Voices of Tamriel

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 5:38 am

Something to keep you lot occupied until the speculation thread is reopened. This would be the appropriate place to discuss how you imagine each race of Tamriel should sound. I'd have liked to have done a more in-depth questionnaire, but it seems you're only allowed a total of five questions.

I for one would love to see the return of the Scottish Nord. Without their booming brogues, Nords simply feel naked.

I also wish they'd make the Argonians and Khajiit distinct from each other -- why would a cat sound like a lizard?

EDIT: Fixed the redundant phrasing in the third question.

Morrowind's voices where perfect, imo. But, if there's Oblivion voice acting, there needs to be less voices. It takes too much space.

Oblivion only got Imperials and Redguard ok, imo. I want Dunmer to be the main focus. They where the most terrible out of everything.

I often hear this argument: "Every race in Cyrodiil looses it's acent because of Imperial Culture". Oh, so by your logic, every single race in the game should be stripped of all culture and uniqueness? No. Also, in this case, why did Imperials not sound like Dunmer in Morrowind? There, they knew that being unique and cultural was important for every race.

Dunmer need to be raspy again. Altmer need to sound more arrogant like in MW, the Imperials need to sound more Roman like Morrowind. Nords need to be more booming and not sound like Orcs. Bretons need their flamboyant voices back. Basically, the voices need to me much more unique, like you can easily match a voice to a race without seeing the NPC.

I know I'm nit-picking here, but Romans would definitely not speak with American accents. Or British ones. You know, come to think of it, why did Hollywood decide that every civilization pre-Colombus had British accents?

And to give this post relevance to the topic: boingo boingo whoopsy knickers.

I liked the bosmer voices in both games, I felt it really suited them. But in Morrowind, I felt they sounded a little too... harmless.

The Oblivion Argonian was was perfect IMO, though the Khajit should be changed.
And the Dunmer REALLY should be changed to its Morrowind style!

I prefer the Morrowind voices except Bosmer and Breton.
Bosmer weren't annoying and high-pitched in Oblivion, just annoying.
The male Breton voice in Oblivion was better, he didn't sound like an Imperial.

The Oblivion male Imperial voice was good, the female was the same as the female Breton. I don't like when multiple races have the same voice.

I couldn't decide between Nord/Dunmer on the last part.

EDIT: For the Nord/Dunmer part, I was talking about the female voice. Male Dunmer voice > every other voice in Morrowind (except Dagoth Ur)

The Breton similar to Imperial part was MW Breton to OB Imperial. It doesn't make sense the way I posted it, but I played Oblivion before Morrowind, and the the 5th NPC you meet in Morrowind (the one who asks for your information, I forgot his name) I thought was an Imperial between his voice was similar to Oblivion's Imperial voice.

I didn't say they spoke with American accents did I. They sounded "Roman" to me, more so than they did in Oblivion where they sounded even more run of the mill.

I liked the Morrowind Dunmer, they sounded raspy and it fit.

As for the Imperials I liked both Oblivion and Morrowind, they both sounded similar to me.

Redguard's were good in both.

Nord's needed to have more booming voices.

Bretons where better in Oblivion, they sounded annoying in Morrowind.

You know, it just occurred to me that I wood elf voices don't really fit the way they're portrayed in lore. Wood Elves aren't really supposed to be comical -- they're serious hunters who live in a tribal society, like a cross between Native Americans and ninja. I think the wood elf portrayal in general needs an overhaul

EDIT: Well, it seems there's a thread that beat me to the punch. I'll take my Bosmer views there then

The male Breton voice in Oblivion was better, he didn't sound like an Imperial.

Are you being serious? Imperials sounded like a race of diplomatic warriors, whereas Bretons sounded like magical scholars in Morrowind. They sounded compeltely different. The Bretons in Oblivion where awful. They sounded like complete idiots. Whenever I hear a Breton in Oblivion, I hear http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnoaj8b2bGM. And, of all of the races to give unique voices, they choose two races that are really similar? Why not give this voice change to one of the mer races? Imo, they are some of the most unique in everything they do.

