Vurt's Lava Retexture

Post » Fri Jan 15, 2010 10:50 am

I've included 3 different versions + images of the dds files and in-game pictures for all versions so you can easily choose which one you think you'll like best, you can ofcourse mix/match the lava/crust combos to your liking.

PES link is coming once it's approved.

I personally like the smoke...if you could put up a pic of your new smoke, I might prefer that over the regular white smoke.

I like the textures in #1 ..... perfect ..... why does the lava flow remind me of a well-baked, crusted cheese pizza? ... mmmmm

Keep the smoke, the fire effect looks too unrealistic.

It looks bad in still pictures, looks quite realistic once its in motion, i'll include both i think.

My opinion is that you probably should choose between 2 particle effects:
- smoke raising slowly
or
- lava irrupting... fast.
The original smoke effect is not to so boring, but it is located on a very small part of the surface. On the opposite, lava could irrupt only on a very few and located places.

Looks nice!

If you'd like to support Mash's Installers feature, you could set up the directory structure in the archive something like this:
Vurt's Lava texture.txt
bright/textures
bright/textures/tx_lava_crust.dds
bright/textures/tx_lava_molten.dds
dark/textures
dark/textures/tx_lava_crust.dds
dark/textures/tx_lava_molten.dds
medium/textures
medium/textures/tx_lava_crust.dds
medium/textures/tx_lava_molten.dds
vurts_lava_bright.jpg
vurts_lava_dark.jpg
vurts_lava_medium.jpg

Then Mash would give the user the option to install the different sub-packages "bright", "medium", "dark". Of course, if they want to mix 'n match, they'd have to do that by hand.

Also, do you allow people to use your nice textures in their own mods? Thanks!

Mordicus: im just retexturing, there's not much i can do about animations/speed + this particular texture is also used for some Dwemer pipes, at first i was going to try to do lava bubbles but that wouldnt make much sense for the Dwemer pipes hehe

Moonsugar: Ok for the next version i'll make this structure then :) And yes people can use my textures for their own mods.

Cabron: Glad you like it!

A bit of constructive criticism :)
While new textures itself look very detailed and vibrant, the overall impression is flawed by their obvious repetitiveness. Vanilla ones look better from the distance.

Mint. I'll be picking this up once it's in Mash installer format.

Thanks for the constructive criticism, without it you never get better :)

I looked and took a few screenshots i agree with you, the vanilla textures does a great job with looking less repeating at a distance. The texture artist made sure that nothing stood out in the texture. I think their texture artist(s) are great, i can understand that people want better resolution etc but overall their textures are really good. You can learn a lot from studying their textures and try to understand why they made it in a certain color or pattern.

Kinda conflicted...The fire over the lava makes sense because it makes me assume a bubble burst and the "splash" came up. The smoke over lava looks more like a fart cloud.

But.

The smoke on the buildings look better as the building will never burn down. The fire over the buildings look silly and it wont ever burn the place down and triggers a "wtf?" reaction when i see this.

I guess if you cannot seperate them for each relavant placement. I'd settle for the better cloud of smoke over the fire =/
(Smoke over buildings and fire over the lava.)

yeah the fire from the dwemer pipes might look a little odd, but who knows what the mystical dwemers are doing ;) Fire from pipes shouldnt make the buildings burn down, the dwemers has better building materials than that! ;) the chimneys on the "standard" houses will have normal smoke though, there are several differnent smoke puffs in the game that are used for different things.

I'll provide both in the package so if someone wants it they can test it at least or just it as a resource etc.

http://clip2net.com/clip/m14405/1259981262-clip-212kb.png how does this one looks? I tweaked the color settings with the Smoke_green.nif, on the far left, on the far right was just a randomly chosen .nif

I'm also thinking of a way to make the fire repeative cycle random, so it pops out randomly and rapidly at other moments rather then a constant burning piece of fire. :3

PS, the glow maps on the lava crust is looking great!

http://clip2net.com/clip/m14405/1259982025-clip-67kb.png I managed to make it go on and off! ;D yaay now I need to make it slightly random if I could find out how.

o.O I'm going to make you a few meshes, I made one that poofs up like a lava cloud and then fades away! ;D
