[WIPz] Vurt's Bitter Coast Trees II

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 7:51 am

My second tree replacer for the Bitter Coast, yet again the trees i'm going for is the http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4092/5129507327_da7ca4e061.jpg (creds to vality for pointing me to the right direction). Hopefully a bit better this time.

I'll update this post with new images as i progress with the mod. You're welcome to give suggestions or constructive critisism :)

Great trees and atmosphere here!!

But in this pic => http://piclair.com/2vmj0
I think the trees have the too large trunks and high/taller trunks.

yes they're a bit too tall, height is usually what i fix last :)

On the to-do list is:

* fix height
* make the start of the trunks better / more detailed (can't do too much unfortunately, the trees are quite hi-poly already because of all the leaves)
* model new dead trees (4 of them)
* make new leaves (right now the trees has normal leaves, they should look more like pine needles)
* make color variations of the leaves
* new bark textures (probably)

Currently looking for images of dead trees, so If you find a cool / interesting image of one, post it here :)

at least skinny down the big tree trunks, they would never stand up in swampy ground. that's why cypress have a large base. we also have pines, live oaks, red oaks, water oaks, gum and pecan trees all over around here. tuesday is my next day off. i'll get you some tree pics and bark pics. and set up a gallery for ya. ok?

Really, REALLY digging this so far, Vurt. I especially like the thinner, twistier ones. The straight/thick ones stand out a little bit.

Do want! I've never been able to choose between you and Vality for this region - your trees look nicer in general, but Vality's were so thick and bayou-looking... like these, which also follow the convention of "nicer in general." Can't wait.

That were my thoughts too. So this was the only region im MW where I didn't choose Vurt's.
But all his recent reworks fit perfectly imo.

sweet, i just want to suggest, that it would be nice if the trees have +- same diameter as the original, because your bc trees 1 "eat" a lot of stuff around them :teehee:

Ratfink: that would be very helpful, especially if you can get some photos of bark and or even branches or leaves. And i'm sure you're right abot them being to thick.. those trees varies so much when i browse for photos of them, some look quite thick, some are very thin, some look like fir trees - very organized, others has completely crazy and chaotic shapes.

papill6n: Thanks! Lot's of good pics there. I've totally forgotten about deviantart for some reason, that's a really good place for references.

F.I.M.: yeah, i think i'll try to keep them similar to the original sizes. I can do 2 versions even, one with original size and a version with taller trees that will feel similar to valitys trees where you're more, hmm, encapsuled (if thats the right word).

I'm really loving how you are having different versions for the different regions, but I hate how hard it is to choose which one to pick! :P

Meh, the later versions are better, i might be biased though ;)

I'm trying to make the dead trees a bit special, this first one you can pass right through under, or use as shelter. Good or bad? (also, don't mind the leaves, they arent final)

I could lower it like this otherwise:

I'd say go for the second (lower) version. The first one looks alien and special, indeed, but the land foot-print would be probably huge and it will clip ungraciously with pretty much everything around it... However, I did like a lot the Unique Trees version you did for Grazelands (hint-hint)... :)

Cheers,
PKR.

It's not that much bigger, here are both trunks in Blender: http://piclair.com/data/atuyj.jpg

Might do a .esp for BC, but i'll probably make a pure replacer first i think.

Vurt, if you do a 'vality style ESP' type deal, just one thing I'd like to caution you about; Vality made the mistake of placing a bunch of trees in the way of the lighthouse so you can't do that fargoth quest correctly. Just thought I'd remind you about that quest so you don't make the same mistake.

I've been using your BC replacer with Vality's .esp for awhile now with some custom tweaks and it looks great. I had been planning on using your BCv2 replacer the same way but if you made your own .esp that would be even better!

I prefer the lower version - the other is nice, but it looks a bit... unstable. I'd keep it for the esp version.

I can make that tree flora_tree_bc_06, there's only 5 of those in the whole game, that way it's pretty unique and without an additional .esp.. the http://piclair.com/data/bg0w3.jpg is a pretty standard dead tree, looks like all the others. Sounds good?

Knots: yeah him and the falling wizard, whatever he's called again.. kinda funny when he gets stuck in a tree top instead of falling onto the ground hehe

Well, if there's only 5 of flora_tree_bc_06, then it's pretty much the perfect choice - the original looked anyway close enough, except for the roots part.

Will the trunks / bases of these trees match the originals? I'm just wondering if the various bungler's bane and what have you will still look right with this replacer.

I'm not sure yet. I'm thinking of maybe removing those, and hand placing them myself, the trees would look better. I don't know if such .esp would cause any incompability problems with other mods.

The original trunks are huge and can look quite bad on some trees.

Provided that you don't alter the landscaping at all, it should be compatible with Texture Fix. Beyond that, any competent modder could just go in and remove the trees that are sitting on top of any building in any mods they are using.

Knots; yeah i know, i still want to make the mod as compatible as possible though, not everyone knows how to use TESC to fix mods that are incompatible.. and modders themselves can sometimes be quite lazy with updates ;) + many mods are now old and doesnt recieve more updates - mostly these i'm thinking of.

OP is updated with new screens.

These are superb, you've caught the gloomy oppressive swamp feel perfectly.

I'm +1 with Knots about the lighthouse, though. If you do hand-place with an ESP, then for true "realism" there should be fewer trees on the coast side of the lighthouse too, otherwise it's not much use for ships at sea...
