Voice interaction

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 11:18 pm

I searched and couldn't find anything quite like I am speaking of, so let me know what you think.

In future TES games, do you think it would be possible to have full voice interaction with the NPCs in the game world?

For instance you walk near a guard and without activating him, a list of topics appears in the bottom corner with key words highlighted.

Directions
Report a crime
Nothing

Then you say something in your mic to the effect of "I was wondering if you could provide me with directions"

Then another list of topics about locations would appear as the guard exclaimed "Certainly! what would you like to know?"

Think about the possibilities and immersion that would come from this. Of course it would require a lot of voice-acting and the standard method of initiating conversations would have to remain an option, but wouldn't it be awesome to have discussions about mudcrabs with pirates, where to look for certain ingredients with foresters, and standard gossip of the day with people in towns??!?

I long for the day we step on a holodeck, so any steps (babysteps or not) towards that level of immersion I am all for. People are gonna call me out on this, but I like that Nintendo realized motion control was gonna bring in the masses, and Microsoft and Sony are at least getting on the bandwagon... I like the idea of Kinect because it is both voice and visual immersion oriented. If you saw last year's E3 where when it was Natal they showed "Milo" where the player interacted more realistically with the NPC on screen with both voice and visual queues, it was amazing.

Might be a little weird for people controlling characters of the opposite six though.

Well if you made a character of the opposite six, you already committed to playing the game in that "role" hence the "r" in "rpg"... that pretty much means that you are bound to doing what it takes to navigate that game in that role. If that makes you feel uncomfortable, the great thing about TES is that you are bound only to your choices, and gender is one of the first.

I doubt that they would add those erm... features to the game.

I can already see the problems......

"Guard! Where can I find the lord of bravil? says player in mic

"YOU ADMIT TO KILLING THE STORE CLERK?! STOP CRIMINAL!!" says Gaurd

"Wait? What? All I asked is where the lord of bravil is!"

"Get him men, he is resisting"

"This is Bul......."

Okay, well since I just used my iPhone to text to speech the same thing that my Windows 7 PC also Speech Recognition-ed into Word whilst my Rosetta Stone heard the intonation and my [INSERT SPEECH RECOGNITION SOFTWARE] just heard...

Point being, we are at a point where even the most rudimentary software can accurately reflect speech to text.

In fact, the last sentence, as well as this one was used by enabling my Speech Recognition software that was included with my OS. I haven't typed a thing. Now I am going to click on "Add Reply" without using my mouse and by asking the software to use Mouse Grid...

Alright fine, its just that I have my experiences with Speech Recognition technology and there werent inspiring to say the least.
But I suppose technology catches up on things so I should be more open minded about it.
Did really go out of your way just to prove me wrong? wow

Only because it is after midnight where I am, and there is very little else that is entertaining on a Thursday night (Friday morning?) Not really out of my way, just fun in general!

Does speech recognition work if you're hyperactive and prone to drastic voice shifts based on health and hydration? If not, then I'm against it. My voice can shift about an octave at times :x

I see no way how this would enrich the gaming experience beyond the point of a slightly more realistic ineraction system, maybe one day when all of my games will be motion/voice controlled simulations, until then I want to feel like im playing a video game

It might work, as xbox 360 has voice recognition on Kinect and ps3 has one too on Playstation Move (or does it? I don't know, i'm not a ps3 fan or something like that).

Don't give them any ideas... I don't want to play my next game by shouting at the screen:

Me: Swing! Swing! Swing! Turn Left 45 Degrees! Move Forward, Max Speed! Drink Health Potion!

Although that would be super awesome for a tactical control game (you are a captain of some kind issuing orders to your crew).

M'iaq, I'm sorry I killed you in Oblivion. But when a see a Khajiit running through the woods in nothing but a robe, I shoot the bastard. That's my policy

On a more serious note... voice interaction I think would be a nice feature, but is one of those things that would have to be optional. Not everyone would want it, as already shown by the small sample of players in this thread.

Something similar I've wondered about is actual text-based conversations... you get these 'robots' on the internet that you can type things into and they reply in text. (Don't call me sad, it's not like I talk to them regularly, I just know they exist :P) Here's http://alice.pandorabots.com/, for anyone who hasn't come actross them. I'm just thinking it wouldn't be a massive step to take one and use it to allow the PC to have real conversations with the NPC's.

I'm not necessarily saying Bethesda should or will implement this (in fact I'm fairly certain they won't, and unsure of whether it would really be an improvement), just something which might prove quite interesting.

I've had problems before with not catching a word or two in a fully-voiced game (not to mention a current problem with another game, where the speech is garbled), and not being able to do the quest as a result. Designing a game where you'd have that issue in both directions would be a pain to play, in my opinion. Besides, having to talk as the character would could elicit a few odd reations from other people in the building. It would be a no-buy for me.

Just as useless as playing in 3D. Doable with current technology (such as speech recognition), but seems pointless (to me, atleast).

Sounds pretty gimicky to me. Conceptually a pretty good idea, but really whats the point? If the dialouge options are fixed anyway, why hook up a mic just to feel like your talking to someone?

M'aiq, I wish you had a stick made of fishies to give me. Sadly, you do not.

But back on topic, I think it would be nice as an option, but I wouldn't want it to be necessary (via Kinect or the PS3 camera or what have you). I probably wouldn't use it, but I could see many users having fun with it.

Would be both annoying and troublesome for us that are not from north-america, Great Britain, NZ or Australia since we speak a diffrent language. Not to mention dialects, pronouncing etc.. would be impossible almost since pronunciation can sound very diffrent.

I prefer it stays as it is.

Not a bad dream for any Bethesda game. But if they did do that to TES V, how much further do you think that would push the realease date? The tests, checking and re-checking of all the things needed to make that possible would make it hard to actually have that come to fruition.

It would be nice. But the Devs would probably see that as too much trouble just to make a few people happy. Maybe after TES V they may think about it.

I would hate to have to talk to the screen. It's bad enough trying to mic to other players in some games. Just let me click on my response please.