I couldn't decide between Nord/Dunmer on the last part.

Again, what the hell? Dunmer where blatantly far better than anything in Oblivion, and Nords where pretty similar in both games, with Morrowind's having more emphasis on the accent.

You're entitled to your own opinion, of course, I was just stunned at what you said.

The Dunmer needs to get better.

Morrowind was pretty much perfect.

Oblivion could need some upgrades for Bretons, Nords and the Dunmer. The rest are acceptable.

Altmer? They sounded like the Bosmer. Altmer need to have "high and mighty" feel. They're supposed to be a race of highly magically adept nobles with a superiority complex. I never felt that in Oblivion. Even the poor NPC's, like Eldafire, in Morrowind had that feel.

Yes, yes, yes... Them too then... Also, I have never liked how Altmer picked so simple proffesions as Bartenders...

Silverhome On the Water, The Bloated Float... It just doesnt fit them... Or atleast they should be hobby-mages... Or atleast unhappy with their current job.

I really liked the Altmer voices in Morrowind, but in Oblivion all the elf people had the same voice. :yuck:

And not to forget the stylish raspy dunmer voices.

In Oblivion Nords and Orcs sounded the same, but IMO the orcs should have more base craggy edged voices.

That's when computer aided effects can help us. Make them more base and craggy via applications like sound forge.

Dunmer should have their old voices back it fit them perfect. I'd also like all races to have different accents too. For example Imperials should sound Italian, Bretons should sound french or something, and Nords should have some sort of slavic accent since their vikings. It doesn't really matter what kind of accent to me as long as it's not American or British I'd like every race to sound foreign to me since Tamriel is a different world.

I agree with this. I'd have to say, in all honesty, Oblivion's voice acting is good. Even the guy who did the elves was good. Only problem is I'm hearing it all the time. The game world wound up feeling like it was actually filled with clones for 4-5 people. Why I turned voices off. That and I was tired of the preschooler bandit pvssyr.

I liked several voices from each category, but my favorites are:

Morrowind-Dunmer

Oblivion-Imperials

Bethesda seems to make the native race of each setting sound coolest, in my opinion.

All the voices simply need to sound less like money leaving Bethesda's pocket for Patrick Stewart and Sean Bean...

To me, all of Morrowind's voices were perfect. Of course if Bethesda decides to make TES V into an "I Can Read Book" on audiocasette like Oblivion a fully-voiced game like Oblivion, I could see how some of these original voices could get awkward in full conversation. Especially the fragmented sentences used by the Khajiit and the male Breton's grating, squeaky French voice. Then again, Socucius Ergalla sounded alright.

There were actually a few voices I liked in Oblivion, such as the male Breton (much more harmonious sounding than Morrowind's IMO). I'd even go so far as to say that the male elf voice would fit the Bosmer perfectly. A good example is Thoronir, the shopkeeper in the Imperial City - I thought the actor reflected perfectly the Bosmer's mischievous, Cheshire Cat-like demeanor.

EDIT: I'm surprised that the male Oblivion Imperial voice has been so well-received around here. Whilst I do feel that their dialog had the strongest emotions and inflections about them, I can't say I like the voice. It sounds...demanding. I love the Morrowind Imperials just because of how neutral they sound. Even in combat. "Let's see what you're made of!"

And if anyone's wondering what a Dunmer would sound like fully voice acted: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORE9GSwRrN4&feature=related. Desmond from Point Lookout has the same voice actor. Sounds badass.

Exactly. All the ghouls in Fallout had amazing voice acting. I don't get why people think that it wouldn't work, when it's been done before.

Most of Morrowinds voices sounded great in my opinion, Oblivion not so much. Generally I think more of an emphasis on accents would help make races more distinct.
