A voiced Protagonist?

Post » Thu Nov 26, 2015 5:09 pm

^ Or Miss Piggy.

But seriously, some folks here are reading this WAY too deeply. For all we know, it was only just for the trailer and 111 is like all the other MCs: a blank slate that doesn't talk.

I'm not asking for a rigid character, just one with a personality so some actual archs can be written.

I think blank slates are great in TES, but both RPGs don't have to follow the same exact model. Of character development. It's not so bad for one of them to be story driven.

If he/she is voiced and there is more grey choices instead of bad karma and good karma, I think we could have an amazing narrative. Just one of these won't make a great plot, but putting all of them together could be amazing.

No full voice acting please. Its restricts the types of character i can play. And breaks my suspension of disbelief when i try to role-play my character that isn't inline with the voice actors portrayal. Put that development time and money into other areas of the game that could use it, and that is wanted by the fans, like better FNV survival mechanics / hardcoe mode.

Like I've said before I do not want a voiced character. When your character has a voice it takes away from building of that character, instead the character starts fitting the quirks of the voice actor. The character you are playing should be able to be anyone that got roped into this or was the destined one with ample freedom for you to be able to tell your own story within the world you living in.

I'm not entirely against voiced PCs but for Fallout and Elder Scrolls I am it just doesn't fit with the foundation the games were built on. If there is a voiced character will it be the end of the world? No, but I certainly would be disappointed and may end up leaving the series entirely depending on how it's handled or if they wise up and correct it in the next game.

I want my character to be my own I don't wanna go on youtube and hear the same VA no matter who's playing, makes the experience feel less personal. Though to be fair Fallout 3 was pushing this as well by giving you a dad and making your age 19 no matter what so I suppose cutting out player creativity altogether could be the next logical step for them in their mind.

I don't think they would have just done it for the trailer. I think the character will be voiced to some extent. I hope I'm wrong though. A fully voiced player character means that Bethesda would have had to have created a Shepard or a Geralt for the Fallout universe and I can't see them doing that, as it would go against what they've done in the past.

I really hope it's not about issuing commands to your dog.

Voted for the third option as it most closely resembled 'no thanks'; although I certainly don't consider voiced protagonists a plague on the entire industry.

Assuming it's true that the game will have a voiced protagonist, I just hope there is an option to turn it off. It's a bit of an immersion-breaker for me, as I usually like to give my characters my own voice. Of course I'd rather the "Let's go, pal" line was only used for dramatic effect in the trailer and is not actually an indication of a voiced PC in the game, but I'm not gonna build my hopes up as it seemed to be used in the context of the trailer as the game's big new reveal, plus there are apparently leaked documents regarding voice actors that evidence the whole voiced protagonist thing.

I just hope that if it's true, it doesn't also mean less dialogue options in the game. I would like to see more PC (and NPC) dialogue than 3 and NV, but the space used up by all the audio files for all lines of dialogue spoken by the PC (at least twice over for both genders and possibly more for different races or ages) would quite possibly limit that.

Really stupid poll options. Why does the third option have to be worded that way? I love voiced PC's in some games, just not open world RPG's.

They are a plague. I do not want a voiced protagonist in this game. Fewer dialogue options, fewer options in general, replayability adn roleplayability will suffer.

The idea and goal of a voiced protagonist is to appeal to a wider audience. The problem I have with this was that last time there was an appeal many skills and attributes were stripped from TES.

Now that Bethesda can utilize the new current gen hardware I have high hopes that Bethesda can still deliver in both aspects of quality and quantity.

I have a feeling that I won't like it, but then again, I felt that Dragon Age: Inquisitions implemented it fairly well, so perhaps Bethesda could too.

I'm impartial.

I agree for the most part, but the Dragon Age protagonist's tone sounded emotionless and apathetic at times.

Now that I think about it, Bethesda has a lot more competition now. Dragon Age, Witcher, and many other games boast large open worlds. I feel Fo4 will push the open world genre even further, or atleast I hope. With the current gen hardware I'm intrigued how Bethesda will push the envelope.

So far, I think the voice they gave the protagonist is far more unique in Fallout 4.

Based on the three words that we heard!

Poll is biased.

I would rather not have a voiced character, but I don't think voiced characters are bad overall. But if they want you to roleplay and they say "Hey you sound like this, deal with it!" then it kinda ruins it, because you might imagine a character with a different voice.

If you had tons of voices to choose from then that would be another thing, but I doubt Bethesda would do that. In fact I kinda doubt that the main character is voiced. Trailers don't mean anything nowadays, and rarely if ever perfectly reflect the final product.

Interesting tweet by Beth, today.

They are listening. Perhaps we can extrapolate something from this?

I would actually prefer if we didn't get to choose the voice of the protagonist. I just want a voice that is done well. Inflections, pitch, and tone should be done well in the delivery.

Seeing as Troy Baker is the man behind the voice I don't think we need to worry.

Well I'm not going to join twitter just to add a reply, but that was by far the worse part of the trailer for me. It said to me, dog companion, voiced PC and a blue jumpsuit that just needs a cape.

I don't think that really shows they are listening. I think it's just a way for them to drum up conversation and publicity for their game without having to reveal anything else.

It's not like it's asking "What are your concerns based on the trailer?" or something else that would convey that they're interested in criticism. In fact, we've already heard from one of the higher ups of Bethesda (and head of their PR), that he isn't going to spend time or energy caring about what people think.

Really?! You have to be kidding me. They have these forums with awesome ideas and nobody is even considering suggestions from them.

I'm all for developers sticking to THEIR vision, but this is just on another level.

No, they didn't.

He is blatantly misrepresenting what Pete Hines said in relation to several people complaining about the graphics.

As I suspected, they think we should be hyped about this, like that is when we should have started squeeing and clapping. I wonder though, I don't follow IGN or Kotaku or any of those places, is the voiced protagonist something most people are [censored] to outside these forums?

It totally depends how many voice options there are, whether it is toggable, etc. Obviously if it's just a male voice that's a pretty big downer (though it personally wouldn't affect me that much, unless it really limited dialogue.)

I've read an article on Forbes that gushes with excitement about "Let's go, pal," like the writer just met the most wonderful person in the world.

Yeah. And all the "finally, they join the modern world." As if silent protagonist/ first person protagonist is not a design choice with its own merit. I'm sick of that crap. Have to listen to it from Bioware developers, hopefully Beth doesn't succumb to the same thing.
