After a couple long sessions of wilderness and oblivion gates, when I returned to town I noticed a problem I've never encountered before with vanilla NPC voices. Most of them work, but some randomly won't play - I see the subtitle, and their lips flap, but no sound plays, and the subtitle isn't there long enough to read (which is really strange, since I have the universal silent voice OBSE plugin, which works perfectly for mod NPCs with no voice mp3s). When the NPC is speaking multi-line dialogue, like in a quest (ie where they have multiple mp3s of stuff to say, as opposed to "Rumors" and the like), half will play, half will skip. Any time a particular line fails to play, it will continue to fail to play. However, if I quicksave-quit-reload and click the same line, it will play fine, but the same problem will happen with a different NPC, whose line I may have heard before the reload.
Very strange behaviour. I'm pretty smart, I use BAIN and TES4Edit and the CS and Google and whatnot, but I haven't been able to track down the cause or a solution.
I read about what sounds like a similar problem people with non-english installs have when installing english mods, so I uninstalled The Other Spheres - Prelude (english version, but it's a German mod iirc) which I hadn't started yet. Also got rid of ambient town sounds and all other sound mods other than AgarMoreVariedSpellEffects and OSSO, both of which I've been using forever. Even went back to a save before any of that was installed (with my load order, bashed patch, and all BAIN packages back exactly how they were), still I have skipped voices.
Let's see, what else have I tried... I have two sound devices in this machine, so I switched to the other one, tried turning "Hardware Acceleration" down on each of them as well. Changed to 24 sound card channels in Oblivion.ini from 32. Reboot many many times...
So, anyone have an idea what might be up? I'm going to try a bit of driver/directx reinstalling/maintenance next, then I guess BAIN packages of extraced voice .bsa files, or try and reproduce the problem on another machine (ugh, to both those last two), unless anyone's got another idea...
