Voice Mod Please!

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 12:34 am

I am totally in love with how Bethesda is going to embrace modding for Skyrim (PC version, at least), and as I was watching one of the development trailers, it hit me:

How awesome would it be to cast spells using voice commands?

Forget about hitting hotkeys, mousing over little icons, or being limited to only a couple shortcut spells... just shout the dang thing! From the trailer, it sounds like the Shouts are in a language of their own, which only adds to the greatness/fun factor! Who needs something as bland as "fireball," "lightning bolt," or (may step on some toes here) "magic missile"?

Sure, a voice command mod would be, say, inconvenient or maybe a little embarrassing in public, but you've gotta admit, someone shouting a made-up language in the middle of a coffee shop would be funny as heck.

Awkwardness aside, I'm sure a voice command mod would add not only to more involved gameplay, but it would also enrich the world of the game. To those who love RPGs for the fact that they can lose themselves in the rich world, a voice command mod would draw them in like a tractor beam snagging the Millennium Falcon.

1.Who would be playing Skyrim in public?
2. Tom Clancy's endwar thought this would be a great idea and look how that turned out...
So no I hate this idea, I'm sorry but no game has got it right so far, if it could recognise everyone's voice, fine. But that just ain't happenin :P

Think it would be a waste of time and a pretty weird and big annoyance in real life. Things like this is also often buggy, at least I've heard.

I don't think it would funny as heck in real life if you shout weird words in a coffee shop. More like embarrassing and weird.

Hah, that would be pretty cool. Add your own voice to your character, or make dragons sound like Christopher Walken... the possibilities are endless!

Well Oblivion has
Dragon Tongue Voice Recognition

But voice recognition still experimental feature I don't think such mod will work well, still thats interesting idea for modding.

About as awesome as having a root canol without anaesthetic, and after an hour or so of intense play with a pure wizard, possibly every bit as painful.

Best anology, possible, I would be open to that idea of recording your own voice for your character though :)

Personally, the shout they demonstrated in the official trailer sounds anti-climactic. Shouts should be much more epic than your character just yelling and having a magical effect on top of it. As a producer and sound designer myself, I have a ton of ideas in terms of how they can be done much better, and have more of an epic character to them. Maybe I'll work on a mod that changes them once the game comes out and I familiarize myself with the Creation Kit.

You should be able to say whatever you want there is or was a poll that did that most people voted no but i said yes in Pittsburg we have a robot where you type a question in and it will answer it like it was talking to you that would be so cool to type what you want. but saying it might be a bad thing just look at phones you say "call phil" and it says did you say Bob like wtf thats a bad idea

1. Chatbots are completely different from what you're suggesting.

2. My phone gets those voice commands wrong half the time, ergo I never use them anymore.

No thanks. Yelling while playing a game isn't anything that sounds even remotely fun to me.

Yelling/shouting in public, whether in a made up language or not, will usually get you thrown out of a cafe/shop/restaurant and the police called for disturbing the peace and being a public nuisance.

Really, phenomenally, not awesome.

But, then, I'm the kind of person who seems the Kinect promo video ("look! a crowd of people waving their arms around like idiots!") or DDR arcade games, and think.... "wow, I'd have to be incredibly drunk to humiliate myself like that! Good thing I don't drink!"

So, uh.... nope, not my thing. Sorry. :)

It sounds like it be as much fun as using those voice activated menus you get when you call your cable company. You know, those ones that go something like this:

If you are having an emergency, say "Emergency."

"Emergency"

I'm sorry, could you please repeat that?

"Emergency"

I'm sorry, could you please repeat that?

"Emergencyemergencyemergencyemergency"

I'm sorry, could you please repeat that."

"EMERGENCY"

"You said "emergency." If that is correct, say "Yes." If not, then say "No."
