Voiced protagonist?

Post » Wed Jun 03, 2015 9:18 pm

So much of the new trailer looks fantastic, but there's a voiced protagonist, and furthermore it sounded a lot like big-name actor Troy Baker, who doubtfully was in there for only one line. My fear is that we'll have to play as Troy Baker, possibly eliminating character creation? Is it just me or would this just be a tactic to sell the game to a broader audience? I'm not sure how I feel about this game overall. Bummer.

Mass effect did have character creation and voiced main character so i dont see reason why fo 4 could not have same thing. I could not imagine mass effect without player voice acting.

Also it could be just trailer thing. But i hope that main character really will have voice.

I'd expect there would be male and female voices for the main character if it is voiced, it doesn't really stop you from having a character creator.

Many people hated the switch to a voiced main character in the Dragon Age games but I think if its done well its add to the appeal of the game.

Am I the only one who thought of the old Shazam TV hero when he spoke and then we saw the lightning bolt?

NOT crazy about having a voiced PC. I don't mind grunts and whatnot, but really don't want a voiced PC. More immersion breaking that helpful IMO.

I'm hyped, and I'm guessing that if there is a voiced character in the game you will get different voices to choose from.

I seriously hope Bethesda doesn't waste their budget on big name Hollywood actors that aren't even good at voice work.

They might be in way too many games but Troy Baker, Nolan North, Laura Bailey, Steve Bloom, Jennifer Hale, Phil LaMarr and etc are actually talented voiced actors who know what they are doing.

I'm torn.

On one part I like the idea on the other hand I'm worried it could ruin immersion for some players myself included. I could bring up games like Mass Effect but the character isn't exactly 100% ours as they have a given name and then you have games like Saint's Row but at the same time saint's row doesn't take itself seriously at all.

Absolutely, Troy Baker is a fantastic actor, so if its him its not too bad.

Honestly though I don't mind too much. Fallout is different from TES, and in Fallout games you pretty much always played an "established" character with a set background etc (to an extent), but with personality and looks up to the players discretion (which I'm certain will be the case here as well). So a voiced Protag wouldn't be that biga deal really as it would have been in, say, Skyrim.

That's Troy Baker speaking at the end of that trailer, I'd bet dollars to doughnuts on it.

I was really hoping they wouldn't do Vault Dweller and for once let us do, oh you know, a ghoul PC for once. Seriously, I want the option to play a ghoul in the vanilla game.

I am not crazy about the idea of a voiced protagonist, but once in game it will only take me a few minutes to adjust.

YAY, voice protagonist. This will infect the next TES too.

Don't think the trailer is indicative of a VO for the PC. But who knows.
Was that Ron Perlman as the news anchor?

I don't think so. Didn't hear him at all actually.

Now if I could talk like Ron Perlman ... I might consider it.

Doubt they'd get Troy Baker just to do a trailer... I do think it's indicative that he's our guy.

Did you hear the war never changes?
It seemed like it was preceded by "our affiliates are coming to us now with"
but may have just been how it was edited.

I did hear the War never changes ... and it didn't sound like him. Not even close actually.

Maybe he could be an important character, but not ours. I'd personally prefer that.

Really? Well then his voice has changed, but that does happen when you get older. Maybe if we can hear the line without all the background noise it will sound better.

I'd be ok with this, a good voice actor might really liven up the dialogue. Also its pretty standard to have a voiced protagonist anymore, so i don't see why anyone would be upset about it

I just can't see it. I can imagine the cut scenes would show your characters face as he/she talks also ... just like BioWare games. Just ... no.

i actually like the sound of it myself. Dialogue and interaction would become much more of a priority if that were the case. Although that might take you out of gameplay too much...eh time will tell i guess.

Maybe there will be first person dialogue like in Dying Light. Still don't like it for Fallout, but it's better than cutscene dialog.
