No Voice Options for Player Characters

Post » Fri Sep 23, 2011 11:09 pm

I wasn't expecting this to be in the game, but I heard a few people complaining and saying that the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwWtqfpb3LA&t=1m4s for what they'd pictured for their ideal Nord to be, so, I asked last night.

I tweeted Pete, and he says that there aren't any options for voice. What you see (hear) is what you get when it comes to your player character's voice.

Thoughts?

Personally, I didn't really care that the voice wasn't super-deep and all, the only thing that I thought about was how it won't fit more elderly characters, but even then you can just use your imagination. :)

Wouldn't mind if there was a simple pitch change...

Yea, some games have this but I RP my characters voice in my head and strangley that changes sometimes :whistling: so if a fixed voice I pick in the beginning of the game is used I may get tired of it really quick.

Oh, really? I wonder if it'll be the same actor or not. :D

Thanks for letting me (us) know.

This is exactly why it's better for the player-character to be completely voiceless. They're never going to please everyone with one voice, or even a small handful of voices.... just as they're never going to please everyone with one default character appearance, or one default character personality / backstory. These things are much better left to the player's own imagination.

I don't want my character's personality being dictated by some random voice actor.

Yep. This is one change we could have done without.

What keeps coming to mind is Dragon Age and how I couldn't RP because every time I clicked anything my character would shout something random... I couldn't really have a personality of my own with a person yelling profanities at me because I liked that voice for them. :(

I also found it impossible to RP as a female elf in Oblivion who was under the age of 45, if I ever got hit, it was just "BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUGH". It really only fit Dunmer women, and even then not all of them.

Yeah, Pete confirmed they're just placeholders and the final Nord voice sounds really cool.

Does the players character say a lot in the game? Do you hear the actual questions and reply's you pick in a conversation or is it just really the shouts you hear?

I think it's just shouts and grunts and yells, no actual words aside from the shouts, I'd assume.

It's okay, I'm that kind of a nerd too, sometimes. How else would I know I could do the Oblivion Khajiit/Argonian voice?

As long as you don't sound like a complete [censored] like on Fallout New Vegas and no matter what race you pick you sound exactly the same.
I personally thought the male nord voice is perfect... not many people even vikings have voices as deep as people like for some reason..

It has to do with secondary sixual characteristics and all that.

There's also psychological links to things, including an article I read in which they tested women's reactions and memory linked to voices.

Women rated deeper voices more attractive and they had better recall of what was said, compared to other voices.

So, y'know, whatever. People just being obsessed about being as attractive as possible, nothing new. Admittedly, however, a thu'um would sound really cool in a deep voice, just kinda for that extra "boom".

Worst. Voice acting. Ever. That was the one drawback for Origins. :yucky:

^ The way you put that makes it sound really pathetic
I have a deep voice in real life and I hate it.. I never really asked my girlfriend what she thinks of it because she knows I don't like it so she will just try to make me feel better...

My favorite voice ever out of anything is advlt Link's voice from The Legend of Zelda" Ocarina of Time.

I think Pete already stated that the voices in the build were merely placeholders.

Doesn't effect me anyways, all I'll hear is grunts and shouts. :P

Haha, it's just one of those things. :)

I couldn't multiquote you Vexxtech. Lol.

Anyway, I didn't know that so I ended up asking for those people's sakes. I went through a period of being very active on these forums, and then I just sort-of dropped off the face of the earth for like... months.
