Vram usage at 1920 x 1080 -EXTREME

Post » Fri Sep 18, 2009 4:55 am

I have 2 gtx480s in SLI with the installed EVGA sli enhancement profiles (including crysis 2). First, I will say that the game runs extremely well with these cards and I only notice a little flicker of the gun during nano vision. Also, the in-game 3D drivers work flawlessly without needing any additional third party drivers! That being said, I have a few questions.

1. With extreme settings and at resolution 1920x1080, I am only showing a MAXIMUM of around 67Omb of VRAM being used - average stays at around 571mb. This seems very low to me. What kind of VRAM usage are you people showing?

2. I have tried using the nvidia control panel to enhance and/or override the games graphics quality. Seems no matter what settings I change, be it Sli 64x AA, high quality texture filter, 8x/16x supersample, etc., none have any effect on frame rate and I still get fps from 60's-150's. I tried changing both the global and profile settings. Any ideas?

3.I know from the original crysis that there was a console command for system info to be displayed in top right corner. I believe the cvar was r_displayinfo 1. Is there a command for crysis 2 that will show this information?

**I would like constructive answers to help understand and possibly correct the issues. Please do not post in this thread if you are just going to rant or bich about crysis 2 not being this or that at release. Thanks

Isn't it up to nvidia to make their driver work with the game in reference to changing settings....I remember seeing in some changelogs before comments like now support AA in this game etc. Maybe once Nvidia releases a formal driver for the GTX 590 within the next few days it will also add Crysis 2 AA support and allow customization of the in game settings (which there are none as of now and hopefully they get patched in)

If Crysis 2 is anything like Crysis 1, it has the magical power to override some settings in the NV control panel (i.e. AA). As for GPU ram usage, that sounds about right.

Thanks for the quick replies!

Doomlord, did you check on your system the amount of VRAM you are using? Comparing it to crysis 1 at 1280mb made me think something is setup wrong for cry 2 on my end. I guess I will have to wait for new drivers and the next patch from crytek then retry everything.

In a nutshell, you've got more GPU than ya need for this game, currently anyhow. I have a single GTX480 (overclocked to 910MHz) on a 1920x1200 display, and the game never so much as stutters for me. The fact you're only using about a third of the card's VRAM is not surprising in the least to me.

Now come DX11, that might change. You'll at least see a bit more utilization of the memory. The 480 is a beast card though, I doubt Crysis 2 will challenge it too hard, especially when you have two of them, and assuming your CPU doesn't become your bottleneck. (SLI/Crossfire performance scales a bit on displays with resolutions similar to yours or mine if the CPU isn't fast enough to keep up with the two GPUs).
