same time. There were two of him in bed with his girlfriend when she found out he was working for the government while caressing her.

Morrowind was likely simultaneously influenced by a great many diverse things the Devs had read or watched over the years. Parts of it were inspired by things as diverse as Poke'mon, Egyptian culture and pagan mythology of all types. It's entirely possible the graphic novel the Watchmen contributed to it as well.

edit: I mean there's even a Redoran Watchman helm in the game and the Ordinators' attitude reminds me of Rorscach.

I think that Dunmer culture is similar to Gaelic culture, but that's for another thread...

No, a thousand times over. Dr.Manhatten just has alot of sterotypical god-like powers, it's purely coincidence that another fictional character happens to share some of the same sterotypical god-like powers.

Actually, I think it would be better to compare Dr. Manhattan (qua graphic novel) to Sotha Sil. Not a great match, but better than Vivec.

And I do mean it when I say "graphic novel," because they changed a few things for the movie that undermine the comparison (though some of it is still there).

A single Easter egg meant as a joke does not qualify as an influence in my book.

Just sayin'.

But "300" came after "Morrowind" thou.
I dont know if the story is older, except for the fact that it very much seems to be from the Past times.

I read a Smurf comic, and I think Dr. Manhattan (and therefore Vivec) is inspired by Papa Smurf. Discuss.

It would be quite interesting if Vivec and the Papa Smurf had any similarities except being the "Leaders/Wise men" of their people.

But Vivec ain't so Blue... lulz.

No it didn't! 300, the movie, is based on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/300_(comics) that came out before Morrowind.

One of the eight monsters Vivec fathers in 36 Lessons seems to be at least somewhat influenced by it as well.

The Smurfs are blue, live in mushroom houses (Telvanni), have konky six (Buoyant Armigers). Live next to a dam that is in danger of exploding just about every episode (Ghostfence). Eat smurfberries (cromberries (Conan ?)) or smilax (bittergreen) and use creatures that would be too small in our humanoid universe to use as mounts. They also have exploding packages (Tribunal) and build camp fires.

Dr. Manhattan (in the movie) does none of that, so the argument that the smurfs influence dr. Manhattan before they inflenced the Dunmer directly, probably falls flat on its face.

 Jeez, umm. I would say that 300, Watchmen, and Smurfs, would realistically, and most likely have almost no influence what so ever to Vivec. For real? I love discussing silly things as they make the world spin but no. There probably was not. And if so it would be very diminuative concepts.

A more feasable idea would be the previous suggestion to other ancient, or present cultures concept of a God manifested as a man. Things that are very stereotypical. Like Clairvoyancy, control over matter, polytheistic appearance, being super hot. All very generic things could be influenced be recent pop culture like things... 300, Watchmen, and Smurfs, a million others... But it is much more reasonable that Vivec stems from mythology, religion, Deathklok  , Ancient cultures, fairytales and legends. But that's not where I would put my money. :nope:

Bump for Watchmen being one hell of a movie though! :foodndrink:

When 300 came out, there was a bunch of threads and discussion over Xerxes/Vivec. Now with this movie, (which rocks by the way) it with Dr Manhattan. Personally I saw no comparison, save that the transcendence sounded vitually identical, to look at the summatiion of ones own life and feel disconnected. Manhattan's and Vivec's laments over being God-Like beings and having no interest in the world anymore, despite the fact that the world insists that it is important. These were similar, if not identical in certain aspects.

But Vivec and Manhattan in Personality are both worlds apart in some aspects, and alike in others.

I'll leave it at that they could understand the way the other feels.

Dr. Manhatan Distanced himself from humanity because he didn't feel like he was apart of it anymore, got turned godlike by acident and is glowing blue (sorry just wanted to add one more thing in it has nothing to do with the argument.

Vivic on the other hand, does do things for his people...in fact he lost power for using his god powers for the good, and he also got he god powers on purpose.

I really can't see Dr. Manhatan directly influencing Vivic.

You have to admit there may be some visual similarities however - but these are just the generic god powers discussed before. There is one panel in the comic in particular where Doctor Manhattan becomes a towering Giant in Vietnam that reminds me of Vehk's giant form. And there's the whole existing inside and outside of time and physical space, etc.

Personality wise they're very different though.

Whether Vivec was inspired by dr. Manhattan or not, the "existing outside of time"-biz doesn't stem directly from any religion I've heard of. I'm sure it went through popular culture first.

Then again, Vivec might be inspired by the purportedly monotheistic religion from the culture where he got his name from. No cowgirls, though.

Waitwaitwaitaminute!

So you're saying that the same guy who wrote about serpents eating each other in an infinite ouroboros-like fashion, the nature of god and time, came up with several racial conceptions of god, and wrote his own thirty-six sermon long bible, actually didn't know about all those things until he ripped off a popular graphic novel to create the living-warrior-poet-god-king who philosophized everything mentioned before together?

I must say, that sounds extremely reasonable.
