VoIP is confusing me...

Post » Thu Nov 11, 2010 1:40 pm

So a few of you probably know me :P I was lurking for a while and recently started giving my part to the story that is the forums.

Anyway, after searching around for a while, reading all the interviews and stuff i am still confused with VoIP (Voice chat if you don't know what it is)

Now they say its only on for friends, but then they also say its off completely. And then they say you can turn VoIP on for all (except enemy obviously, that would be silly) but in other interviews they don't mention being able to turn it on or off when asked.

So definitively can anybody clear up VoIP? Are you able to turn it on/off? Is it friends only etc.

I'm hoping you can turn it on because as much as microphone griefing is annoying i like to be able to talk to people. And hey, if i get griefed there is a mute button right...

Working from hearsay on these forums, I'd say that VOIP is TOTALLY OFF when you first start, then unlocks after time.

And when it's available, it defaults to friends only - they haven't 100% confirmed anywhere I've heard, but by saying it "defaults" and not that it's fixed, they imply that setting can be changed.

The bit about VOIP being totally locked out at first, I don't remember reading outside the forums, though, so that MIGHT be a rumour. Unless someone can show up with a link?

Same way I made friends in Assassin's Creed before I figured out where my headset ran off to (I gave up on people when playing Resistance)...

Send a message via the console's messaging function. You'll have their Gamertag - just a quick "good game, well played" message can work wonders.

By taking a trip outside for some fresh air, I reckon. Try it sometime. :)

Anyway, still i'm too lazy to console messages after the games :P Rather just talk to people in game.

VOIP off = friends only.
VOIP on = all teammates.

From what I understand from consuming all there is Brink, VOIP is set to friends only by default. However, you do have the option to flicking it "on" so that you're open to communicating to everyone. There are a few articles that highlight this, which I can't unfortunately recall. There's been so many. Hopefully, another steadfast Brink fan can confirm this.

@obliviondoll: Agreed. I think the majority of gamers forget manners and that a little TLC goes a long way.

The way that SD is doing voice chatting is interesting. Having to unlock chat is a new idea but I'm hoping after some point the game will allow everyone at a certain level to chat. Even though there are people who believe their headsets are microphones to test if they should be the next American Idol (the horror I've sat through) it makes the game experience more enjoyable when it works. So it will be interesting to see and until I play with it I'll leave my judgment until I get a little game time.

Sounds like VOIP is off by default, you can turn it on or off.

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol.

Why would they label it on and off? It should be labeled friend and all.

Off would only mean your voice wouldn't travel over the line.
Example: Comcast Voice and Vonage. They ate VoIP services.

I think most of the people mean by off is "off for public/on for friends" They are just terming it as "off" cause its quicker and easier to understand :P

We actually don't know what they're labeled as in-game. It may very well be [Friend's Only] and [All].

I've been playing since VOIP meant voice over phone, dial-up modems and conference call

You can turn it off completely, hear nobody, or turn it on and pick who you want to communicate with. If you join a fireteam, it'll connect to everyone on that fireteam, fireteams can consist of 2 - 8 people
