I don't mind having voiced protagonist I just wish the male voice didn't sound like every other male voiced protagonist ever.

I believe they said in the demo that you can stay in 1st person during dialogue.
For me this is disappointing but not really surprising, it was obvious from the trailer that we were going to get a voiced protagonist. Not much to add to what others have said in this thread already, a voiced protagonist severely limits roleplaying possibilities. The biggest problem is not even the voice, but the fact that you don't know what the PC will say until you click on a dialogue option.
Ehhh, it's kind of a good thing though. If his voice is the only one, it's a fairly neutral voice. Not too light, not too deep. It helps detract (most people) from his voice when focusing on character building.
We're going from tens of thousands of dialogue options total to just over ten thousand.
It's may be that way because it's voiced by the actor who voices every other male protagonist ever . I may be mistaken, but doesn't the male voice sound like Troy Baker?
The real question is: do the protagonists have Boston accents?!
Ah wanna be a wicked vault warriah!
"Tens of thousands" is far more "just over ten thousand".
It's the difference between 13,000 and 30,000.
Oh well. I'm sure Bethesda will handle dialogue just fine. I really enjoyed the demo's Mr. Handy exchange and it had only 4 options to pick, so I'm okay with all this since the dialogue exchange looks pretty quality.
Frankly, I prefer if a game has strong narrative. With a voiced protagonist, it's a lot easier for the devs to create that.
The problem I see though.... is that user-made content will seem quite jarring when the protagonist stops talking, or has a completely different voice.
But then again, with the protagonist being a 30-something male, it might not be too hard to find a sound-alike.
If they are going the paraphrase/ME route, muting the voice won't be possible; you will have no idea what the character actually said. You pick "I want to be a dragon." on the paraphrase list, and what the character says is "That trick looks very useful. Can you teach me?"
I think there would be an incredible amount of saving and reloading if you mute the character's voice.

Presumably there will be subtitles. Games have always limited what you could say, but voice acting limits the manner in which you say it as well. By turning off the audio and reading subtitles instead, at least you can use your own inner voice.
I hope you can do this. I also hope there are options to limit any non-dialogue pvssyr like you saw when you moused over the nuka-colas and the sugar bombs.
I voted yes as I like options. However, the thing that really bugs me is that us modders who build quests have a dilemma. We can get an actor to voice the player in our quests or leave him/her silent. I think either one breaks immersion for those who play with sound on. We'll have to see how it plays out and I'm remaining cautiously optimistic.
I like the idea of being able to hold two conversations at once. I bet quest-making modders will be able to do some pretty amazing stuff with that.
I wouldn't mind them being voiced so much if I actually knew what they were saying.
"Get food" doesn't tell you the line is going to be "uhh uhhh uhhh sure uhhh food yeah sure uhhh".
*sigh* Honestly I was hoping for, and would've preferred, Skyrim's dialogue style. I know the excuse for paraphrasing is "people don't want to read and then hear the same thing! It's boring and repetitive!"
But this is absolutely atrocious attempt at paraphasing. The best way to paraphrase would be to actually represent what is being SAID, rather than the INTEND of what it being said.
For example: "That what your contact told me. But I have reason to believe he's lying. Here: let me show you what I found." be paraphrased as "I think it's a lie, and I can prove it." instead of "Show proof" or something equally useless.
nah, that's just nerd toys, that's alright.
when they start an elder scrolls tv cartoon series, i'll be starting to worry
This is kind of off-topic, but out of curiosity, did anyone from Bethesda approach any of you folks in the modding community about their plans to make mods available on XBox One and (maybe) PS4? Or did this just get dropped on you guys like the recent paid mods fiasco?
last thing i want in my open world game is hearing my character speak with this arch typical white american ( christian) homeboy hero, it gets sickening and never will be the character i want to immerse or connect with
it is stupid and get so bloody annoying having all these cutscenes that it will break the game for many
Ok, having watched the E3 presentation over and over again and having time to sleep on it I can now say ... that I really hate the idea of a voiced PC.
I played 30+ different characters in FO3, NV, MW, OB, Skyrim, putting in over a thousand hours into each game, but I know I would have never done that if every character I had to listen to and every one had the exact same voice. There is just no way. The voiced PC kills the replay and role-playing for me. I'll still get the game, but since I know I'll only play through it once or twice it will be a GotY edition on sale type of purchase as opposed to a day one buy. Just don't feel like I'll get my monies worth out of it otherwise.
My only real hope at this point is that we have the option to do the dialog first person and that the PC's responses will be typed so we can read them. With that option my character can have the voice that I want them to have ... not the voice that Todd wants them to have. Sorry Todd but you really blew it on this choice. For all your talk of 'playing who you want to play' you did everything to take that away from me.
same here i hope it is optional but i fe&ar it will not be
but there is always hope in mods and since that is confirmed , mods
and i really want to know why they did this, surely they must have knew alot of people really dislike the idea
I'm sure that it will be possible to remove with mods, though personally I don't care either way, if anything, I feel that it adds to the immersion.
